If we can address the WR position through Free Agency and grab some good talent. I'm done with the Chark type players too. Give me top tier WR and we should get Sanders if he falls to 33. I have seen a couple of sites that really like this guy. I, to be honest, am not very up on college players but if this guy is the real deal we definitely could use him. Our TE group has been terrible since Olsen left us.

Exactly what I was saying. If we Franchise tag him, we are stuck with negotiating with him and he's hell bent on getting 30 million and all we get is another year of half-ass performance. If we go Non-Exclusive Tag than we throw him out there and see what other teams are offering without losing him if we want to match their offer.
-
Exactly. If we outright Franchise Tag him than he can't negotiate with any team. If we use the Non-Exclusive Tag than if someone offers him a better deal than what we are giving him, we simple refuse and take the two picks. If they are offering him something similar to what we were offering, we match the offer and get him for the price we wanted in the first place. If no one offers him a deal than we are in the position to offer him a lower deal than we initially offered him. We lose nothing by going this route.

Smitty on the 2024 WR Draft Class (w/cliffnotes)
DaveThePanther2008 replied to Bear Hands's topic in Carolina Panthers
I remember last season he was all in on Mingo. It's a bit too early to give up on him but Mingo needs to take some big steps forward before we can say Smitty nailed this one too. I do like Smitty's takes on most of these players. -
I would use the Non-Exclusive Tag on Burns. Let him negotiate with other teams and if they make him an offer, we can either match it and keep him or refuse and get two 1st round picks for him. Win / Win for us. If another team thinks he's worth 2 first than they can offer him the 30 million he's asking for. If a team offers him basically what we are offering him, we can match the offer and we get him for what we were offering all along. Non-exclusive tag This is the most common tag used each offseason. Under the non-exclusive tag, the player is given a one-year deal based on an average of the top five salaries at the respective position over the last five years, or 120 percent of his previous salary, whichever is greater. So, it is cheaper than the exclusive franchise tag, but more expensive than the transition tag. However, the player is free to negotiate with other teams. Should the player sign an offer sheet from another NFL team, the player’s current team has the right to match the offer. If they do not, they receive two first-round draft picks as compensation when the player leaves for a new team.

I think the good thing is he's still an asset if we have to move him inside. It won't be a total waste of a pick. Plus it seems many believe Brady C. could handle the LT spot. 2024 will be a great time to figure things out. 2025 we can focus on upgrading QB or LT depending on how Young and Icky progress.

I've heard that before as well. That could also be because he's learning the position.

Tim Donnelly on Trent Brown, Evans, Burns & Motown
DaveThePanther2008 replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think the question should be. Is he going to produce enough to warrant such a huge salary? I do believe some Huddlers are underestimating him. Especially if you consider that teams were running on us more than passing. Teams not having to fight in the 4th quarter makes it pretty easy for them to just run the ball. How I feel about it is this. We traded two of our most gifted athletes in CMC and Moore without much in return. That's on Fitterer. We are in a rebuild mode and young talent could help Morgan and Canales build the team in their image. Not to say Burns wouldn't be a good piece but if we received assets for him. I would jump at them as long as a first and a couple other assets came with it. I would not trade him unless the deal was in our favor. As you said many teams value him more than what we (Huddlers) do. We screwed the pooch on CMC and Moore. We basically gave CMC away and Moore is looking very much the same. Trade him for what he's truly worth or keep him. I see both sides. -
How does a first round pick go from having a good rookie season with a lot of promise to a bust in one season? Is he just that bad? Or The Panthers had a terrible offensive line scheme? Not to mention the injuries to our interior line. I am hoping it is the latter and not the former. This will be his third season under his 4th regime. I don't know what Reich was trying to do but IMO there were far too many hands in the cookie jar, and it showed on the field. The most difficult part of this is Canales is going to have very little time to figure out which one it is. He'll have to look at tape of 2022 and 2023 and decide whether 2023 was a sophomore jinx or he'll be fine.
-
No, I never implied he would have to carry this offense. It's why I think we have to have a great offensive line to protect him. He was destined to fail last year that's for sure. Bad free agent signing and terrible draft picks didn't help him whatsoever. I am reserved on Canales and Morgan. I am hoping they have a plan and will implement it and get good players here whether through the draft or free agency.
-
I want him to succeed but he's going to really have to show he can survive the NFL. I said before the draft last year that I would back whoever we chose. Young is it and for our sake I hope the hell he shows he really is worthy of the #1 pick. His weight and his height are factors, not to mention he doesn't really have a great deep ball. I am pulling for him, but I am also ready to face that fact that he just doesn't have the build for a Franchise NFL QB.
-
The fact is Young's weight is a major problem. He can say whatever he wants to say his weight is but, the truth shows on the field. At less than 200 lbs when a 330+ pound defensive lineman grabs you. You're not getting away. It was very clear that if someone got to him the chances of him breaking the tackle were slim. They ranted and raved about his pocket awareness and how well he could maneuver the pocket. That is as long as no one gets his hands on him. 9 times out of 10 he's not going to break the tackle. We got spoiled by Cam who regularly broke tackles and made big plays. Young isn't going to do that. This is why we have to have a stellar offensive line. Until we have one. Teams are going to come after him and bet they reach him before he can get a pass off. They don't have to worry about him breaking tackles and making big plays.
-
Young had an uphill battle to begin with. We surrounded him with players like Inch Sanders and stone hands TMJ. Not to mention a horrific offensive line scheme. Fitterer did absolutely nothing to help him succeed. I said last year that if we were going to draft Young, we were going to HAVE to have top tier offensive line. Beasts at every position and our backup would have to be up and coming beasts. If we don't build our line to a top 10 line. Young was a wasted pick.

Getting Crunch Time for the Panthers and Brian Burns
DaveThePanther2008 replied to 45catfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Many teams think Burns is legit Edge Rusher. We need to take advantage of this. Sign him and trade him. He's not going to make a difference in whether we win more games than we lose. We are in total rebuild mode and need to get assets for 2025. It's one of the reason's I would trade #33 for a 1st next year. I don't think we'll trade Burns before the draft. If we do, great. I just feel teams are going to want to keep 24's draft pick. We take a 2025 and a 2026 first rounder for him. If we trade #33 and get a 1st in 2025 for Burns and maybe a 3rd this year. Then we have our 1st in 2025. We have 3 firsts to use as bargaining chips for a QB should Bryce fail in 2024. If Bryce turns out to be the man, we are in great shape to add players that can be core players for many years. -
@Verge I like the mock draft. It addresses our biggest issues. Beebe and Bortolini makes a ton of sense. While I do not believe our line is as bad as 2023 would suggest, I do believe finding monsters we give us depth that we have sorely missed over the 4 or 5 season. More importantly we need to groom a new starting center and I like the Bortolini assessment in the write up. 5'8" scares me but the solid route running makes me happy. Sounds like a good #2. If we can get a #1 in free agency than our offense might actually score some points this year. Overall, with the choices you made with the limited number of draft picks. It's a good mock draft. Obviously, things will change once the new season starts in 3 weeks.

I get so tired of every game that is played the announcer have to say, "Analytics Says, go for it" However, you can't always take what one team is good at and another isn't. Forth and 2 against the Panthers, sure go for it. Against a top DL. Statically it's probably not a good idea. Dan Campbell proved Analytics WRONG. It's a game and different teams offer different outcomes. It's not something that should be uniformly based off of where you are on the field. Football sense should dictate a decision not Analytics. This goes for player evaluation too. You can't measure desire. You can't measure nastiness. The last time, I can remember, we had any prospect form the lower rounds or free agency that actually panned out was Andrew Norwell. I hope and pray that Dan Morgan and his staff really dig deep and find some of those players.

Draft Tez Walker!!
DaveThePanther2008 replied to Teddy2SuperBowlHeartBreaks's topic in Carolina Panthers
I like Dez and he got a raw deal with being held out for so long at UNC but, route running has to be a top priority for any WR we draft. If he's there later in the draft than we should take a shot but no with our 2nd or 3rd. -
Yeah, I think this guy is going to be a STUD. Had he had a full season with UNC his stock would have been much higher.

Let's not go too crazy with OL upgrades
DaveThePanther2008 replied to MHS831's topic in Carolina Panthers
It's a double edge sword. We need receivers to be able to get open and catch the ball, but we have to have an O-line good enough to protect our midget QB. So, which do you address first? Barring a trade I say WR. I say this because our WR Corp outside of Theilen was terrible. Terrible routes and no hands. This is a fact. We all saw it. However, our O-line was torn apart partially by injury and an insane scheme. As you said getting Corbett and BC back will help. Zavala should have never seen the field his rookie season. Too much to learn. I still think there is hope for him. Overall, I think the O-Line is fixable with what we have over a WR Corp that is horrendous. Canales and Morgan have their work cut out for them. They will have to decide if the O-line is priority or receiver. I wouldn't reach for any position. We should either trade out of the pick or select BPA. Whatever position we grab at #33 will most likely be an upgrade at that position. -
If the WR class is as good as many say. Take the 1st next year and a 3rd this year. IMO we need to get more top tier talent and 2025 gives us a chance to move around with 2 or more 1st round picks.
-
I think we should build for 2025. Sign and Trade Burns for 2 #1. If Horn actually plays well and doesn't get hurt. Trade him at the deadline for at least one 1st rounder. Trade down #33 for a 2025 first rounder and maybe a 3rd. Draft well with our remaining picks and go from there. We could possibly have 4 first rounders to use to get studs at each position. Also have the possibility to trade up for a QB if Young fails in his sophomore campaign.
-
So you're saying BPA. Pretty much covers it all.
