Jeff Withey, Center, 2013 Draft Prospect

Since, a fellow poster made a post for Myck Kabongo, I thought I would make one for Jeff Withey. Withey is quickly rising up my board and he had a phenomenal game tonight.

Jeff had a triple-double tonight in the form of 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 blocks!!!

The 7'0", 240 pound, center has played amazing so far this year and is quickly rising up draft boards. He is a prototypical center who is without a doubt NBA ready. He is a great rebounder, shot blocker, and scorer; he also has a pretty good post game. If Withey keeps it up, he will definitely be worth a look.

Withey is averaging 13.8 points per game, 8.0 rebounds per game, and 5.0 blocks per game so far this season.

I'm not opposed to this guy.

Withey had a pretty good game on Davis in the Championship game. Dude is a blocking machine and has some good offensive skills. The dude is a true 7footer wit great NBA size.

The only knack on him is that I believes that he's a finish product already. The ceiling is not high on him. You know exactly what you're getting out of him if you take the kid.

I wouldn't be upset if we came out of the draft with Withey. Although, I'd only draft him if we slide out of the top 10 (11-12). There are quite a few prospects that I like more (namely: Shabazz, Noel, Zeller, McAdoo, Austin, Gobert, Len, Mitchell, Poythress).

I should have been more specific, that's my fault.

This thread was based on our current standing and only applies if Chicago gets our pick and we get Portland's pick.

At pick 13-15 Withey would be a safe pick, and a contributor. I can see him being a 10/7/3 guy night in and night out as well as a serviceable starter.

Realistically, my two favorites are James Michael McAdoo and Alex Len with my dream being Cody Zeller.

But you never know how things are going to turn out, so you have to kind of keep all options open.

Yeah, I should have specified the pick number, that's my bad.

Very good point, he is NBA-Ready (which can be a good thing, but also a bad thing), Withey would be a great pick at 15, other than that it's probably a reach.

Yeah, I don't see a huge ceiling for him, but if you can get a guy who will be a solid contributor right away (especially a rim protector, considering they are at a premium) in the middle of the draft -- you do it.

Although I am a bit concerned tbh.

I feel that he might be a Cole Aldrich clone. Cole Aldrich averaged 15 ppg, 11 rpg, and 2.7 bpg in his SO season, and averaged 11 ppg, 10 rpg, and 3.5 bpg his JR season.

I think that Withey is more athletic and an even better rim protector, but their games seem very similar to me. Now if Withey can averaged 6 bpg all year, then forget that I said anything, but if he comes back down to earth a little bit and averages 3.5-4 bpg then my concerns may hold true. Granted I haven't watched him very much throughout his career, so I can't really form a real opinion at this juncture. FYI: I don't think that Aldrich is a bad player in the NBA. He needs more playing time, but he's never going to be much more than a 15 mpg role player that can protect the rim. I'd like to get something more than that in the lottery.

    • I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.
    • I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
