This is the kind of crap from writers that infuriates me

If Auburn quarterback Cam Newton did not have enough critics, then his recent comments to Sports Illustrated writer Peter King promises to deliver more.

During a recent phone interview, Cam Newton told King that he sees himself as more than a mere, mortal football player.

Newton: “I see myself not only as a football player, but an entertainer and icon.”

Actually, Peter King admitted that he intentionally spun what Cam said to be more than what it was meant to be.

Amazing how some folks can say stuff and no one thinks much of it and others say innoncent quotes that turn into a fire storm...Gee I wonder why?

Funny how those who don't know the kid nor did any research on him, are the ones quick to jump on any and everything these "entertainers" and wannabe "icons" in our media have to say.

Cam use to mentor as an Elementary school for weeks during the football season while he was at Auburn..Funny, that Principle didn't even know who he was. So I guess he really wasn't that much of a "celebrity." Except in the eyes of the media.

context didn't change my opinion of the quote - I didn't like it at all.

That being said, I didn't expect that King would be too stubborn to admit that he probably should have at least provided some context. I think he is right that the quote, regardless of context, is not so good. I also think he's right that the rest of the media would have ran with just that quote, regardless of what else was said, considering what was going on at that time.

I got that it was a phone interview, and so I expected the question related somehow to how he saw himself outside of football. So context didn't change it much. I suppose if there were people out there that thought he called up Peter King to announce that he was more than just a football player or some stupid poo, context would have helped them quite a bit.

Ultimately though I'm glad the Panthers didn't care much about that quote, cause he certainly seems like the right pick now :)

After seeing what a silly quote was turned into, I'm now left to accept the fact that our media can put a innocent man in jail by nothing more than creating a fire-storm around him. Sad

You tell me then.

Innocent folks are being put to death without their due process and we're in a recession and all u can do is sit and turn some silly out of context quote into attention unto urself and Cam is the one with the ego issues.

FYI, Cam didn't send out the twit..Peter King did. And right below that twitter, he also twitted that Cam was a very nice kid and looked forward to meeting him at the Combine...Sounds to me like a grown man just saw an opportunity to instigate an already brewing fire-storm against this "nice" kid.

buncha crap
you're turning into a troll. consider that a "can't handle the truth" comment if you want since your ego craves that kind of thing so badly. reality has no bearing on discussions with you.

i won't be responding to comments you make after this.

I think you're just getting your panties in a bunch and now you're labeling a troll when you don't get it was a post made to be a joke. But you're also not getting the fact that Cam is not going to be a humble and modest QB. He won't and there will be plenty of other comments from him along these lines. I this bothers you this much, when his critics give him hell for what he says, you're going to continue being bothered throughout the entire season, because I am certain Cam's going to continue to give them ammunition.

Some of you misunderstood me in the same way with Clausen last year so yeah, I'm not surprised. I'm also not surprised how it turned out. Remember last year when I was getting labeled a troll, when people just didn't want to see reality, that long after his biggest of defenders turned against him that I'd end up still having more support for him?

This is kind of like that. And I do, as far as Clausen goes and hope he continues to improve.

Who gives a fug...... a year ago (plus every single year before that) people bitched about no one talking about our team or players on the national level. Now they do and people= BITCH...

Pick a side and stay on it.

Everything he does will be scrutinized, so what, be glad that people care. Maybe it will help him stay on his toes.

I give a fug when someones says I'm a troll but in reality I am one of the guy's biggest supporters....maybe not as some fans want him to be seen....but as he really is.

It's easy to fall in love with a perfect image, but if it's not reality, it's just superficial love. But real love and real support is when you can see the the bad with the good and love the person all the same.

Anyway, time to watch the pre-game show. It's cat fight time!

About the only things I saw with Cam at Auburn that was kind of "Hollywood celebrity-like" was when he would win a big game and he would smile and jump up into the student section and yell and celebrate.

NFL players do that all the time. They love to make a big TD, jump up in the stands and give the football to a teenage kid or something.
