Smith, however, insists that he has embraced decertification as an enduring state of existence, much in the same way that Upshaw did in the early ’90s before – at the NFL’s insistence – he agreed to re-form the union. In an interview with Y! Sports earlier this month, Smith revealed that he envisions navigating the NFLPA through a union-free future, even after a possible settlement of the Brady et al antitrust lawsuit and a new contractual agreement between players and owners.

“I’ve come full circle,” Smith said as he sat in a downtown Bethesda plaza, a few miles from the NFLPA’s Washington D.C. headquarters, on a sunny spring morning. “When I went into this, my attitude was that the only way you have power is collectively, and I believed in unions as vehicles for employees asserting their rights. But looking back on what Gene experienced and understanding this particular situation, I’ve now come to appreciate the value of decertification in our particular circumstance. And I don’t see why we’d want to go back to being a union.”

If he sticks with this philosophy, the NFL landscape could really change forever.

Owners can't keep rolling over to the players. Tagliabue let the owners roll over and take it up the rear last negotiations just to save his face and allow football to go on while he stepped down as commish and let someone else be the face of the dispute the next time around. He was too scared to be the figurehead of a lockout. Now Goodell is trying to correct what should have been negotiated the last time around.

If the players get their way, both sides make their billions next year and possibly the following, but at the rate player's salaries are increasing... it won't continue to be as profitable for the owners while players keep raking it in.

Players are the ones putting the sport in jeopary... IMO

Without the PLAYERS there is NO sport. You can't make the arugment that they can pick up any guys off the street that will play for 50 grand a year, because they will want more and more just like current players. This is the owners fault.

Players come and go, but the owners and their marketing has made the NFL what it is today...

The greed is showing in the top tier players in this...at the cost of the game.

Antitrust...heck they can go play arena leagues, ufl, or whatever....fug the players...there are other avenues to play football...just like us, you don't like where you work find another job...the owners offer looks pretty fugging good (from what has been released).

Find it funny the players haven't seen it...greedy top tier players dbag smith and their own agenda...

The fact is that people will watch whoever puts the uniform on. They may complain that it is not as good, but they'll still watch.

The real truth here is that the league and players have a symbiotic relationship. Owners need players to be the product the fans purchase, while the players need the owners to finance their ability to play a game for a living. But the biggest difference is that players can be replaced, while super rich men willing to put a huge amount of their own personal wealth on the line for a game are much more difficult to come by.
