Black Snake or Cottonmouth?

Thats one of the amazing examples of evolution. lots of non-venomous snakes(and alot of other creatures as well) have evolved to look like they're harmless counterparts in order to scare off potential predators.

The most common example is the scarlette king snake, that looks almost exactly like a coral snake. The way you can tell the difference is the saying "Red on yellow, kill a fellow. Red on black, won't hurt Jack", but most animals, including myself, are'nt going to stick around to figure out the correct sequence, they are just going to run.

anyway, that is my biology lesson for today kids.

That is only true in NC/the US btw... Go by that rule in other areas and you could die... lol

It is hard to have too much trouble medically from any snake in central NC's venom unless you have other medical issues... You can last a long time with a copperhead bite, and a cottonmouth bite is nastier but survivable... Sounds like he got done in faster from the multiple bites... glad he is okay!

A coworker got bit on the thumb by a copperhead while geocaching, but wasn't sure it was one... he drove home on a 35 minute ride, got on the computer and looked up snake bites and reactions, and then went to the hospital... I think it was several hours after the actual bite... Sure his thumb swelled up like hell and was turning black, but they saved it with minimal scarring... not even 100% sure he had to get anti-venom...

I was at work one time when a king cobra that was confiscated in the mountains was accidentally dropped on the floor of the room I was in... I think the closest anti-venom should it have bit someone in the room was probably Miami... hahaha

And I have a friend who nearly died from a copperhead bite ... barely made it to the hospital and it was touch-and-go for several days.

They have other medical problems? IE Blood pressure issues, etc.

Some people also just have different reactions to the venom... Not even everyone who gets bit has to get an anti-venom...

Kinda like Black Widows... You can get bit and survive without anti-venom...

Nope ... healthy as a horse. It may have been because the copperhead was a young one ... they say the venom is more potent in the younger ones.

I think the younger ones can't control their venom, which is why they are more dangerous..
