2013 NHL Draft Thread

Recommended Posts

A few NHL analysts think we'll pick Darnell Nurse at number five...

Personally, I wouldn't put much stock in that since Rutherford has said that he is more interested in taking a winger.

However, if we trade down; I'm guessing Nurse is the target.

The Hurricanes would move the No. 5 pick for a top four defenseman. Thinking is that if they keep the pick, they will pick Darnell Nurse.

Rutherford says their is a lot on interest in the no. 5 pick...

Canes general manager Jim Rutherford spent much of Saturday on the phone, fielding inquiries, talking about potential trades.

The Canes have the No. 5 selection in Sunday's NHL Entry Draft and Rutherford said, "There has been a lot of interest in our pick. If we do end up making a move, we would like to have a first-round pick of some kind. We have a few things to think over."

The Canes are looking to obtain a top-four defenseman before next season and Rutherford believes a trade, and not free agency, may be the most sensible way of doing it.

Defenseman Andrew Ference of the Boston Bruins will not be re-signed by the B's, and Rob Scuderi of the Los Angeles Kings also is due to become an unrestricted free agent. But Rutherford said signing free agents usually results in giving long-term contracts with sizable salaries, making a hockey trade that moves salary more desirable.

Asked the chances of the Canes trading the No. 5 pick, Rutherford said, "I don't know. I couldn't handicap it. It's a unique year. There seems to be more players available."

While looking for a defenseman, Rutherford would not rule out trading for a forward Sunday. He said there likely would be no trade for a goalie.

"Getting a defenseman is our top priority before the start of the season," Rutherford said.

I say keep the 5th pick and trade Skinner (I brought up trading Skinner for a top 4 guy earlier in the off season in my Off season thread) I'd rather have Nich then anyone else in this draft and I'd be upset if they took Nurse.

The thing I brought up in that thread is that there is some word leaking out about some players being upset in the locker room about Skinner being a puck hog. (J. Staal maybe, not sure about it. Heard it on the team forum)

If push comes to shove and Rutherford trades the pick, I do the deal with Philadelphia and trade for Coburn, draft a forward (Mantha, Lindholm, or Horvart), and sign Lecavalier.

Go into the season with the following lineup...

Jiri Tlusty - Eric Staal - Alexander Semin

Jordan Staal - Vincent Lecavalier - Jeff Skinner

Victor Rask - Riley Nash - Tuomo Ruutu

Kevin Westgarth - Brett Sutter - Patrick Dwyer

Drayson Bowman

Justin Faulk - Tim Gleason

Joni Pitkanen - Braydon Coburn

Ryan Murphy - Jay Harrison

Jamie McBain

Cam Ward

Justin Peters

I hope not, I don't want Skinner on the top 2 lines at all unless the only time he touches the puck is to shoot, none of this I'm playing 1 on 5 BS that I've seen the last two years. Use the 5th pick and trade Skinner, there's not but 1-2 top 4 guys that I'd make that swap for and Coburn isn't one of them. Pick Nich and trade Skinner for a top 4 guy if any trade is made.

If they can't find a team willing to take a Skinner for top 4 guy straight up, stay put. The talent gap between Nich and the 11th pick is huge and Coburn doesn't make that gap up in this draft. Nich has superstar potential and would be the Consensus #1 pick if he wasn't from Russia.  If he's not there at #4 then the trade makes more sense.

"If you can't tell I've really soured on Skinner and don't want him no where near the top 2 lines on the Hurricanes.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
