If it was more transparent I might get more into it, but as someone that is big on stats and data for my career, it just doesn't match my expectations and without transparency to see where my expectations are faulty I'd rather just not trust it

Right, haha. This is very true. The thing about PFF is that it's basically an index. It's a way to take a qualitative/subjective assessment of various plays and stick a number to it. That can have some value, but it's still just a subjective opinion in the end that is dressed up as objective. It isn't. In general most pff scores over a season match what most fans think of players. But individual scores in a game are sometimes seemingly wacky, and it is likely driven by elements of how the subjective play assessment is translated into a numeric score we don't know... E.g. if Paradise had a handful of incredible plays that were blown up by someone else, his score may skyrocket despite the fact he occasionally looked like a rag doll, depending on how these values get calculated. Oh well.

Darnold has accounted for as many TDs in 4 games as Teddy did in 8. In that time Teddy threw 6 INTs and had 2 games throwing over 300 yards. He averaged 40 yards less in the air than Darnold too. Darnold is unquestionably an upgrade. But he still does need to see the field better and make quicker down field reads. That's okay. This is a very promising start for his career as a Panther. Having things to work on isn't bad.

Meanwhile, over at that other expansion team...

Maybe because the situations are not even remotely close in any way shape or form. Please stop making me defend Urban Meyer. -
I don't know how anyone watches our games and can possibly come away thinking these two dudes are quality starters. I just don't.

It's so hard to know who the blame on the OL given how bad they seem to look as a unit. But how theres 2 of em in our top 5.... I swear whomever grades our plays does it drunk.

They beat a good Packers team and smothered a New England team that took TB down to the wire... I would say NO isn't as bad as the loss to the Giants, or as good as beating GB, but some place between...

Does anyone have a gif or clip of this play?

The Cowboys offensive line committed zero penalties

I don't know what can be done but it's ridiculous how it is handled now. If it is that subjective they should change the rules somehow. I would rather holding just be legal within some limits than this garbage. -

That's certainly possible. I suppose my perspective is bias from so long where it really has felt like we haven't prioritized the OL in a serious way for 5 or 6 years. -

They need to do something about holding. It feels like it is the single most inconsistently applied penalty there is, and it is so huge it really destroys drives when it happens... And when it just doesn't at all for one team it let's them neutralize an entire positional unit. I don't mean this just about the Panthers, either. There doesn't seem to be any consistency in what is and isn't a hold anymore. -

I'm honestly not sure why more teams don't prioritize the OL. I'm not going to pass judgement on the Fitt+Rhule combo just yet because we had so many holes this offseason, but if it doesn't become their main priority... I mean I know we were big on CJ and the move makes sense, but it's hard not to feel like the OL is getting neglected relative to DL and CB. -

I don't think there's a conspiracy here, just an atrocious ref crew. Still, our lack of halftime adjustments, especially on D, are what cooked us. If we can sort out the OL and get CMC and some of our D back healthy we will be in a different place. We are missing like 5 or 6 starters... Including our one superstar. Imagine the cowboys without Dak... Oh, we don't need to imagine, just look at last year... -
Who knew I'd miss Elflein... Ugh. I don't know what they are or aren't seeing in practice... But we have seen things can get worse on the OL... Personally I think we should give the younger guys some chances but then, if they play so poorly they turn the tide of a game... Given how competitive we've been, I can see the coaches avoiding that right now. But we need OL help. The D is severely banged up so I get them struggling. But the O?

Ideally we get a chance to meet again as fully healthy teams in the playoffs. I think we might see a full game of close football instead of just a half, then.

Home field advantage I guess? Heh -
Not just 2 starters. We have 3-4 starters on IR, including Horn that was playing lights out at CB, a starting safety, and Elflein from the OL (admittedly not that great anyway)... not to mention 2 other dbs that would be starting if they weren't on IR now... plus CMC and our starting run stopping DE inactive this game due to injuries. I'm not saying the Cowboys are bad or completely healthy, but the Panthers are really hurting right now.
-
They were the better team. Acknowledging refs helping them out doesn't change that... Fewer meaningful injuries, better half time adjustments. Maybe this will finally be their year to put it all together. Games turn on a few plays and it's pretty clear the refs had a huge hand in one of em.
-
Lol okay. Is that why the Cowboys did so well last year sans their best player? Sit Dak and let's play the game again. That's the difference between CMC and not. He's that important to the Panthers... Not to mention missing far and away our best defensive back, starting safety, etc...

Why we will have a winning record this year

Im not sure why you think Dallas is mediocre. They are probably top 3 in the NFC. The OL will hold us back, but the D is a bigger reason we lost today. -
Why we will have a winning record this year
mav1234 replied to lightsout's topic in Carolina Panthers
obviously taking one game at a time is most important, but I liked the approach to not getting too bogged down by losses, even a couple of 'em, if the team could rally for other wins in the 'quarter.' -
Darnold and the O as a whole could have packed up and went home for the 4th. They didn't. They fought hard and we were a couple D stops away from tieing or winning. Given the D should be our strength moving forward... I was glad our O didn't collapse and showed resilience. But it was still a loss.
-
we used an entire draft on D, our 1st rounder this year, and traded away our third next year too. We have invested so much into that side of the ball... disappointing to see a game like this.
-
if the team finds ways to suck less in the third quarter... really, 20-0 third quarter is why we lost. Dallas is a better team but we're not that far behind.
