What about Chris Petersen?

I see all this talk about grabbing Chip Kelly if Rivera gets canned, but what about Chris Petersen, HC of Boise State? He is an offensive minded coach like Kelly, but has also shown to have a pretty good defense. Also, Boise State has produced some pretty solid pro players in the last couple drafts. Compared to how many Boise State players enter the draft, I believe it's a pretty high success rate. So, what do you think about Chris Petersen? Should he get a look at least if Rivera does get fired?

Yes. I posted in the Chip Kelly thread that he is the only college coach I would want to take a deep look at.

He maximizes talent better than anyone in CFB

He usually has really good defenses that play smart and aggressive.

He runs a somewhat pro style offense.

He has had success with many different QBs and QB styles.

His son's health issues makes him hard to get out of Boise though.

At BSU Chris Petersen has to get up and really game plan for 2 games all year. In the NFL its every week. You can't keep pulling rabbits out of the hat every week.

I always think this is bullpoo. First of all the WAC was always a little bit underrated.

But I look at it this way. In 2009 when Chip Kelly had all offseason to game plan for Boise and Boise had all offseason to gameplan for the great Chip Kelly. Oregon didn't even get a first down until the 3rd quarter and only scored 8 points as Boise dominated them. Oregon won the Pac-10 that year I believe. Then when TCU' Patterson and Boise both had a month before the bowl game to prepare that same year. TCU could only manage 10 points and lost.

in 2010, Frank Beamer had a whole offseason to prepare for Boise, Boise still beat them. VT won the ACC that year Same year Boise had a month to prepare for an explosive Utah offense before the bowl game. Utah managed only 3 points.

in 2011 Mark Richt had a full offseason to prepare for Boise and vice versa, Georgia didn't even belong on the same field as Boise as Boise blew them out. BTW Georgia won the SEC east that year. The ASU had a month to prepare before the bowl game and vice versa Boise blew them out.

My point is that these great coaches and teams that won their BCS conferences (or played in title games) that year had just as much tim to prepare for Boise as Boise did, Boise out coached all of them.

Not to mention Bob Stoops having a month to prepare for Boise and getting beat also in the best Fiesta Bowl (i think) ever played.

All with inferior talent.

For next season I want to stand pat, I believe patience is prudent in our case.

You know right now I actually agree with you. It isn't like we are getting blown out or have been non-competitive. We have had some bad luck, bad playcalling, bad plays, etc. that have just kept us from getting over that hump.

If we were getting blown out every week I would be wanting a change but I think we are sooo close, and we fugged up our offense early, but our defense is playing much better.

I reserve my right to change my mind as the season continues, but right now I think Rivera and his staff deserve at least the first half of next season to turn this thing around.

    • My tailoring green idea was not for him to be the starter but to add some value beyond just a developmental quarterback I think size speed is something Bryce doesn't have he has those and would immediately feel the fourth and one package and possibly red zone and some power packages for us
    • Do you have against Willis I believe you're around when we have the draft with corral and Willis were on the board and me personally I was banging the table for Willis as early as round one but a lot of people thought corral was better but it's amazing with a little coaching and time can do with me I always go with potential and upside versus oh the guy just plays football you know sometimes that's not enough
    • I know or needs and this probably isn't with a lot of people want but if he's available at 19 I don't think you can discount that he would be the best player on the board I think with 43 speed he's as fast as leggette. 63240 something he would stretch the field  Strike fear over the middle of opposing linebackers and also probably cure our long time history of no serviceable tight end since Greg Olsen I think a lot of needs like tackle maybe linebacker could be filled and free agency to the point like they did last year where we fix a lot of this and draft the best player we can on the board.  After his combine and the numbers in the 43-in vertical I'm not sure that he will be available but if he is I bet that he's highly considered what say you
