Last December he was "dicing up" their defense in practice. Plus Kittle was comparing him to Josh Allen with the things he can do in practice. Sometimes these journalists are just wanting clicks/stories. Maybe a few members aren't happy because they wanted Mac and he looked great his rookie year. I think Lance has all the tools and the coaching staff to be great.

Matt Corral could've went in the first round to the Steelers
ForJimmy replied to EgoDogg's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yeah the good news is we drafted what should be our franchise LT, which was a HUGE need (pun intended). We also have some intrigue at the QB position and something for McAdoo to work with for a relatively cheap cost. OL and QB battles will actually have some interest this offseason vs watching journeymen OL get demolished and Sam battle PJ… -

The good news it Corral appears to have dropped because of off field concerns (Ian Rap mentioned the depression and alcohol) and that seems to be behind him (hopefully). Similar to Mills dropping because of injuries. Rudolph, Grier, and Mond were legit 3rd rounders IMO. If Corral can stay focused and read defenses (big if), he has a better shot to be a starter than the others. -
This makes sense if Ickey is struggling at LT his rookie year. Looking at last year's rookies Slater seemed fine stepping in at LT, but I think Sewell played RT primarily because they had a decent LT in Decker (who was already playing that spot), so it's definitely possible. I say he let him learn LT while Darnold is starting for the first few games. If he catches on keep him there (hopefully) work Corral into the starting lineup. If Ickey struggles slide him to LG for a bit and let BC play LT (as you stated).

My Thoughts on the 2022 Draft (Matthias Rant)

Exactly. If Corral is still a question mark like BC is, our staff has shown they will draft the higher prospect at an important position until the need is met. -
My Thoughts on the 2022 Draft (Matthias Rant)

What are you seeing that is similar to Will Grier? Corral has the quickest release I've seen in a while and it's very accurate. Seems to process things very quickly (could be because of the RPO offense). There is a post showing the 7v7 High School QBs where it was stated Corral had the strongest arm since Stafford to come through that program, so his arm talent and release/processing is instantly better than Grier. His speed/footwork is also much greater than Grier's. Corral dropped in the draft because of his off the field issues with alcohol and depression. The only thing physical that might have made him not a first round QB is his injury history/smaller frame. Will Grier was picked higher than he should have been because we liked the way he interviewed. The only similarity I see is we drafted both in the 3rd. Fitt also drafted Russ Wilson in the 3rd and wasn't here when he took Grier, so there is that. -
It seems easier to trade into the 3rd like we did this year. It was like the last pick in the 4th plus a future 3rd to acquire it.

The one thing that is nagging at me about our QB pick...
ForJimmy replied to Proudiddy's topic in Carolina Panthers
I feel like Corral’s deep ball issues are overstated. It’s not like he wasn’t capable of throwing a bomb or was way off target. They just didn’t throw it deep very often and when they did he was either on the money or would overthrow (which is what you want, underthrow and get picked). I’ve seen clips of him hitting Moore on deep passes in stride the year before last. It’s just a timing issue and that can easily be coached/developed. I’m really not too worried about him physically except for durability. The big question to me is can he handle the mental side of the game reading defenses, going through progressions etc… -
Considering some of us wanted a trade down and draft Corral in the late/mid first we came out great! We got arguably the best player at a position of need in Icky and quite possibly the top QB in the class with minimal draft capital damage.
-
Hard to tell. If we had a 2nd round pick we very well could have drafted him. Our staff was more hesitant to trade away future picks after the mess we found ourselves in this draft. Third was just too good of a value to pass up...

Teams were comfortable with their FA QBs for the year vs this draft class. The Falcons were ok with Mariotta for the year and the Commanders were ok with Wentz, the Saints with Winston and so on. The only two teams that really needed a QB were us and Seattle and both teams knew Baker and Jimmy G are available if needed. Most years don't have QBs like Baker (average) available for a cheaper price during the draft. That leaves the Seahawks with the option of trading for Baker or Jimmy G. I'm surprised they didn't pull the trigger on a young signal caller....

Is this a new dance move?

IF (and I mean this is a HUGE IF) Corral plays most of the seasons and shows some flashes/progression to look the part of our next franchise guy we could be in a spot to crush a team in a trade next year for a QB in the draft. We definitely need to get a good look at him, but after seeing out staff get Icky with BC getting limited playing time, I am a little more confident that we won't pass on a top talent if Corral is still a question mark.
-
You're right, but I think it's just a timing issue. He didn't attempt to throw a lot of deep balls in that offense (especially after Moore got drafted), so I think it's correctable. As long as it's not a deep zone, overthrows are much safer than under...

Willis is spending too much time in some of your heads. He got drafted by the Titans and I wish him the best unless he is playing us.

Examining the rookie seasons of the 2022 NFL projected QB starters
ForJimmy replied to trueblade's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yeah Burrow was 2-7-1 before he got injured. Rookie years sometimes are just for the development of the QBs. These teams getting the top guys are in no position to make a playoff run, so they let the offense grow/develop with their young QB. The data will probably tell a different story if you look at top 10 drafted rookie QBs (excluding trade ups) record starting their rookie years. Players that fall later to better teams like Mac Jones, Lamar etc are naturally going to have better records. -
Yeah Chuba looked good behind our terrible OL last year. He is going to be a good RB to come in for CMC. We finally got a decent OL for them both to run behind now we just need to limit CMC’s snaps and hopefully he can stay healthy.

Round 3 Pick 94: Panthers Select Matt Corral - QB Ole Miss

Corral dropped because of character concerns. His physical traits are there to become a starter. Grier went in the 3rd because he was physically limited but had good enough character for us to use a 3rd on him. That’s the main difference IMO.
