GM Jim Rutherford says Eric Staal hopes to be on stationary bike by next week. Good first step in rehab of knee injury.

Eric Staal (knee) "hopes" to ride on the stationary bike by next week, according to Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford.

Staal suffered a third-degree, right-knee sprain of his MCL as the result of a knee-on-knee collision at the IIHF World Championships. He's expected to need three months to rehab the injury, and this is a very good first sign that he's feeling better.

Tuomo Ruutu underwent successful hip surgery after the season ended, according to Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford.

In 17 games this year, the 30-year-old forward had four goals and five assists. He only entered the lineup in late March after getting his first hip surgery in December. Ruutu is expected to be fine for training camp.

Update for Alex Semin

Alexander Semin says his head is feeling good after suffering a concussion to end the season.

Semin missed the last two games of the regular season because of the concussion, which has apparently healed while Semin spends the offseason in Russia. Semin would've been an unrestricted free agent this summer, but the Hurricanes signed the winger to a five-year extension worth $7 million per season at the end of March. Semin had 13 goals and 44 points in 44 games this season.

Here's a few tidbits from Staal on his recovery...

Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal says there's ''no question'' he'll be ready for training camp after spraining a knee ligament during an international tournament.

Staal said Tuesday that rehab is ''a slower process than I thought and hoped'' but he hopes to test his knee on the ice by August. He says the team's medical staff is ''not going to rush it.''

Staal says he ''wouldn't classify it as a clean hit'' because after watching replays, he isn't sure what Edler tried to accomplish with it.

    • Those TDs passes you saw Sunday is what I think you will see bryce at his best. Those touch passes he can lob to receivers over the defenders heads. Long as receivers can get significant separation and bryce does overthrow those passes which we seem him do a lot. He is never gonna be a guy that can throw a laser into a receivers chest with a defender draped on him downfield unless its short pass or within a couple feet from the endzone.
    • If teams play us honestly and take that deep stuff away we may be able to operate good enough underneath to counter that. It is about time we started trying to force them to respect it.    But I think people should enjoy the win for two weeks because what’s in front of us doesn’t scream playoffs to me. It would be shocking if we swept TB. They aren’t Atlanta.  And even if we sweep there can be no let down.    I saw the stat of our record coming off a loss. Pretty good. What would it be coming off a win lol? Without looking, it has to at least be pretty upside down  (I count it to be 2-4).
    • Win the division from Bucs........BY implodes in the playoff worse than Delhomme and we finally get rid of BY as our QB. Get ready for 2026 with momentum for once.
