This was not your typical first day on the job.

New Charlotte Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap jumped into a pre-draft workout Thursday, speeding the pace to the extent former North Carolina star Harrison Barnes called it a “track meet.’’

After the draft candidates left, several current Bobcats worked out. Within minutes of introducing himself, Dunlap jumped in the action, setting screens on big men, fine-tuning driving angles and reminding players to raise their chins to better focus on the rim when shooting.

This guy has a lot to fix, with the Bobcats coming off a 7-59 season. Apparently wading into the pool is not his idea of a good swim.

“We’ve got to roll our sleeves up and get going now,’’ Dunlap said as he departed the practice court. “We can’t figure this thing is going to come to us. We’ve got to go to it.’’

At Wednesday’s introductory news conference, Dunlap promised to speed the Bobcats’ tempo and to set a high standard for work-capacity and fitness. Thursday morning he acted on both those agendas. Four Bobcats from last season – Bismack Biyombo, Byron Mullens, Matt Carroll and Cory Higgins – worked out. Dunlap interacted with each one and set a training-camp pace.

“The word will get out that there’s work being done here,’’ Dunlap said. “It’s voluntary (this summer), but come to work in pairs and threes, not ones. We don’t want our guys coming to this facility by themselves a lot.’’

Translation: Dunlap wants it going viral that, for whatever is wrong with this roster, is shouldn’t be outworked. That’s an imperative he expressed in his job interview, and it stuck with those who hired him.

Bobcats vice chairman Curtis Polk said this of Dunlap’s job interview:

“In the NBA there are probably 20 games a season when the other team just doesn’t want to win. You have to be mentally and physically in the condition to steal those games. He’s going to prepare them for that.

“You might not have the best shooter, you might not have the best ballhandler or the best defensive scheme. But there’s no reason we shouldn’t be in the best physical shape possible. This guy will get them into the best physical shape and then into the best mental shape. There are nights where we won’t have the most talent, but we will win games.’’

Nobody wins without talent, and the quickest way to address that is wisely using the No. 2 pick in the June 28 draft. So when Dunlap turned a low-key half-court game into full-court 3-on-3, he was searching for draft candidates ready for his pace and his expectations.

Barnes said no other NBA team asked him to go full-speed baseline-to-baseline.

“You can tell he definitely likes to play fast,’’ Barnes said, “that he likes intensity, likes guys who lay it on the line down on the floor – hustle plays.’’

Said Dunlap: “It affords us (the chance) to see things game-like. … I tried to turn the screw a little bit; not in a manipulative way, but that’s the game. You get bad calls and things change quickly – it’s a transition game.

“You can’t come in here and be unfit. And fitness for a pro basketball player is all year long.’’

Notes: Dunlap said he’s “inclined’’ to coach the Bobcats in July at the Las Vegas summer league, if his bosses concur. Typically assistants coach summer-league games, with the head coach observing. But sometimes head coaches stay on the bench their first summer with a new team. …Two more candidates for the No. 2 pick – Kansas forward Thomas Robinson and Connecticut center Andre Drummond – are expected to work out for the Bobcats Friday. … Mullens is apparently no longer a candidate to play for host country Britain in the London Olympics.

Great read. This is why I liked the hire when it was first announced. This guy will instill in our players that no team will out hustle us. I already miss me some basketball. I can't wait until next season, because I feel we're going to improve a lot.

      Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......

      You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.

      THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
