Monday's camp observations: QB Chad Henne gets booedFans inside Sun Life stadium started a "We Want Orton" chant

Camp observations

Chad Henne had a lackluster showing during Monday night's scrimmage at Sun Life Stadium, and many of the 10,109 fans in attendance let him know it.

Henne was booed a couple of times following poor throws. But after rookie OLB Jonathan Freeny deflected a pass intended for an open Anthony Fasano the fans booed louder, then chanted "We Want [Kyle] Orton," referring to the Denver quarterback the Dolphins tried to trade for. ...

Matt Kopa started at left tackle, and D.J. Jones started at right tackle. …

WR Julius Pruitt caught a 25-yard pass from Tom Brandstater, cut it inside, shook the safety and sprinted another 40 yards into the end zone.

Yeremiah Bell intercepted a Henne pass, which Fasano actually caught but bobbled in the air before hitting the ground. …

Rookie WR Clyde Gates and Phillip Livas and TB Nic Grigsby fielded the Dolphins' kickoffs. Gates and Livas showed off their sub 4.4 speed regularly.

Who's up?

Nose tackle Paul Soliai, who was slapped with the franchise tag this offseason, has been unblockable the first week of camp. In the first play of the inside run drill Soliai penetrated the line of scrimmage and blasted rookie tailback Daniel Thomas with a tackle for loss.

Who's down?

A day after impressing many with a strong performance, rookie QB Pat Devlin struggled mightily during the early scrimmage portion of Monday night's practice. Devlin was sacked three straight times, and on the final sackJared Odrick stripped the ball from his hand, forcing a fumble. However, in the second phase of the scrimmage Devlin completed a long pass to Brian Hartline.

Injury report

OT Jake Long, who is nursing a left knee issue, sat out his fourth straight practice.

jimmy did show a little something for you guys last season. Im not a diehard fan of your organization, but all successful NFL QB's have sucked their first year, and by year two or three, they explode. Jimmy had the same thing at Notre Dame, look at his year two to year three stats, mindblowing.

All I am saying is, dont rule out pickles (as you call him) just yet....

Clausen didn't have a good coaching team around him, and his receivers for some parts were unproven young rookies while Smithy was out because of his injury. Also he had no TE's. Newton will have a better chance then Clausen did, and I do think that he could make a good back up.

I would seriously laugh if Clausen beats Newton out for the starter position this year, or even next year, because of all the Clausen haters I saw on here. :3 But yes, it isn't as Clausen doesn't have some talent, I will be watching him during the preseason.

Ass-holes are everywhere.

Look, I just summed up that whole article with a 3 word sentence.

It does not excuse Panther fans for booing Jimmy. People with unreal expectations of QB's since Rapelethsberger posted a bunch of shitty seasons that resulted in SB's and Matt Ryan completed his first pass for a TD.

Clausen sucks. Clausen may always suck or he may turn into something worth a damn. If you threw Aarron Rodgers into the GB line-up as a rookie you very well could have ended up with Alex Smith 2.0.

holy poo I didn't even know Jimmy had 3 minutes worth of highlights from last season to put in a video.

you have to have seen him play to understand our frustration. that does not make booing him acceptable to me, especially right now. but he was beyond bad. 3 minutes of highlights just doesn't show you how bad he was. and no, it wasn't all his fault, but some of it has to fall on his shoulders - along with the rest of the offense and the coaches as well.

edit: lol :( I think that video had every one of his completions all year long that were past the line of scrimmage. poor guy.

I come to a conclusion that there were two Jimmy Clausen's last season: Clawful and Clawesome. He had some good drives were he showed good poise in the pocket and accuracy, although the drive never finished with a score, but he showed something that intrigued you. And then there was Clawful, not drives were bad, but games, just terrible. Receivers werent getting seperation that he needed, and he was sacked ALOT! And that can have an effect on a rookie. Remember David Carr? I hope he uses this booing from panthers faithful and competition from arguable a lesser talented QB, not Athlete, but QB as fuel to win the job and the fans over.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

I would say Clausaverage personally, but for a rookie I guess average is "Clawesome" to some. He did have some good drives but I would have liked to have seen one complete game from him.

Yeah, he never really had that one great game, that made us say "Wow, now that's our QB of the future." I guess because of that, you guys took Newton. Believe it or not Week 15 vs Arizona was his best game, and it was just an average performance.

Do you think that Clausen will do better with the current coaching staff, compared to last year? He wasn't even suppose to start last year if I remember correctly, although it was the Panthers fault for relying on Moore (having one good season) and two rookies. :\

Why so Clausen hate? Honestly with the right coaching I'm sure he will do much better, let's all wait and see how he does in the preseason competing for the starting job (I'd think Rivera would give him a chance), anyways last year when I thought Clausen did good during the preseason. The problem came when the Panthers realized Moore wasn't as good as they thought and switched starters, which I don't think Clausen was prepared for.

    • Two things: 1. Dr. Eric Eager is central to the draft process 2. I know that it was edited, but we didn't hear "Thieneman" one time, not even before the Vikings pick.
    • Why would he sign here as a guard when surely someone would sign him as a tackle?  Assuming he is healthy
    • Went back to watching the highlights. With a sober mind haha. Here is what I saw.    freddie needs to make 1 of those but the rest aren’t on him.    Slavin was BBBBAAAD again last night. Not sure what is going on with these game one Slavin gafs.    miller was ok but had his worst game in the playoffs so far.    nikishin was no good. His his awful turnover led to the first goal at the end of the first period that just can’t happen. ghost was beat like a drum multiple times last night, including the go-ahead goal at the end jarivs wont shoot. He is either hurt or he is struggling mentally and I think it could be a combination of both. He passed up a wide open net on the power-play only to pass it to no one and cleared it himself.     Svech played well. He is getting zero help on that line.    aho. Worst game as a pro. I mean that. He won’t shoot it, passes go to no one and turns it over repeatedly.  He did exactly what they did against Montreal game one when Miller had a turnover. Aho left his man to go help and left the golden Knight player wide open in front of Freddie.  If I was Rod, you Tell Aho when that thing hits your stick you fire it  someone needs to sit him down just him in a room and ask what’s going on. He seems soft, timid and has zero fire.   canes could have won that game   There isn’t a gap between these two teams  they are dead even   Carter Hart’s gonna get lit up in this series. We can beat that guy. the consensus last night was our defense played horrible and our stars won’t score.  clean the defense up. Tell the top line to shoot it everything and we’ll win tomorrow night.   Possibly convincingly.
