Replacement refs

With week one being complete, what's the verdict on these guys? I'm not sure if I'm watching them more closely because of the situation, but seems like they are not very consistant. I guess that's to be expected. I mean, it's not like there weren't any bs calls with the original refs, and people are always going to disagree and blame officials when stuff doesnt go their teams way, but some of the calls these clowns are making and/or missing are horrible.

They just said on tv that they have a contract until week 5 at the least. Thoughts?

From the few games I watched, they weren't as good as regular refs, but not by much. Here's a decent article that pretty much sums up my opinion.

Other than the SF GB game they were pretty okay. I'm willing to give them time considering what the reg refs want. I hope the NFL doesn't give them another dime.

The guy that refereed our game had a bit of a hard time announcing stuff... but otherwise they were decent.

The biggest gaffe I saw was the SEA-ARI time out thing... but that ended up being a non-issue.

As long as they call games evenly, even if the miss some calls here and there, it's not a big deal.

I noticed in the Saints* game. There was no more of that throwing the flag when brees throws an incompletion for some BS roughing the passer to move the chains on 3rd.

They definitely miss more but I don't want them to pay any more money to those goons. They are lucky to ref NFL games to begin with.

Several sports writers have suggested that the Refs and the Refs union go look at the Air Traffic Controller strike in '81 and be careful they don't repeat that history.

Recall the 1981 PATCO strike. An air traffic controllers union walked in violation of a no-strike agreement. Ronald Reagan fired PATCO members who refused his order to return to work. Everyone thought the replacement controllers would do a terrible job, and instead they did fine. PATCO members then relented and asked to return to their high-paying cushy jobs, but it was too late. Many of the strikers never again found jobs as good as the ones they angrily denounced.

IMO they are very dangerously close to doing just that.

I believe that during "negotiations" last week, the NFLRA believed (based on their pre-season performance) that the replacement refs would have some major screw ups this first week and it would give them leverage with the NFL. Looks like it was a gamble that they lost. They may very soon regret it.

I think the replacement refs have gotten better every week since preseason. With the new replay rules regarding touchdowns and turnovers, there's less depending on a refs quick decision. They can afford to make more mistakes. They just have to remember to err on the side of caution, don't blow plays dead or rule incomplete when there's doubt.

I'd axe the regulars if they aren't willing to be reasonable.
