That's not what he meant

From the Red Zone: Bucs do spin control

Joe Smith and Stephen F. Holder of the St. Petersburg Times reports first-round pick Josh Freeman participated in a NFL.com chat session Saturday and made a startling revelation about recent conversations.

The former Kansas State quarterback said he pretty much knew what was coming.

"I felt that all along," he wrote. "Even when they picked up Byron Leftwich. It was something they told me — they told me it was a smokescreen, everybody would think they didn't want a QB. They said they were ready to trade up. I think it worked out great. I was sitting there with my family and enjoying it, and I got to go to the team that I wanted to go to."

Coach Raheem Morris indicated that Freeman misspoke.

"We talked about that (Sunday) morning," Morris said. "Sometimes quotes are taken out of context. The young man was asked the question and he kind of answered it the wrong way.

"Hey, Leftwich called him this morning and told him he's going to put him in a headlock when he gets down here and then after that he's going to put him under his wing and get him ready to go. So, they talked on the phone this morning and I think we're okay."

I'm sure Leftwich is enjoying this :sosp:

Hoo boy...I think I was a bit too hasty thinking the kid could handle the media.

That Morris comment, while giving me a chuckle, doesn't strike me as something a HC should say either. And it isn't the first time he's said stuff like that. He seems to be a nice dude, but not sure I would have made him HC at this point. Of course there are a bunch of HCs that are about 12 YO that I think aren't ready yet so who knows? And Rex Ryan has said some out there things as well (maybe this is why he's taken FOREVER to get a HC gig).

    • Bryce is like Jerry Seinfeld.  Bad jokes, very limited on screen charisma, and a bad actor.  But they surrounded him with the greatest supporting cast of all time (writing included) and you can name the show after the guy.  Unfortunately QB does not work that way.
    • I just feel like TE is an excuse to the BPA rule, unless you really just have NOBODY at TE, which I personally don't feel is the case for us with the 3 we have right now. Even if you were to say a TE was our actual top ranked player on the board when our 1st round pick is on the clock, I can't see it being such a big gap between him and players at positions of more of a need to where it's then a dumb decision to not take the highest ranked player left on the board. Because yes, a game changing TE can really change your team, but at the same time, it also is the least important position in today's game, since realistically the best TEs are really just big WRs these days anyways, so if you have a good enough WR (and RB) room, TE becomes less of a need. I also think if Coker and Horn Jr pan out, XL could be used in more of a TE type of role where we line him up in the slot and hope to get favorable matchups against smaller DBs or slower LBs.
