What do you expect from this or any first round pick

Ok Lets be honest- all any team hopes for is for all their picks to

1. make the team- i.e. no drug/criminal/dog fighting issues

2. make the team- i.e. be able to produce

3. play on Sundays-

4. Become a starter

5. Become elite franchise type player

I just think it is ridiculous all the expectations surrounding this Brown kid-

everyone is jumping all over the FO because they traded a 12t NEXT year for a pick this year- A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

Dont give me this "next years draft is sooo much better" spare me, how does anyone know how any of these picks will turn out

So far this Brown kid sounds from all accounts to be a Good Person, aha chek mark 1 down, FAST-FAST-FAST, aha check mark two down, AT LEAST a situational pass rusher, aha check mark three down

The failure rate of first round picks is 50% at best anyway so why not get first round talent now at a reduced price! Even if he is just a rotational guy, at his price it will be worth it cause he wont be cut/practice squad fodder and if he makes some sacks so be it-

I guess my point is that lets leave the jury out AT LEAST until next year- Besides if all goes well all we would have lost is the LAST pick in the First round anyway

RB and LB are the only positions where this is a realistic expectation of anyone but a top 5 pick. Everything else is just gravy.

IMO, Brown doesn't even have to start right away to be successful. Just look at what Abraham is doing in Atlanta as a pass rush specialists. He is not an every down player, but he still has a big impact on every game. Even if he doesn't come in and get sacks, he usually draws attention away from the other D-linemen so they can take advantage of one on one match ups. If Brown can do that as a rookie, I'll be happy.

either start or make an immediate impact/get a lot of PT.

TD, D-will and stewart didn't get the start but they were used pretty heavily.

williams was the only one that wasn't used enough right out of the gate and should have been the starter.

50% success rate for starters might be true on most other teams but the panthers have have pretty much a 100% (since dan morgan was drafted in 2001) and i don't see that changing anytime soon. with the exception of our 2000 pick all of our 1st rounders this decade either started right away or played an immediate large role on the team. dan morgan was the first that we lost and he stayed on the team 7 years.

i expect a lot out of brown...either starting (which is most likely the intention of fox/hurney) or at least seeing a lot more than 3rd downs. he will be used and used often. it may be a lot of pressure but i don't think that fox/hurney would have made the move to get him if they didn't think he could handle it.

Thomas Davis is the last Panthers 1st rounder that I can remember having a hard time breaking into the starting line up. That really wasn't his fault though, because he changed positions 3 times in his first TC. He was certainly no bust though.

yeah, TD it was hard trying to find a role for TD on the roster but there was no question why they brought him in and that was to beat vick. they just had to find the best place for him to line up to do his spy work. i think they found it.

Start maybe was the wrong word but they should produce in the first year. Being in rotation and having a impact in the game.

About coming in and starting... I say it all depends on the position and depth. Alot of guys take their first year to just learn the speed of the game and develop as a stronger player down the line...

Even with Ben Roethlisberger, he was sitting on the bench... being groomed behind Tommy Maddox, Maddox goes down week 1 and Roeth is thrown into the fire (won 15 games his rookie season but his passing never really translated well until his 3rd year as a pro)

Not tryin to harp on Ben, but even like Peyton Manning... Peyton didn't do all that great to start his career off... Just get your guys use to the tempo of the game and bam... their talent comes out and speaks for themself.

that's part of the reason we haven't drafted a QB. fox/hurney wants people drafted in the 1st who can come in and start or make an immediate impact. that isn't likely going to happen with a QB. they save the later rounds for developmental picks.
