Panthers hire Josh McCown as QB coach
ECHornet replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
We’re throwing a lot of blame around now. QBs and scheme. I agree he’s had an uphill battle in that regard, but I also saw Shenault flash in one year about as much as DJ since we drafted him. He’s a good wideout. I just think he’s a strong #2 option for a contending team. -

Not sure. I stumbled on that link when I googled wide receiver rankings last night. I was exploring a thought I was having about trading for Tee Higgins. Ha -

He doesn't get open as well as you're portraying here. This site ranked him 89th in the NFL among wide receivers and tight ends at getting open in 2022: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/nfl-receiver-rankings/ -

I like DJ, but he’s more in the 25-35 range imo. -
Sam Laporta too. He’s in my top 3 to 4

Didn’t see much from Reddick tonight. I still like him as a player though.

Jalen Hurts with the squib Hail Mary

That’s a very slanted portrayal of the Bucs game. One fumble was due to a whiff from Ekwonu and the other an early snap from Boze when Darnold wasn’t looking. Also, one deep ball to DJ he had to come back for bc their dlineman hit Darnold as he threw it. The INT was truly terrible. You’re wrong about all of his stats being bad. He finished around middle of the pack in many QB stats this year if you extrapolate to 17 games.
-
True but year 3 with $100 mil to spend in free agency should translate to some wins or that QB and/or coach probably aren’t the answer.
-
And tons of cap space. It seems to be setting up as a defining year for Fields as far as career trajectory.
-
He shouldn’t have that issue next season with all they’ll be able to acquire with their cap space.
-
By the end of 2023, I bet many Bears fans will be wishing they drafted a QB at 1.
-
As my backup QB? At the right price - definitely.
-
4-2 as a starter this year would suggest otherwise, but that’s close to best case scenario for a non-rookie QB you’re paying ~5mil for.
-
Here’s where I see the disconnect on Darnold… Posters, like myself, suggest Darnold is worthy of bringing back on a backup QB contract. Other posters then come along and act as if it was suggested Darnold is our future at QB. No, that’s not what I’ve seen posted here. We need a backup QB. We have one QB on the roster and he’s never played a snap in the NFL. It shouldn’t be considered “looney” to bring a backup QB in to play primarily backup QB on a backup QB contract.
-
I’m not the one running around here posting incorrect info. It’s ok you missed that one
-
On a backup-level contract which is what I’m supporting….certainly.
-
Even including that game, many of his stats would have been good for ~15th in the league.
-
Sam's last game winning drive was <checks notes> the last game he played.
-
Corral = 23 Darnold = 25 He still has potential. He is a top 5-10 backup QB at minimum right now. That's worth 5mil
-
You're confusing me on the real Darnold. Saints game - agree that sucked. Tampa game - 23/37 for 341 yards, 3TD/1INT - credited with two fumbles. One a clear miscommunication from center snapping the ball early. The other a whiff on the blindside by Ekwonu where Darnold got hit as he threw. That's not bad QB play. Without the mistakes from the oline and defense, that QB play wins you over 75% of games.

Here's my actual post from January 7th... I give a range of 2-3 years with an out before the 3rd year. I posted a recommendation of 5-8mil per year but hedged with hoping he had his worst game of the year vs Saints so we could be on low end of those ranges. Then that actually happened. So now his market value is estimated around the low end (like I said) according to Spotrac and Over The Cap. You mad that what I hoped came to fruition?
-
And in the other 5 games he played this year?
-
I’ve posted many times before that Darnold for two years at ~5mil per year is a great value. At worst, we have one of the league’s best backup QBs on a backup-worthy contract. At best, he continues the progression we saw from him this year and we are paying a mid-to-low end starter backup money. Some of the QBs posters here want to draft are close to the same age as Darnold and still have the learning curve to tackle. He’s a 5 year veteran at 25 years old. I think the worst football of his career is behind him and, moving forward, he’ll be a top 20-40 QB for the next 5+ years. That’s worth 5mil a year.

Darnold played 6 games for us this year. Can you name one of those where he was the reason we lost?
