I thought he knew 90% of the playbook before camp opened???

Seriously, when guys on the left run clear routes and Smitty is underneath in the area they just cleared, it's not a hard play to "memorize."

If he can't memorize all of these "vanilla" plays, what happens when we install our real playbook?

Stop making excuses. He ran when he didn't need to, which was a worry about him, hopefully it gets better.

That's what a pocket in the NFL looks like. Looks pretty damn good to me...

he ran right as that pocket was established after 2 gaping holes opened up for him to run with 3 guys making a B Line right at him.. if he trusted his pocket, he could have sat there and hit Smitty. the last few weeks haven't afforded him much trust, it works both ways.

I'll be right here trying to temper expectations, and more likely the case: keep people from jumping from rooftops..

in that exact situation, there's not much for me to complain about. if the situation changes just a bit and the pocket was established while trusting the line and Smitty goes unseen, then I'll point out Cam should have made the throw.

I fully expect a lot of bad things happening this year.. we have a rookie QB and a rookie coaching staff, young team and some gaping holes at certain positions..

this year is going to be full of fug ups.. if the worst that happens is Cam running for 20 in that particular situation, then so be it. ;)

I just don't like him taking off when he doesn't need to. That to me shows regression. It worked out this time but it's not something that is sustainable for success.

If Mike Vick only took off when he "needed" to......Mike Vick would probably not still be playing in the league today.

If Cam Newton only runs when he has no other option.....he will never reach his potential in Carolina. He has potential to be great.

I'd rather him hit Smitty, and in a different circumstance I'd agree with you.. From what little I've seen, I think he's tried to be primarily a pocket passer. I find it hard to believe he knows 90% of the playbook, so I donno what Weinke was trying to say.. maybe JR paid him to hype up the fans.

I agree that if Cam knew 90%, he would anticipate Smitty being open there. I also think that is something that takes time and we both agree Cam isn't there with a total understanding and memorization of every nook and cranny..

but that pocket wasn't set (or was set exactly at the moment he ran), OLine hasn't proven he should trust it and would have yet again proven that if Stew wasn't there, so if he runs and gets 20 yards, I'm good with that..

just my point of view.. but I think it's pretty accurate to that particular situation though.

Cam is also a rookie.. and despite all the misinformation floating around, he still has a lot to learn (i.e. how to pick up the blitz)

Vick is touted by people all around as being a top QB (for some reason, this year will prove different I believe) and yet his tenure in the league still has his biggest weakness being picking up the blitz..

Vick is probly a bad example, but I'll let Cam learn how to play QB here before I worry if he ever will.. if down the road he never learns, then that's a problem.

right now it's just ignorance, later down the road it could be stupidity.. we haven't seen enough to judge that yet.

Vick played over 80 games in the NFL before he got the chance to start for Philly last year.....he started a handful of games for Philly last year. A handful of his MOST RECENT games are NOT why he has played so much football in the NFL.
