Draft Picks Q&A's

Here is my favorite part of the draft process each year - the Q&A session with our picks. I apologize if it's already been posted but I didn't see them anywhere and thought everyone would find them easier this way... And I figure we can update it with tomorrow's picks.

Everette Brown

Sherrod Martin

For some reason, Martin didn't seem as happy to be a Panther as most of our draft picks I've read in year's past.

I think he was just shocked to be picked on day one

lol, you may be right.

I just thought that because most guys respond by saying how big of fans they are of the Panthers, or how great of an organization they are... blah, blah, blah... Whether they're lying or not, they at least try to appear as though they like where they went. He just kind of disregarded it.

This bit from Brown sums up why people shouldn't get all hyped up about who we're supposedly scouting or talking with:

On if he was expecting to be selected by the Panthers: Not at all. My first time talking with Carolina after the NFL Combine was Sunday when I was on my way home from North Carolina. I received a phone call that they were very interested in me. I honestly did not think that this would happen.

Good stuff from Brown:

On his effort and intangibles: I think that with my effort and the passion that I play the game with, it speaks for itself. My effort on the field is just undeniable to where I feel like I can't be denied and I'm going to play my best and play 110 percent, 110 miles-per-hour every play full speed. That's one thing that coach saw on film that he really liked. He said my takeoff and my stance. They said that they're going to let me put my hand in the ground, in the dirt and take off. I'm looking forward to getting to work and doing it with the Panthers.

On if the Panthers were the team he wanted to be drafted by: If I had one team that I could have gone to, it would have been the Carolina Panthers. I didn't think I had a chance to be playing with the Carolina Panthers, but if I could have picked my team, I would have definitely picked the Carolina Panthers. That was my hometown team. That is the team I grew up watching. The only NFL game I've ever been to was in the Panthers' stadium. I'm just looking forward and eager to get in the stadium and get to work.

I like this kid.

    • Yep - honestly though, I thought his coverage was as good as you could possibly do on a man coverage crossing route with Dak having all day to throw. Dak made a perfect throw and if it wasn't in front of Pickens, it could have easily been picked off. Seemed like we ran more man than I have seen our defense run so far this year. Defense also did a great job of playing their gap/zone responsibilities (even if Dak did pick apart our zone a good chunk of the game) - that screen play on the last drive could easily have gone for a touchdown if Moehrig didn't play his zone and make a great tackle. Biggest complaint about Evero was not blitzing a few more times (especially when Dallas was in the red zone). The few times we did it, Dak didn't look comfortable.
    • There was some pretty egregious missed calls vs the Chiefs in the Lions game, especially Kelce. The completion where he clearly used the ground to catch the ball. The hold in front of the ref as Pacheco ran by where the defender was trying to turn around and couldnt because Kelce had him by the jersey. Mahomes openly taunting after scoring a TD. 0 penalties after double digit the week before. Cmon.
    • People get trade happy and look at resources as barter items. They fail to see them as resources to be used to our benefit rather than someone else's. Right now, Chuba and Rico are massive benefits to us and a strong rushing attack so greatly benefits any passer, much less a young one like Bryce still is.  And the better our running game, the more our offense can eat up the clock, the less time our defense is on the field. And that is priceless, too. Don't mess with the running game. Don't mess with the receivers. Maybe look at our O-line and think we may have hit on something good during these injuries. Look at our D-line and seem some strength evolving there. Our secondary has its good spots and some that are still developing. Our linebacking corps did well this last outing. Our special teams are on a major upswing as of this past week. Heck, even our QB is showing us a little something right now that we can build on. Perhaps putting out a yard sale sign right now might be less advantageous than looking at the team and saying, "You are all part of something good that is happening. We want to see that continue to grow."
