Godfrey vs TEs

I give Godfrey props, he has improved immensely since his rookie year and has become a SAFETY. He seems to have gotten more physical each year and I have been proud of a lot of the plays he has made this year in pursuit and tackling, but man... this guy is getting torched by TEs in coverage.

It seems he has become a target of opposing offenses as this has been two weeks in a row that they have put their bigger, slower TEs on him and had him for dinner. I hope they come up with a solution to this during the bye, either getting him help or working on technique because it is killing us on 3rd downs and it shouldn't be.

He was the only one who had even a sliver of success guarding Graham. There are a reason the Tony Gonzales, Gates, Emerging tight end Graham are having success in the league. They are hard to guard. They are too big for smaller players, and too fast for bigger players.

Yeah, but Gonzalez isn't exactly a burner anymore, neither is Shiancoe. You'd figure Anderson would do a better job sticking with them because of his size/speed. Godfrey's advantage is speed and Gonzalez and Shiancoe never flinched, they made a move, created spearation and Godfrey never caught back up until they had already caught it.

The Panthers were in cover 4 a lot of the day it looked like and Godfrey probably had responsibility for Adrian Peterson as well when he was still in the backfield.

That's why when Peterson would run Godfrey would be there almost immediately, but when he'd leak out past the pocket, there'd be a linebacker slow in taking him. In that play, Godfrey is guarding two people. Once it's not a run, it becomes the linebackers responsibility to guard his zone, which the Vikings were exploiting mercilessly because dan Connor is the slowest motherfuger I've ever seen.

Anyway, I don't specifically remember Godfrey getting beat by tight ends, but if he was, I'd be willing to be it was on play action when he was shadowing peterson.

I do specifically remember RJ Stanford getting beat by every single person he guarded.

I know you don't know a lot about football so this is really hard for you but Shiancoe is actually a really freaking good tight end. You're making it sound like Jangler went out there lined up on the line and scored.

That was uncalled for Fiz.

Shiancoe is good, but he shouldn't be able to out-agile/out-quick Godfrey. That's the only real advantage Godfrey has over him, if he's matched up with him, it should work to our advantage and he shouldn't get separation that easy.

Our TE's exploit the middle of the field: WOW OLSEN IS SO GOOD!

Their TE's exploit the middle of the field: I'm really worried about our safeties.

BTW this reminds me how everyone would blame Godfrey for getting beat by WR's last year. Somehow this problem magically went away when Marshall headed to AZ.

Now, when we're on like our 19th LB, suddenly Godfrey sucks at covering TE's.

Hmmmmm....

Im going to have to agree with Fiz in that I dont think Shiancoe was Godfreys man. I think it was a zone cover and Connor sucks in pass coverage. Every catch was in the middle of the defense with the LB trailing.

Godfrey also had a bead on AP all day.

I'm pretty sure if you posted the actual play it didn't break down in any way, shape or form like you think it did.

I don't have it recorded, but I wouldn't find it an issue if it didn't happen.

We may have been in cover 4 quite a bit like you were saying, but I know historically, our scheme lends itself to a lot of man matchups because of the pressure we send... Which it appeared we were still doing quite a bit yesterday to help against the run.

So, taking that into consideration, I assumed Godfrey was purposely matched up against Shiancoe. It happened more than once and they showed replays of several of them b/c they were 3rd down conversions.

One had Godfrey on him at the LOS (or at least he ran up and met him there at the snap), Shiancoe took a quick instep and just ran back across the LOS towards the sideline... Godfrey played the outside and once Shiancoe cut in, he never got back in front of him and they got an easy conversion.

Obviously Gonzalez didn't become one of the greatest TEs ever by being a bum, but again, if we're purposely matching Godfrey up in man on the TEs, I could understand him getting outmuscled or boxed out for passes, but not beaten off the snap and allowing them to run 8 yards or so without catching back up.

I just do not fuging understand b listers obsession with tossing Godfrey under the bus.

They're like little flies and poo posting about Godfrey is a bright light just...over..the horizon

I wish you guys would chill out. Where did I attack Godfrey in my post? I said he has improved and I've loved his play in run support especially this year. He has gotten a lot better in making plays on the ball and showing range as well since his rookie season - a lot better. And I know and agree, that Marshall was the problem with the WRs last year.

I'm not throwing Godfrey under the bus. Delhommey, you've been a Godfrey fan since day one, but seriously, I was addressing an issue I noticed from the last two games... Where did I say Godfrey sucks? Godfrey stinks? We suck at safety?

I didn't. But, have fun with groupthink.

And that's some bullsh*t Fiz. If you want to show me I'm wrong with actual plays, great, then my issue is non-existent. Instead, you decide it wasn't what you saw so let's turn the thread into flame fest.

He doesn't think like us, rawr!!1!

Again, I've loved Godfrey's play for the most part and I could be mistaken, but this is the only issue I've noticed over the last two weeks. I've seen repeated replays where he seemed to have the TE from the snap, which suggests we are in man, which also isn't beyond belief considering our scheme because we like to send pressure...

But, let these self-proclaimed football experts tell it.

It's possible that we were in zone and our less than stellar backup LB corps (outside of Anderson) passed the TE off on Godfrey too early, but again, I've seen several replays where Godfrey is running with the TE from the snap.

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
