The Herd on Cam Newton today

If by no win situation you mean drafted onto a team he didn't fit.......then yes, it was a no win situation.

All of the coaches, analysts, etc, were raving during the Draft about how perfectly Clausen fit into the Davidson system, which was learned from Charlie Weis.

I'm not saying I'm all for Jimmy starting, just pointing out a fact.

doesn't sound like he said anything far fetched or over dramatic.. Cam has a long ways to go and I wouldn't be opposed to watch him on the bench at least the 1st half of the year..

if he starts, awesome.. I'm looking forward to Thursday's game..

I wouldnt be opposed to watching Cam learn to play in the NFL and watching JC sit on the bench...

More first downs and zero points...when getting first downs wins games vs points on the board let me know.

To be honest, I find it hard to believe he has more first downs than Clausen...let me google that

Edit 1: I don't know about "drive" attempts but I can tell you that Cam has more passing attempts thus far to be considered the "running QB" seems kinda odd that he would have more passes with less drive attempts.

Anyway; passing attempts after 2 preseason games

Jimmy = 22

Cam = 33

Still looking into the other claim you made

Edit 2: Passer ratings for each after 2 games

Jimmy = 81

Cam = 65

Edit 3: First downs

Jimmy = 9

Cam = 7

Cam has had more plays during the first 2 preseason games

Edit 4: I did not count the TD pass to Olsen as a first down

Preseason stats are not that important. Line ups are constantly changing. Different personnel. Different groups. Back ups. More importantly the preseason is for development. Theres a bigger picture. After watching all of last season and watching Jimmy play..and after watching Cam in 2 games so far...Cam has wayyyyyy more talent. Its not even close. Honest opinion

You know what? You join the crowd with last years group that said...and I quote "its just preseason, it doesn't matter" when the offense couldn't move the ball or score any points. I'll give you three guesses as to what is happening with Cam at the helm right now

BTW, check back in one min while I finish putting two more stats together to post such as total points the team has scored while each QB was in and the all important yards per attempt...since Jimmy is the check down king

How exactly do you know Cam has wayyyyyyy more talent? Because you hope he does?

What everybody needs to do is FORGET about what he did last season. This is a brand new offense, new and improved weapons. Both quarterbacks are basically rookies in this new era, with the exception that Clausen has played in a lame duck situation and took his beatings.

Fox needed an option if Moore didn't pan out.....and was hot or cold. Games like the SF game Moore had showed you could win with decent QB. Hell, the NO game that Clausen played showed if you weren't god awful you could compete w/ this team......Clausen did nothing that game and was in position to win on the final drive.

All in all, Clausen played just like he did at ND. He didn't fit and that wasn't his fault nor was it Fox's fault. Both really got screwed.

Good point. Clausen just played like he was taught to. Can't blame him there, but he looks so much better in this new system, so it's hard to say he still doesn't fit in here. Yes Cam was the coaches pick, but Clausen is still on board.

I just remembered one of the stats that Colin Cowherd mentioned about Cam that really bothered me is that he has yet to convert a 3rd down.

Cowherd has a thing for hyperbole and sometimes blatent misstatements of fact in driving home his "points", that's his bit. I don't think you're supposed to take it literally when he does that, and certainly don't let it get to you.

1-Not sure why you're a stat rat. Its preseason. The games do not count. They are practice games. Its for the staff to evaluate what their team is capable of. If you have ever played at a high level of competition in athletics you would know this.

2-You are lying to yourself if you say "Jimmy gives us more a chance than Cam". Just by watching the way Cam moves around...stays relaxed under pressure and has ability to escape it...arm action..arm stength...He will make passes Jimmy could never make just due to pure athleticism. He had some impressive throws in the first game. And drops. He is a presence on the field...defenses will have to shift their gameplan towards him (QB spy??)...thus making guys like Olsen. Williams. Smith...even better..Jimmy just isnt a starter in the NFL. A back up possibly...will not be a championship caliber starter.

3-Just because Cam hasnt been able to break big runs...in what 3 or 4 quarters that he's played...doesnt mean he wont have them during the year. Hes hardly had any playing time under the lights...

4-Dont make the point of last year. The organization dumped talented players and clearly packed it in to save money. This team is totally different with a much more aggressive coaching staff. The points WILL come from Cam

    • I had started typing my post hours ago and didn’t finish it and just came back to finish it, posted it, then saw yours and saw we were pretty much saying the same thing - even the games that stick out to us most.  I don’t think a lot of people remember that SF playoff game, but I felt like I had just got mugged in broad daylight.  I remember them calling Mitchell for unnecessary roughness, and then I remember watching Boldin take a super late cheap shot, dead in front of the ref and then showing him watching the whole thing in replay…  the refs let them have a fuging field day and didn’t do jack poo, but if we so much as breathed the wrong way it was fuging 15 yards.  Each team playing under two completely different sets of rules.  poo hurt.  I was enraged.  I’ve never went back to watch either that game or SB50 and never will.  fuging robbery.
    • I’ve said it a million times since, but it’s impossible to keep them from affecting the game.  In SB50, they literally took the game from us, and they did it early.  Cotchery’s no-catch?  The miraculous amount of times we converted for a first down only to have it suddenly called back make it a 3rd down and 15+ against the best defense in the league that specialized in rushing the passer and man coverage on the back end?  And you do that enough times, you kill the morale and confidence of the team you’re doing it against.  It’s telling the one team “you can do whatever with impunity” and the other “you can’t do whatever they’re allowed to do.”  It changes the aggression level.  It essentially neuters one team and allows the other to do whatever the fug they want.  Imagine you call the police for help and they get there and tell you to sit still while the other party beats the poo out of you and you can’t defend yourself.  That’s what the officials do.  There is no way to avoid them affecting the game.  And more often than not, it’s the most subjective calls they use to do so.  Even in SB50…  you saw the Broncos commit more egregious penalties than anything we did, and barely any of it was called.  Their OL was holding all fuging game and the refs did nothing.  We already had our work cut out for us against two future HOF edge rushers and the refs played to their advantage with that.  From what I remember, both Oher and Remmers were called for holding at various times and their hands were in the INSIDE of the defender.  It was garbage, but all by design. Also, if there is any video of it anywhere, go look at what the refs did against us back in 2013 against SF.  The fix was in there too.  They stepped in early and often and ensured we knew we were not allowed to play with the same aggression or intensity SF was.  It was disgusting as well. at this point, I hope Vince McMahon, errr, I mean Goodell just finally scripts us to win it, because this poo is not won via competition or off merit.
    • You can go back to the New York Knicks somehow getting Patrick Ewing.  I saw a story where they place the New York Knick card in the freezer right before the drawing.  It was simple.  Show everyone the cards are undetectable to the human eye.  All they had to do was grab the coldest card. IMO ever since Goodell took over the NFL it has been fishy.  Patriots winning the SB after 9/11, New Orleans after Katrina and Peyton Manning's going away gift against us. The terrible calls during that game were blatantly one sided.  New England should have been stripped of their first 3 SB when they were caught spying on the other team in their SB wins.  I think the evidence against the Patriots was so damning Goodell felt it could ruin football and they brushed it under the table.   In the 2004 SB, How did we go from practically no yards in the first Quarter to setting a record in the 3rd Qtr.  Dan Henning changes the game plan.  IMO probably the greatest half time adjustment of all time.
