Those are two that I could live with. I don't think that we needed to make Beason or Kalil the highest paid at their positions....but what ever.

CJ, didn't really have a major bone with that one, but the amount did seem a little crazy.

My biggest beef is and has been the DWill contract. That was just stupid.

I agree D-Will was too much at a position where we had depth. The other ones are high, but not outrageously so. And when you ask guys to stay on a 2-14 team, you probably have to pay for it. We had no leverage and were looking at losing a great young pass rusher (Johnson), a top three guy at his position coming into his prime (Kalil), and a guy that was our leader on defense and had put up hall of fame numbers in his first four years while never missing a game (Beason).

The timing of it kinda sucks and injuries have made the Beason and Kalil signing look a lot worse, but I understand it. Hurney always bummed me out with his draft day trades more than any of those signings, even Deangelo.

We just spent more on positions that I don't believe had a ton to do with winning outside of DE.

LB's are great to have, but on a 4-3 D, corners, DE's, S's, and DT's are more important IMO, positions that we have ignored for a while now.

I think defensive end and center are very important (offensive line as a whole is vastly underrated in my opinion). Inside linebacker and Running Back can be very important, but we have messed that up with using high draft picks and cap resources to create redundancy.

I will end my piece on the matter by saying that I think Hurney was good at finding good individual players, better at it than a lot of other GMs, but he seemed to have no overall vision in place. He got pieces, and they were mostly good pieces, but they have largely ended up with a glut of talent at a few positions, and we couldn't even field them all at the same time if they were all healthy because there's no place for everybody. Lack of big picture thinking is what failed Hurney. He should have let a few talented players, like Deangelo probably, walk in order to balance out the roster and have it work together.

Charles Johnson was one of the biggest free agent names that year for his production, potential and young age. He could have went to a team that paid him a lot money and been definite playoff contender the last two seasons. You really think a rebuilding 2-14 team with no stability at the QB position (at the time) had a lot of leverage in getting him to stay? DE is a premium position we had to pay him, thats the bottom line.
