Carolina Panthers: the 28th Pick

But, at 28, my shortlist would look something like:

WR

Jordan Matthews

Kelvin Benjamin

Allen Robinson

OL

Tiny Richardson

Taylor Lewan

Xavier Sua-Filo

TE

Jace Amaro

ASJ

I would not go TE at the backend of the 1st unless all of those other prospects are gone, which, would be highly unlikely. If you really think we need a TE, picking up CJ Fiedorowicz at the end of the 2nd would be alright with me. He would add another legitimate receiving option immediately, while still giving us a 1st round pick to make an immediate impact.

I would really consider moving picks (2014/2015) to get back into the 2nd round. But, that's just me.

Yep me too. We are very close to being really good. This draft is built for our needs, so why wait. That's also why I'm in for trading Hardy for picks like we discussed in that other thread.

We get a couple good WR's, an OLineman and a couple corners and the future is really bright.

I doubt trading down is an option, tbh. We're too close to the end of the draft, and most of the high-profile QBs/WRs will be gone.

Everything is all assumptions right now.

But, it Gettleman does explore the scenario there are only three teams that I can see being trade partners.

(1) Cleveland Browns: they have two 1st rounders and a high 2nd rounder (no35).

(2) SF Whiners: two late 2nd rounders (no56/TBD).

(3) Minnesota Vikings: one 2nd and two 3rds. Vikings are in need of a QB.

To trade Greg, we're going to need to sign him to a contract first. It would work like a sign and trade in the NBA. However, that's not possible in the current CBA... Well, at least not the way you're thinking. To sign and trade him, we would have to sign him to guaranteed money, or he would just refuse to sign. When we sign him to that guaranteed money, after we trade him, we're still on the hook for all of that money, which would immediately be accelerated against our cap. So, we're talking like, a 25-30 million dollar cap hit. IMMEDIATELY. That's not going to happen. It's why you don't see sign and trades in the NFL like you do in the NBA.

Why would they trade back into the late rounds of the Draft? It doesn't make sense. Cleveland is prime position to move up wherever they want in the Draft to get a QB. The most likely place they will move is to St. Louis at #2, if a QB jumps out at them (I'm guessing that Bridgewater and Bortles go #1 and #2 overall). SF would need no reason to jump back into the 1st... They are stacked with talent. And Minnesota wouldn't move back down the board, they would try to move higher to get a QB (like Carr). At 28, we're not in any of those scenarios.

So we couldn't use the franchise tag on him then trade him without some of it counting against us?

I understand the sign and trade part but I thought the franchise tag was different

It would still accelerate whatever his cap hit would be of the franchise tag to us, I think. Actually, I don't even know if franchise tagged players can even be traded.

So:

The designated franchise player will have his one year salary guaranteed if he elects to play for the team that designated him with the franchise tag and if he does not negotiate a contract with another team.

According to that, the salary is guaranteed, meaning that yeah, it would fug up our cap.

Ok makes sense. Back when the Chiefs tagged and traded Jared Allen who was 25 at the time and coming off a 15.5 sack year (sound familiar lol) to the Vikings for a first rounder, 2 thirds and swapped sixth rounders the vikes signed Allen to a long term deal after.

So what if the team negotiates a deal with that tagged player before the season does that let the team who originally tagged the player off the hook?

Quoting the Greg Hardy part. Yes, we'll have to find a team that is willing to give him a long term deal before we can tag and trade him. Same situation like what Seattle did with Harvin.

now, why I believe that Cleveland could be a trade partner. Right now, they have 10 picks not including comp picks later. Most teams with that much picks will try to trade some away. They wont be able to sign all these guys too. Teams with that much picks are most likely to make some moves on draft days.

SF with Harbaugh is always aggressive in the Draft. Hey, they were stacked with talents and still moved up for Eric Reid. The 49ers could really trade up if a corner or wr drops.

Minnesota has need at DE/LB (pass rusher). At no8 they could possibly take Barr or Mack. If Tennessee doesnt take Carr, he could eventually falls all the way down to 28 and that would be a great spot for Minny to take Carr. Spielman is an aggressive man: Harrison Smith 2012/ Patterson 2013.
