Cam Newton speaks in Roll Tide/War Eagle Documentary (Clip inside)

It was a huge story at the time. What did you expect ESPN to do?

Besides, earlier in the thread you seemed to have a big problem with this documentary, now you claim that your problem is with how ESPN handled the scandal while it was happening. Do you still have a problem with the documentary, and if so why?

I've seen a lot of coverage on it so far. Will it be as "big" as the Auburn scandal? Who knows, the sports related consequences aren't as high, Penn State isn't undefeated playing for a championship, or have a heisman candidate, or playing a potentially inelligable player. ESPN didn't make as big of a deal about UNC's football scandal as they did about Auburns and Ohio

State's even though UNC's was probably worse, and that's because UNC isn't as relevant.[/quote

Actually my pet- peeve has always been with how our sports media, not only like to sensationalize the news but make way to much out of unimportant news while threading lightly on scandals that can hurt a coach or school who are held in high regard to them.

And if u paid attention to the some of the schools that got in NCAA trouble earlier this year but not much was made of it, they weren't all lower ranked school.

Also as I said, I didn't watch the ESPN show but kept seeing the preview. I am "Bama/Auburn feuding" out. So, I had no plans on watching it

I way more interested in Penn State than some over-sensationalized he said story.

Fact: Cecil Newton admitted he shopped his son. I don't care what you think of Cam, Auburn, the NCAA or anything else, that's not sensationalized. I support Cam just as much as any Panther fan but for you to call a story sensationalized when his father admitted to shopping him is pretty ignorant.....

Don't worry about footballisasport....he hates the media or something and he tries to find controversy in everything. It was an excellent piece' date=' which is what I've come to expect from the 30 for 30 documentaries....[/quote']

I actually don't "hate" the media. Just don't care for the direction in which they are going. I know sensationalism sells but if I thought those who make a living wanting us to take them serious would stay away from "reality tv" style news reporting. :)

I am convinced that there were rules broken in the recruitment of Cam Newton and that Cam Newton knew every aspect of it.

Now that he's a Panther I do not care. Get 'em, Cam!

Exactly, as a college football fan, I wish Auburn would get the sanctions they deserve. As a Carolina Panthers fan, I'm glad Cam doesn't have to deal with the distraction of the investigation....

There hasn't been one single shred of evidence or even rumor that Auburn did anything wrong. The issue with his father wasn't even with Auburn.

There wasn't a shred of "evidence" that USC did anything wrong either, but everyone was so quick to call them cheaters and say the football program was dirty.....

Bush's parents living in a house rent-free the entire time that he was at USC and Bush receiving a 200k "loan" isn't a shred of evidence? how about the cell phone records of Bush's position coach that showed regular contact with the agents that loaned Bush the 200k?

to even try to compare the USC case to the Auburn investigation is ridiculous.

Apparently you didn't watch the special then.

why's that? i saw the special. did i miss the segment where Cam returned his Heisman?

i'm not saying that this 30 for 30 was an attack on Cam. all i'm saying is that epsn spent almost a full year trying to make Cam Newton seem like a horrible person. if there was *any* truth to the crap that they were spewing, it'd be easier to understand their motivation. i'd like to think that, by now, most Carolina Panthers fans realize that he's not the person that the media tried so hard to convince viewers that he was. if anything, he's the polar opposite of that person.

 what Bush's parents were getting in SD had nothing to do with the school, Bush yes, but not USC. Also, I guess you think regular contact = two 90 second phone calls after 1 a.m. Maybe actually know what you're talking about before you try and debate it....

the RB coach's cell phone records confirm that at least one USC employee knew about the agents. they didn't self report and they got hammered for it. what's the problem there?

Read the report. Reggie Bush called McNair from Lake's number before Lake "claims" he ever called McNair the two times he did. The NCAA didn't even find concrete evidence that is was Lake on the phone. Hell Lake claimed he talked to Carroll but never produced "evidence" for that either, the NCAA just chose to take the word of a convicted felon.... So as McNair told the investigators, he had no reason to believe it was anything more then a friend of Reggie's phone. Also Lake didn't even contact McNair until the night before Reggie declared for the draft. Like I said, research what you're debating...

The NCAA said that would-be sports marketer Lloyd Lake contacted a USC assistant in January 2006

A couple of phone calls right before Reggie declared =/= regular contact but keep trying to spin poo however you want....

And the problem is the penalties don't fit the crime....

This is my last post arguing with you in this thread though, it's already been derailed enough by the two of us. Like I said though, research stuff before you throw it on a wall and hope it sticks....

As for the piece, I thought it was awesome...gave a great look at one of the greatest college football rivalries and some of the best players for each side....

    • Completely agreed.  TBH, we have had so many great players that are in my favorite list, and I hate to narrow it down to one, but Cam is it.  Which is crazy, because you would think it would be more of the guys I grew up watching, but no.  Cam was the single most impactful player to ever out on a football uniform imo.  And like I said in an earlier post, I always felt a kinship with him in a lot of ways…  the way he was treated and judged for the off the field stuff in Florida and having to overcome all of that and fight show at back.  And although I am not a black man, I have always been welcomed by and accepted more by minorities, and thus, I know what it’s like to be judged by appearances rather than the content of your character and who you actually are.  I know what it’s like to be stereotyped and written off or mistreated for your mistakes.  I know what it’s like to be held to a different standard while your peers don’t have to meet that same standard.  So I always related to that.  And the way he came in and just electrified the whole franchise, man…  I still think about it often how much it sucks that because of how talented he was, our staff out so much on him and that ultimately cut his career short.  You’re right, there will never be another Cam…  I think Josh Allen is the closest thing we will see for a long time, but Allen is not the running threat Cam was.  Cam could run you over or around you.  That was THE absolute funnest time to watch our team ever.
    • It definitely needs more specificity than is baked in now.
    • The weirdest encounter I had with a pro athlete was waiting in line at security at Mile High Stadium when I used to get the company suite tickets almost every week because I was the only employee based in Colorado. There's a small checkpoint accessing the suites that virtually no one knows about that you can usually squirt right through. I was standing there and looked over my shoulder and there stands John fuging Elway waiting in line behind me.  This was during the The Golden Calf of Bristol season right before he became GM. I just said "They make YOU go through security?" He's like "Yeah, ain't that a bitch. I literally have a statue out front and I gotta go through security like everybody else." I've heard mixed things about him but he was super nice and down to earth with me that day.
