Why Do Some Of You Guys Still Have Doubts About Brandon Lafell?

When Lefell puts up 800 yards, while adding more td's, then we'll know he's becoming the reciever he was drafted to be.

Gonna be pretty hard to put up almost 1k yards when your not the number 1 receiver imo.

Esp considering how we use our TE's and also with Williams and Stew on the team.

Im more concerned with Lafell getting open and making catches when needed / thrown to

And last year he did just that.

LaFell actually was pretty solid last year. Football Outsiders ranked him 32 among all receivers on DYAR which is a measure of his value on plays where he caught the ball compared to replacement value or what would happen to his plays if he were gone and someone else had to step into his place. On DVOA he was 11th which measures his value per play compared to the average receiver. Also interesting was that his rating was significantly above Nannee who was actually the number 2 receiver for much of the year.

A simple answer to the OP's question (thread title) is this:

This fan base has little to no faith in anything that this coaching staff says. (I am not one of those people)

But there are plenty of them here with no lives that love nothing more than to talk poo, because we quote "haven't done anything" lately.

Soon enough, this fan base will turn into bandwagoners of their own team. Something I thought was impossible prior to becoming a member of this board.

because we haven't seen it. we've seen flashes (and i consider all of last year a flash potentially...see keary colbert) but so far caution is the flavor of the day in regards to WRs in carolina.

in the last 10-12 years how many solid WRs have we seen come up through the ranks here?

i think most hopes he works out but until we've seen continued success (for more than a year) most aren't believers.

Exactly. how many legitimate #1-2 hell #3 WRs has Hurney drafted?

Lafell and Gettis working out would mean more than becoming better than last year or overcoming an injury, they will be Hurney's part of first successful WRs draft picks (out of quite a few, high picks too), which is iportant when you claim to build through the draft. Reasons of skepticicsm are obvious. LaFell has shown flashes of a #2 reciever but Smitty won't last forever and someone needs to step up. WRs have been the weakness of Carolina forever, same as QB. Mushin was a true #2, and no one IMO is really even close to playing like he did.

Hurney Picks them he doesn't develop them that's up to the coaching staff. We need to get away from blaming Hurney for not having a WR.

1. Anybody would have picked Jarret in the 2nd round he had top WR talent. Nobody could've seen that he would be a dumb ass and not learn the playbook or work hard at his job.

2. Keyshawn was a really good #2 wr. He just didn't mesh with the coaching staff and locker room.

3. Colbert is still the leading rec. leader at USC. You can use Hindsight 20-20 and all that. But most of us would have drafted him.

4. Everybody was hyped about DJ Hacket and Rod Gardner when they were signed as FA. So we can't blame Hurney for them not working out either.

When he can contribute as a 2nd wr like Muhammad. Ill shut up.

Once in a while, he goes out and make some nice catches, but i want to see him being able to get open more often. Be more consistent also.

I hope he can contribute more this year. Like how Smitty broke out in his third year.

LaFell is a number 2 receiver and played like one at the end of the year. He is not good enough to be a number 1 like Moose was when Smitty went down in 2004. He can do well against a number 2 corner or a safety but isn't good enough to go against a number 1 corner. Lets see what happens down the road but he improved from year 1 to 2. He only got 36 catches but did average 17 yards a catch.

    • So answer the question. Why did Chark and Hurst have the same metrics (go look them up, I did... and one was actually worse in LA) with Justin Herbert? Why did Mingo have the same metrics with Dak? You're right, there is a common denominator, just not the one you're trying to make.  Why could DJ Moore get open with Bridgewater, Allen, Cam 2.0, Darnold, Baker, Williams, Bagent? I'll answer the question for you - because he is a good WR unlike Chark/Hurst/Mingo.
    • I mean I just don't understand the argument. Baker and Sam both have been pro bowl QBs post their time here. And you just said yourself that is due to him having a damn good roster around him and they are well coached. You're even saying the bad baker is still there somewhere, but he is in a good organization with good roster and coaching that they are getting the best out of him. Why does Baker and Sam get all that benefit of the doubt but when it comes to Bryce it must be a BY9 problem, not an org or team problem?  Hell I got a guy below you arguing with me that Chark/Hurst/Mingo sucked because Bryce wouldn't throw them open. It's ridiculous how far the stretch goes.
    • Correct.  It’s really hard to get open in the NFL when opposing defenses gameplan and cheat coverage/routes on all your players because they know your QB can’t make certain throws/plays.   magically no one that comes to Carolina can get open or make plays with the ball in their hands…..it’s like there is one singular common dominator to it all.  BY makes playing defense way too easy.   NFL players are too good to allow one side to cheat coverage and not respect all the potential threats of a route  so you can dial up a great play.  But if corners and safeties just cheat coverage and know X and Y happening on route/threats….getting open gets hard when they just play it one way.  Getting open has a lot to do with the different threats a WR can pose on a given play.
