When its all said and done it boils down to Cam and who we surround him with

I think the careers of Rivera, Gettleman, future OC, and fan satisfaction boils down to Cam growing emotionly and providing him with the tools, protection, and the development he needs to flourish.

This league is all about the QB and Cam is freakish with his talent but he needs to further develop the mental aspects of the game.

To me Rivera is very good at making the best of questionable talent on defense as he did with our secondary and banged up dl last year. I am fairly confident we will hire a competent OC. On offense, Cam needs a better OL,a quicker release, and weapons that have the ability to get open and make plays. The rest is up to Cam to run this offense. If we score 30 points per game we will be a playoff contender.

Well if the decision to give Rivera one more year backfires we will have wasted first 3 years of Cam's career.

I'm waiting to hear on the new offensive coordinator hire. All of this is a moot point if we whiff on that.

I do not see that happening. Having Cam should help us in getting a good OC

Gotta do nothing but put weapons around Cam at all costs. Everywhere.

Best thing in this thread was the comment that Rivera can do things to get the defense adequate. Where we do more with less is on the defensive side of the ball, because Rivera has the ability to stretch talent there.... offense, it will boil down to how much talent we have. Rivera can squeeze the lemon harder to get more juice from less talented players on D.

Cam actually has one of the fastest releases in pro football. This was shown in our 3rd preseason game vs the jets measuring release time.

I'm sure cam would get rid of the ball quicker if we used more of them crazy slant routes, outs and quick hooks. Seriously whenever we go to pass the ball, if its not a screen pass I can't see any of our receivers on the screen, all are at least 10-15 yards downfield.

I agree. I think a solid front 4, Kuechly + one other good LB (could be TD, Beason or anderson, who knows whats happening there), and a ball hawking free safety would be enough to keep our defense in the top half of the NFL. Put the best scrubs we can find everywhere else on D (although I hope we do keep captain).

    • The problem with these summary stats and rankings is that they flatten out progression and assume an even performance throughout the year. His first 3 or 4 games of the season don't really tell you anything about his current level of capacity but more about where he started and what his floor was last year. Given his last several games were against playoff teams, that gives you an idea of his current ability coming into the season. But it will serve more as a floor than a ceiling given the upgrade in talent on offense. And a better defense should give us more stops which results in shorter fields and more opportunities. And going into his third year there is no reason to suspect he will regress. His success wasn't  based on being superhuman but being smart and taking what was the defense was giving him. Distributing to the other guys not trying to do it on his own. He was great at the end when pressured and consistently moved the ball. That makes him a great game manager which is what we need. Something that is easier to do and relies on everyone else rather than having to be a top physical specimen or do it on his own. No one can predict the future but to say we haven't improved much is crazy given just having the Browns anchoring the defensive line will shut down the run and make sure QBs won't be stepping up in the pocket.  Assuming Evero got the message to can the prevent defense and bend until you break philosophy.
