Ken Lucas

Ken Lucas has never shown me anything as a defender. Been watching these guys since 96' but REAL closely in the last 4 - 5 years, picking out players to focus on during the season. After watching KEN LUCAS , he's completely shown me nothing. I think it's because i compare him to CHRIS GAMBLE when it comes 2 "holding their own in their position" Ken has had a play here and there in the past 4 years, but GAMBLE has had a significant prescense on his side and has deteremined the outcome of a lot of our games. Can't say the same for Ken Lucas and after paying him attention the past two years or so, lets just say that i don't have any pics up of him in my office ( check my photo albums ). It would be good to see him out next season, and the DFense get back to the status that made me name myself after them to begin with.

Woah there big boy, maybe you should recall his first two years here? The game against the Patriots in 05 I think it was basically sums how good he was. He was ferocious against the run and the pass.

His decline is because of age and also because the team is making him play out of his element and he is timid right now. If they would let him be aggressive he would make more plays. Then again, if he could play aggressive that would mean we have a good pass rush and that too would make him look better. They have essentially neutered him.

God I wish people would get off this crap. The reason for it is Godfrey. He is a rookie and because we made our D more complex in the second half of the season he has been confused alot. It will iron out. Fox is a guru of DBs.

I will respectfully disagree, in part. Certainly Godfrey is a rookie and will makes mistakes. Nonetheless, Lucas has been in decline for 3 years running. Godfrey wasn't around then. I'm not hatin on him...I like him. Reality is what it is, however. I suggested the same for Morgan a few years back, and many wanted to pin the problem on Davis being young. Nope, just a player in decline. Beason has more than proved that. I wish Lucas well, and hopefully he will perform better than he has in the recent past. We'll need them all to play well to go deep in the playoffs.

I remember the Patriots preseason game last year, where Stallworth and Brady, for two straight plays, picked on Lucas. Then, the third play, at the 10 or so yard line, Lucas finally jammed Stallworth to save a TD and Brady stopped throwing his way. It sort of reminds me of his recent play: he gives up, gives up, and finally reverts to what made him a good pickup, which is his aggressiveness.

I spoke with him in training camp last year, too, and he stated then that he had a, "deep thigh bruise," which had been an issue in 2006 as well.

BTW Our team needs to stop celebrating when an opponent drops the ball and we're still 5-10 yards off of them, because this is just foolish and fans/replay show we didn't do anything to stop the play. If we're in their hip pocket, sure, but not when we had nothing to do with the pass not being completed. We should look at these as failures in coverage, just like we do when they catch the ball.

Marshall isn't better than Lucas, his play at the top CB spot has shown me this. Don't get me wrong, Marshall is still pretty good, but Lucas is still playing great. I don't think many people watching the games can see his coverage a lot, because you just see him when he messes up because of a big offensive play by the other team.

As a former hight schoo and college safety and cornerback, I wonder if the people who are faulting Lucas are watching the whole game and really understand DB responsibilities, or the game of football period. The DBs are who I focus one every game I watch and as a Panther's fan I watch their DBs every play, not just when one if them is beaten for a pass. As far as Lucas' play, he is considered by football experts to be a very good corner, as he is. If a guy is beaten on ONE play during a game that doesn't mean he had a bad game. Do you guys disocunt all the times thsi season a QB has looked at the receiver being covered by Lucas and then checked down to the 2nd and 3rd option. That is a win by Lucas fellas and the DB coach will grade that play as a win. In the Panther's defense, they often have their corners playing in the flats, meaning they pass them on to the safety. Godfrey, even though he has a lot of talent and I think he'll be good, has blown a lot of coverages this year. Lucas and Gamble at various times have had to hustle to catch the receiver, making it look to the casual observer like they were beaten when they weren't. The D doesn't play strickly man, even though they could with corners like Gamble and Lucas. Against Tampa Bay Lucas was beaten on ONE play and he was pushed off by the receiver at that! On another play Marshall blew a coverage and the ignorant radio heads were slamming Lucas. Fortunately Marshall admitted it was his fault in a newspaper article. As much as I like Gamble, he was beaten on 4 or 5 passes agaisnt the Giants. Lucas was beaten on one. Lucas was the victim of a terrible call by the refs when he had great coverage. Lucas hasn't slipped much if at all. The reason Gamble is making all of these plays is because teams are throwing his way more often because they know who the better coverage corner is. If a corner is beaten once in a game and knocks down a number of passes, plays good run support as Lucas did against the Giants, he grades out well by the DB coach. Every player is judged by the coachses (and should be by people who understand the game) by how they play the ENTIRE game, not by ONE play our of 100 snaps. Lucas and Gamble have gone up against a lot of very good receivers this season. Receivers always have the advantage becasue they know what the play is, especially if the QB is good.
