PFF - What would it take for Panthers to trade up for #1 pick
ForJimmy replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
We are using Nick Goings at FB this year since Hoover is gone. -
Panthers met with Hooker per report

Good point, but I think Newton was a much more polished passer coming out than AR. I could be wrong though, it's hard to tell with the system/talent around them. -

True or you could pulls a Buffalo and just have him tough it out while running a simpler offense with designed QB runs. -

Arm strength, core strength, speed, and potential (AR is 4 years younger with only one season as a starter). Hooker also played in a very QB friendly system at UT with a couple NFL WRs around him. In 2020 Hooker was 98/150 with 1339 yards 9 TDs and 5 INTs at VT in a more pro offense against ACC defenses. He did have 620 more rushing yards and 9 TDs while still being older than current AR. I'm not saying Hooker is bad, just SOME scouts are going to see AR as the next Josh Allen (potentially) with his size, speed, and arm strength. His ceiling is through the roof, but there is a definite high bust factor in there as well. -
GM Fitt already said if there is one you like you trade up and get him. Call it "GM speak" if you want, but he is usually pretty straightforward in his interviews. It also makes sense. We have an OL and a defense with several talented young players. You can't be afraid to go up and get your guy in the draft. https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/bears/panthers-ideal-qb-situation-makes-them-trade-target-bears#:~:text=General manager Scott Fitterer clarified,up and go get him. He does say you don't want to back yourself in a corner and go strictly draft, but it's the most cost effective way to do it. Signing Carr and having to move our cap all around to fit his salary doesn't seem cost effective at all.

If he is actually ready for training camp that could make things interesting.... -
Oh I’m not directly it at any particular poster. The person talking about the FO was fine and had sone good points. My post was just a reference to this whole topic/discussion. I don’t see us saving pick 9 and signing Carr. That’s all.
-
This person understands. Hell they have been the only reliable source leaking a little info for us.
-
It just seems like a waste of money to hire these QB whispers on your staff and then drop a ton of money to sign an established vet QB in his 30s? I guess we shall see. I just see us possibly signing a cheap vet like Brisset or even Darnold and drafting a QB. Using that QB rookie salary plus all of our free space next season (assuming we don't use it up) puts us in a great spot to build a solid team. Not to mention Reich issues having a vet QB signed every offseason with the Colts. Who knows at this point?
-
Barno could be deadly if developed properly at edge.
-
Do they have interest or not? I only see articles saying Carolina is "expected" to have interest. If a 37 million dollar (his expected salary) starting QB becomes available, and he is one you really like then you don't really drag your feet in meeting with him. If there is any interest in this point it seems minor, as Frank Reich and Fitt would be at least inquiring about a meeting. Bringing in Caldwell and McCown is a little telling where Reich is leaning with his QB decision and it's currently in the draft. This staff was assembled to help find and develop a young signal caller. Fitt has already said drafting your guy is the best way to do it and also stated if there is one you like you move up and draft him.
-
If there is no urgency they are ok with drafting one. I mean his offensive staff is setup to develop a young QB vs signing a vet.

CJ Stroud's tape is a Pleaseant Surprise
ForJimmy replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think we should trade up to 3 and take whichever remains. It saves us some draft capital and I don't think there is a clear cut number 1 or 2 in this draft. Similar to what the 49ers did a couple years ago with less picks being used. -

Oh I'm just messing with you. I'll be happy if Reich thinks Levis is his guy. It feels nice to actually trust the staff. I could see us getting into the top 3 which guarantees Stroud, Levis, or Young. -
The goofiest cornball coach in the NFL?
ForJimmy replied to WarPanthers89's topic in Carolina Panthers
We need to be nice to him as we might be trading picks with him in the first round. -

This video compares it to Russ Wilson dropping his deep passes into WR’s arms. Called it his “moon ball.” He also compared it to Jared Goff’s which is a solid NFL arm. Levis and AR have the cannon’s if that’s what you like. -

He is the QB we should target IMO. It’s funny I’ve mentioned he can be a Goff to Burrow (obvious best case) and this video compares him to Goff while McCown compared him to Burrow. The pocket issues can be fixed with our staff. He is a smart, accurate thrower who can make all the NFL throws. -
Just because Cam is his daddy, doesn’t make him Chosen.
-
I wouldn’t be against that.
-
That would be my dream scenario. Colts trade up to 1 and draft Young, Texans take Levis, and we can trade up to 3 and get Stroud for much less than jumping up to 1.
-
Price to move into top 3 based on past trades.
ForJimmy replied to panther4life's topic in Carolina Panthers
I don’t think teams are ever 100% sold on a player. I’m just confident in our staff to make the right decision. They should be able to weigh how confident they are in a player vs the cost of acquiring that player. To answer your question though they shouldn’t trade up “just to take one.” -
The Brady thing happening is extremely rare if not once in a generation. The GOAT QB becomes a FA and decides where he wants to play while still playing at an elite level. I’m not interested in trying to replicate that. McVay built his team on trading picks for vets and paying for big time free agents. It’s a solid strategy but very short term. It’s one of the reasons he is flirting with going into broadcasting. He knows his cap is about to be screwed while his team ages out.
