Ginn

he'll get blown up in the middle for sure

going that fast just makes it worse

If they send him across the middle.

You could also go the NE route. The Pats teach their guys to duck and cover if they see a guy within twenty feet of them. Purists hate it, but it works.

honestly there is a part of me that is saying that 49ers and Dolphins fans have been saying this about Ginn. I'm not sure if he has ever performed this well in preseason before, but I'm still tentative before i can be confident in this guy. I obviously will hope for the best.

I don't know about preseason, but he did go for almost 200 yards in a game against the Bills while he was in Miami.

i'm sure they will sooner or later.  can't send him deep or every time he's in.

i don't think smitty would like that very much.  i can only imagine his reaction.

The Vikes got away with using Randy Moss like that for a good while, though that was at least in part because Moss didn't want to run his pansy ass across the middle (doubt that's an issue with Ginn).

The fact that he's a number three helps. He won't be on the field every down, so they can afford to be somewhat selective in how they use him.

unfortunately, i don't think we have a receiver not named steve smith that we can really trust to go across the middle, and even smitty has had his drop issues the past few seasons. olsen softens up over the middle too. we really need a tough receiver that can handle the middle of the field.

Hartsock maybe. Perhaps Brandon Williams if he sticks and keeps progressing.

I know that's not an especially encouraging answer :(

i haven't seen enough of hixon to know if he's that guy or not.   williams definitely has that kind of potential...hartsock yes, but doesn't have the speed and athleticism we need for that.  he's more of an "aaaaaah you forgot about me!" type of threat.

we need someone to consistently go across the middle and make those tough catches.  i'm not writing any of them off on that, not lafell or gettis or armanti...we just don't know yet, and that's what we really need from one or two of them.   how many of our drives have stalled over the last two seasons because of drops by receivers across the middle that were catchable?

enough to cost us games by less than a touchdown.

Will say this: At season's end, there are two things I'd love to hear.

1) The sports world talking about San Fran's decision to let Ginn walk using phrases like "What the hell were they thinking?"

2) Ted Ginn echoing Steve Smith's comments from years back about Ricky Proehl making him a much better receiver

Everyone softens up in the middle of the field. It's the nature of the beast.

Hixon has always played well when he can stay on the field. Just like this year he would get hurt and slip down the roster.

His ability to blow the top off a defense is going to make it much much easier for everyone else. I can see corners giving him huge cushions and not bring able to slide coverage over to smiths side

He is already helping with his preseason performance and film. Teams will have to account for his speed and provide help deep or play him soft. That should help Smitty
