The great QBs are averaging in the 8s for YPA. Mahomes' career average is 7.9 and that is in Andy Reid's wide open offense. These averages are also including YAC. So throwing a pass that is triple (yeah I am being vague here) your average is considered deep, double is considered medium (remember these are without YAC past the LOS). It just is what it is man. As @Bear Handsstated, Bryce still wasn't good at it last year, so anyone using it to hate on him can continue to do so. It's just hard to change the definition on something that already has one....

Yeah throwing the ball 20 plus yards accurately against NFL defenses is no easy task. That's my biggest take. People on here scoffing at 20 plus yard passes. I mean after the 25 yard touchback, one of those gets you at midfield and another is close to the redzone. It's was definitely a weakness for Bryce last year, even looking at the 20 plus yard range. I do think that this falls on the WR as much at the QB though. The 5 top ones you mentioned had a nice WR core and a nice offensive scheme to use them effectively. Notice how the two biggest arms (Allen and Mahomes) were not in the top group you mentioned. Big arm doesn't always equate to deep passes as much as people think. You have to hit a spot on the field at the right time and have a WR capable of beating his guy, and going out and getting the ball. I think our staff knows this and wanted XL and Sanders (TE) to help address a previous offensive weakness. They may take a minute to get comfortable but I think they were drafted to help with this. Whether it is Bryce or another QB we replace him with we want to have some "deep ball catchers" on this offense.

Love him talking about bettering himself in order to show his leadership. Takes that responsibility of playing better so he can lead better. Pretty vet response there. -

He just could never stay healthy… He was fun to watch when he was. -
OR it’s just stating we aren’t going to practice throwing 50 yards bombs on the regular. Looks like he did throw one to DJ. We are going to zero in on plays that offenses run 90% of the time before we incorporate the less common plays. Just trying to use some logic here…

He isn't the best deep passer by a long shot. Most QBs can get it 20 plus yards accurately though. To me deep passes tend to be more of a WR/scheme stat than a QB stat. Look no further than Tua and Geno (two of the best deep passers last year). They became great deep passers when they got elite WRs. Hill/Waddle helped Tua and going to Seattle with Metcalf/Lockett helped Geno. If you don't have an elite deep pass WR then it's difficult to become a good deep pass QB. It's not like Tua has some rocket for an arm.

Yeah I don’t see many safeties constantly playing 20 plus yards away from the LOS. If you hit a 25 yard pass it’s typically behind the defense unless they are in prevent or something different. 20 plus yards in the air pass the LOS is a deep pass and not as easy as people think on here. People are forgetting YAC is included in a lot of these passes. So when a QB hits a 40 yard pass, more times than not it’s including YAC to get there.
-
You need to look at air time. Dalton’s 40 yarder had a good bit of YAC. It was an open pass and the WR ran 10 plus yards afterwards. Not sure about the other ones mentioned. A check down can become a 40 yarder with enough YAC.

The time needed, scheme needed, and WR needed for a 50 yard pass to be a normal thing is pretty rare. I think sometimes they just launch it up and the elite WR like Hill track it down. It’s an amazing thing no doubt but definitely not a typical deep ball. Think of a deep pass as a 3 pointer and a 50 yard pass as a Curry/Lillard logo 3 pointer.
-
Lol I get it. I think a 50 dime is just a freaking highlight play. It’s like it’s own thing. I mean that’s launching the ball half of the field on the money.
-
I wish they would just let Mingo handle the slot with AT relieving him sometimes. DJ and XL on the outside with Mingo/AT in the slot.

NFL typically considers anything 20 plus in the air past the LOS a deep pass. You have to think these QBs are 5 plus yards behind the LOS on most plays so the ball is typically traveling over a quarter of the field in the air before any YAC happens. Here is the NFL trying to quantify it https://www.nfl.com/news/next-gen-stats-top-10-nfl-deep-passers-of-2022-geno-smith-tua-tagovailoa-excel-a One a side note people talking about Young’s 55 yard pass making Johnson slow down need to realize some HOF QBs max out in the 60s and that’s without accuracy/timing. In the 20 minute mark they do a deep throw challenge with the QBs trying to keep their passes in bound and they have running starts. Manning was 69 and 65 maxed out. Expecting these 50 yards passes like it’s something normal is a bit extreme (I know you weren’t the one doing it).

A deep pass is usually at least 20 yards according to PFF. I mean you are getting into a quarter of the entire field past that. This isn’t including YAC obviously. A deep pass by PFF standards is any pass that is targeted and travels at least 20 yards in the air, past the line of scrimmage. https://www.pff.com/news/pro-pff-signature-statistics-a-glossary#:~:text=A deep pass by PFF,past the line of scrimmage.

I'm not sure how Caldwell kept his job after the offensive offensive showing last year.

It wasn't you I was mocking. You are typically realistic in your critiques. I just like to poke fun at the ones on her who overreact to everything. Earlier in this thread it was stated Bryce still hasn't completed a deep pass in practice so I just decided to dive a little deeper in their definition of a "deep" pass. Apparently it's over 55 yards for a select few on here....
-
So he connected on a Madden Deep Pass? I just read posts on here stating he hasn't connected on a single deep pass and I just wanted to make sure 55 is deep enough. I mean before long we are going to run out of actual turf/grass....
-
Does 55 count as a Madden deep ball??
-
Lol why are we sending AT deep with Horn on him?? He is literally the worst player in our WR group for that route against an elite CB.
-
So we need to practice Hail Mary passes apparently… Yeah a 20 plus pass is a deep pass. I mean if you get the ball at the 25 you are almost at midfield with one of those.
-
Deep passes??? Impossible…

Thanks @Icege for all of the updates!

Yeah I think he gets the whole season to either improve or lead us to his replacement.
