The zone read has made Carolina a bad running team, but...

No worse than many others.

Remove Cam Newton from last years rushing stats:

The Panthers (other than Newton) averaged 5.3 yards per attempt. Good. Damn Good. Very Damn Good. Best in the League good...even without Newton's rushes and scrambles figured in.

Fast forward to this year.

Assume that Cam Newton has made the correct read in every situation and given the ball to a RB.

Remove his scrambles.

In short, subtract his rushing stats completely and the Panthers are averaging 3.7 yards per attempt.

Bad. Very Bad. BUT no worse than:

Arizona 3.5

Dallas 3.6

N.O. 3.7

Oak 3.7

Miami 3.7

G.B. 3.7

Pitts 3.7

Jax 3.8

Atl 3.8

It is important to remember that when you line up in the shotgun and don't run the zone read...

You are passing out of the shotgun.

Nothing fundamentally changes within the passing game at that point.

You are simply passing out of the shotgun like every other team that passes out of the shotgun.

Maybe I'm dense but the point you are trying to make eludes me.

The contention of many people is that Carolina has struggled in the passing game because they are constantly behind the 8 ball due to their inability to run effectively.

I actually agree with this to a degree. The Panthers were simply a fantastic running team last year...even discounting Newton's wonderful contributions. And it helped their passing attack considerably.

This year, with the zone read as their base offense, Carolina has struggled to run consistantly, putting them in more 2nd and 3rd and long situations and affecting the passing game.

My point is simply that many teams struggle to run the ball effectively and are constantly in those type of situations.

They are simply able to execute their way out of it.

Interestingly, last year the team with the lowest average per carry in the NFL???

The New York Giants.

Kind of shocking, actually.

Not really considering the ways in which the giants won last year which was coming from behind (having to pass). I know this doesn't necessarily affect the average, but if they were down in the first place it was likely due to their inability to get the ground game going.

I'm a BIG fan of TonyN... Some of the most observant posts in the past year easily

LOL!

This is almost as bad as the comment about Conte having to live off of 5K for a week...

The Giants have a quarterback who can execute them out of ANYTHING

Really, cause I don't ever recall you doing an ounce of research for any single one of your posts. This guy put in some work and educated fools.

Btw, GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's my last thread posted with 'actual' research, just to shut you up.

You must have missed this trolls threads the past couple of weeks, he's just trying to save face now.

BTW, how does 1-7 feel in fantasy bruh?

Agreed. I think someone needs to sit down and educate Cam on film watching. Has anyone ever seen him make an adjustment on the fly due to defensive looks? I'm a huge Cam fan, but when he makes the wrong choice on the zone read (pulling when the BS-DE sits/ handing off when the BS-DE crashes), it makes me question his football IQ.
