Hurney Speaks....

Just finished the annual pre-draft press conference with GM Marty Hurney. Here are the high points, as they were:

-- Nothing new on Julius Peppers. He wouldn't acknowledge any talks of any kind with anybody. Said he's talked to Carl Carey but not Peppers himself, but wouldn't go into those conversations.

"Nothing's changed," he said. "We franchised Julius with the expectation of having him back."

-- Said that although nothing's done yet, he still hopes that QB Jake Delhomme is here "long-term." Described his passer as "young for his age," and seemed hopeful that something gets done down the road.

-- Was short on specifics on the draft, but said that the receiver position is particularly deep. Also cited depth on the offensive line as a primary need, when asked about restocking the defense.

-- Was short on specifics (can I just copy and paste that?), but indicated that injured defensive starters Damione Lewis, Jon Beason and Chris Harris should all be well by training camp, if not minicamp.

-- Said he's encouraged about adding LS J.J. Jansen, but didn't rule out a future offer to incumbent snap-er Jason Kyle.

biggest things i got from it all (gantt and reed's takes)

1) planning on peppers being here and that he won't be a problem

2) planning on jake being here for a while

3) going to go BPA in the draft...whether offense or defense. heavy leaning on the oline depth.

other than the third item nothing really new here.

Yea, I love how the Panthers want to invest big money and time into a 34 year old QB who is one injury short of kissing his job goodbye lol..

You can't tell me if Jake gets put out for the year, that the Panthers are going to stick with him next year with as old as he is..

I bet too that if Fox falls short of the playoffs this year and sticks with Jake even if Jake is healthy, he can kiss his job goodbye.

I don't think you realize how old Jeff Garcia was. And ALL Players are one injury short of kissing their jobs goodbye.

Every player is one injury away from kissing their job goodbye.... Cadillac Williams comes to mind.

Again, you're dealing with hypotheticals.

That could be said about almost any coach in the league. Coaches get a QB that's their guy and they stick with them.

Your whole point here is that the Panthers are in trouble if Jake gets hurt? Any more brilliant insight for us?

Seamonk - Yea I realized how old Jeff was but even at 38, Jeff was more mobile then what Jake was at 20 years old lol... Jeff's job security looked real awesome, considering if you compare how Jeff and Jake performed as a QB... well, we can obviously tell who was more efficient as a passer... which speaks alot on talent on each particular guy.

Jake is just too old for the Panthers to want to lock in anything longterm. Stupid move if they do.

Get a clue! It's purely a salary cap move. By extending his deal they lower his cap figure for this year. Then down the road if they need to cut him he won't hurt the cap.

Cadillac is atleast young and can rebound from injuries. Jake on the other hand, give him a few concussions next year and dislocate his shoulder and he can kiss his career goodbye.

That could be said about almost any coach in the league. Coaches get a QB that's their guy and they stick with them.

So your saying if Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Jay Cutler, Aaron Rodgers to name a few... if they fall short of the playoffs this year, their coach is going to be fired? Jake is in a worse position in this case then those guys... So why even try saying that its one in the same?

    • I don’t think we would spend that kind of money on a LB that can’t play all 3 downs. It said he played 331 coverage snaps last year and only gave up one TD so him not being a coverage LB seems kinda like BS?
    • Moton should be back in 27 just due to the guarantees. I can't see us cutting him and eating that cap hit. Trade might be a bit different, but how many teams trade for 20m tackles?  I wouldn't be surprised to see us take 2 this year, 1 in the first and one in the 4th that has potential to play inside if they don't develop as quickly. Our line is awfully thin atm with the unknown injury Hunt got during the postseason. Even if Hunt's ok, we still lack depth. I could see is walking away from this draft with 2 tackles and a center, especially if we move down to pick up an extra 3rd or 4th.
    • He was so up and down for 4 seasons. They declined his 5 year option for a reason  Oloukon has been their LB1.  Evero loves to send pressure so my guess is if Lloyd is going to be used a 3 down back here he’ll be blitzing on 3rd down a lot. Would’ve liked to have signed someone a lot quicker if that’s the case. Lloyd isn’t very explosive. Used to be
