I feel real confident in saying....

I am the number one supporter of building up the defense this year! I made this prediction based on RR's remarks about needing a scat back! So, I went and looked and found nothing really worth being called a scat back other than James! In turn I started this thread for discussion! I don't want to see us wasting a potential defensive pick on a true scat back, but if it did happen I am also predicting a server crash. I would love to have a thread discussing our true needs broke down by position. Imo, CB is not high on the needs list and I'm curious why so any people think it is!

I think Joe Adams from Arkansas would fit the "scat back" bill nicely...and he can be had in the 4th or 5th round. He's a shifty little sucker that has played RB, WR, and is an electric return guy. I think he's exactly the kind of player Rivera was talking about.

This is one thing Rivera has said that makes no fugin sense. We already have too many mouths to feed in the back field. If we get a "scat" back I hate that dumb ass term btw. It means Williams is getting cut after this year and I think thats a bad idea. Williams,Stewart, and Newton command enough carries that is not a need, sorry Ron.

I don't think Rivera is talking about getting another running back to share carries. I think he wants another dynamic guy to use in the passing game, much like NO uses Sproles, who can also be our PR. Basically, he wants a guy that can line up anywhere and opponents wouldn't be able to predict the play, but is primarily there to be a pass catcher.

That's why I like a guy like Joe Adams. He has mostly lined up at WR, but has also taken snaps at RB and actually been used as a RB. Not to mention he was the leading PR in the nation (I believe).

That would be fuggin awesome! But I don't think 27 rushing attempts in 4 years fits RR's idea of a "scat" back. But who knows

Well, since there is no official definition of what a scat back is, I think we have to consider the context in which Rivera made his comments. And he made them when we were playing NO, and he saw the effect that Sproles had on that offense (not to mention the effect he had on SD's offense when he was there). And the point isn't to find another RB, it's to find someone that can be lined up in the backfield, but has the ability to go out in a pass route, take a handoff, work the screen game, whatever. And Adams has demonstarted he can do all of those things.

Heck, if we do bring in a scat back, even if it's James, they would likely only have something like 27 rushing attempts in four years in this offense (as long as we keep our dynamic duo, which I think we will). The idea is to bring in a guy that can bring a new explosive wrinkle to our passing game. Don't get too caught up in the "back" aspect of the term, the position is really a glorified receiver.

How is Rainey Garbage ?
they might be talking off the field stuff.

on the field, though, he looks like a definite want for a scatback and esp. as a STs ace. the dude is faaaaaaast and i'm not just talking 40 time. he's quick and elusive. he probably won't take much of a hit, but he'd doa good job of outrunning people.

biggest thing for me still is his punt blocking ability. anyone we take in the later rounds needs to be for improving STs, imo.

Maybe I'm being harsh labeling him as garbage, but he strikes me as having poor field vision. It's blahness watching him play and usually the wow moments came from him being elusive in situations he shouldnt have got into. Just no it factor there. Even his "highlights" are boring. But I'm not a coach or scout so don't take what I say seriously. Just Joining the ARM chair GM fun
