Albert Breer's 2013 GM List

I don't know anything about these guys, but Gamble was with the 49ers for 7 years. They sucked for 5 of them. Are you sure he's not getting credit for Harbaugh's success?

Harbaugh's done a great job, no doubt, but he inherited a roster loaded with quality players on both sides of the ball.

Gamble deserves plenty of credit.

Good stuff, Ruff. In addition to these three, I also would like to see Omar Khan (Steelers) and Tom Telesco (Colts) get consideration. Both have a wealth of experience working with winning organizations. Kevin Abrams (Ass't GM/Giants) and Brian Gaine (Ass't GM/Dolphins) may also be worth a look.

I like Omar Khan.

Please no Telesco. Colts previous drafts sucks! That organization were ruled by P. Manning's arm for more than a decade. It has nothing to do with Polian or anyone else, except maybe Dungy.

7yrs, good overall drafts, but bad coachings.

Look at the previous players they took the last 7yrs.

Good drafts. Maybe, I don't know. But look at the list of his successes that someone provided:

Crabtree, Iupati, Anthony Davis, Willis, Bowman, Vernon Davis, Kaepernick, Culliver, Aldon Smith

These... are all 1st round picks. And high ones. You can't really call someone a good drafter because their top 10 picks had success. It's expected. You have to dig deeper, and looking at their non-1st round picks over the past 7 years, not a heck of a lot of them stick out as impressive to me.

He inherited a team loaded with talent because they've had top 10 picks for 7 years due to sucking.

I could draft well too if I got a pick that high every year. But how many hidden gems has he found? Late round surprises?

I'm not crediting Tom Gamble with the good or bad of the draft. Gamble's job, prior to the 2011 season, was to scout upcoming pro free agents and find the appropriate market value for those players. He didn't extend out from that position to college scouting (with the Colts) until 2010. He was, however, the college scout for Bill Polian from 98-04 in Indy.

I think that Gamble makes an awesome candidate because of the fact that he has done all of this. He's not someone that's strictly signed contracts, or watched the cap, or negotiate trades, or scouted... He's someone who has done it all, from top to bottom, during his entire career.

Very true. Frankly, I don't know enough about their late-round drafting. All I know is they have a roster to drool over.

They have also been very successful with FA acquisitions, and we all know that can be a very hit-or-miss affair.

Ah I didn't know he was more of a pro scouter. I do like that they went after Carlos Rogers while Rivera literally said "There's nothing available that we don't have in Munnerlyn."

Yeah, that's the one reason I really like Gamble, like I said, he's very well rounded. Here's what his bio says on the 49ers site:

While working closely with General Manager Trent Baalke, Gamble oversees both the college and pro personnel efforts. In his previous role, Gamble monitored every NFL roster with an emphasis on scouting talent of upcoming pro free agents, while also maintaining continuous depth of personnel on the 49ers roster. In 2010, Gamble had been assigned additional responsibilities in collegiate scouting in order to maximize the use of his extensive experience in talent evaluation.

During his time in the NFL, Gamble has helped build nine playoff teams – five with Indianapolis and four with Philadelphia. Prior to his arrival in San Francisco, Gamble served as a college scout for the Colts from 1998 to 2004 under veteran NFL executive Bill Polian.

Gamble originally entered the NFL as an assistant in the player personnel department of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1988. He stayed with the Eagles through 1994, serving as a college scouting administrator, area scout, contract negotiator, and later served as the director of pro scouting.

From 1995 to 1996, Gamble served as a defensive assistant/quality control coach with the New York Jets. He then worked as a part-time college scout for the Carolina Panthers before serving as a pro scout for the Baltimore Ravens during the 1997 season.
