Notre Dame safety Zeke Motta visited Panthers, Falcons

Safeties tend not to be the fastest players on defense because of the buffer they have with the offense. They instead rely on their intelligence, awareness, and agility to get themselves in the right position. Motta may not have speed, but he sounds like a smart player. It's not like we're considering him for 14...possibly good depth at a position of need.

Meet Ed Reed.

The Roy Williams safety doesn't work in this league any more. Your Safeties have to have speed to play against all these spread formation passing attacks. Plus with all the fast TE's becoming major weapons. It's not good to have a slow safety.

The 40 yard dash time only measures a player's track speed. While it's a load of crap to begin with, it's more of a relevance for CBs since they will be going full speed with WRs on a 9-route. Safeties need to have everything in front of them and the awareness to notice an offense's tendencies...which requires quickness and intelligence. If they are going at their top speed for a good portion of the field, chances are they fugged up their coverage and are having to make up for their mistake.

Sure, top speed is a nice perk for a safety, but not entirely a requirement if they have the other tools necessary for the job. And especially not for a 6th round prospect who would be good depth someday.

    • Btw... only Mitch fugging Marner has a better +/- than Key 🔑!!! And, Mitchy needed 5 more games and almost 100 more shifts to get there.
    • I was honestly flabbergasted to see Rod send out Stanky and the boys to to matchup against their top line to start the game. The reason that line has been so effective is because they've been matched mostly against 2nd and 3rd lines all year. You've got last change. Use it to your advantage.
    • Nobody played well on defense last night. But, the vitriol towards Chatfield (and to a lesser extent, K'andre) is bigly misplaced. People (not just you) just refuse to accept how bad Slavin has been this season. And, I get it. Canes fans (and informed analysts) have spent nearly a decade trying to explain to casuals just how good Jaccccob is at hockey. 4Nations happened and the hockey watching public started to listen. National media even started floating the idea of creating a new award in his honor. Then this season, he gets hurt. It happens. NBD. But, when he finally came back, it wasn't the same. He'll get back to his old self in no time. Probably just some rust, it'll be fine. Only, it wasnt rust, and he's not fine. He's bad right now. It wasnt just last night. Although, that was absolutely the worst game of his NHL career. Slavin (-4) currently has the 3rd worst +/- of anyone left in the playoffs. We've  been begging the world to recognize Jaccob Slavin's greatness. And, by the time we finally got people to listen, he shits the bed! I blame Kash!
