  1. If Payton does want to come here, I agree, I think it will be the Panthers 2nd round pick (39 overall), a 2024 first round pick, and maybe another future mid-round pick with conditions to get it higher (e.g. a conditional 4th round pick that becomes a 3rd round pick if the Panthers make the playoffs in 2024).
  2. What future? We traded for two former top 5 picks that were both young and they both sucked. I damn sure would've rather had a 40-something year old Brady here the past 3 seasons than the poo poo platter of Teddy B, Darnold, and Mayfield.
  3. We could just as easily hire a HC who isn't ready for the role, and use those picks on guys who amount to nothing. For every Steve Smith, Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly, there's a Vernon Butler, Kelvin Benjamin, and Devin Funchess. BTW, I wanted Ben Johnson for this gig and hated the news we requested Payton when Johnson was still a candidate. I'd be happy with Steichen. Honestly I'd be happy with anyone other than Wilks. I don't care how we get there.
  4. Why? If Payton is hired as the coach there's a 99% chance that one of those three would be brought in as QB over any of the options currently on the roster.
  5. Nothing is guaranteed. We're all dealing in hypotheticals. We could hire Steichen and go 9-25 over the next two seasons and he'd be fired as well.
  6. We'll see if it really does take two first round picks. And unfortunately, for better or worse, it doesn't matter what you or I think are non-starters.
  7. I feel fine about it. It's not like they've really done anything here to make me think they're not expendable for the right guy.
  8. I ultimately don't think it's going to take two firsts, but even if it does, you're not hiring Payton with the intention of drafting a top 10 QB. I think you're bringing in a guy like Brady, Carr, Garoppolo, or swinging for the fences for someone like Lamar Jackson.
  9. Holmgren and he made it back to the Super Bowl with Seattle. But in any case, I don't particularly think it's relevant given the sample size is small as hell, there's only been 7 coach trades in the league's entire history. Look, I get it, you don't want Payton and think it would be a bad hire no matter what. I don't think the "no coach has won a SB with two different teams" thing is as much of a smoking gun as you make it out to be given the sample sizes aren't that big to begin with. It'll happen eventually.
  10. If you look at this in the lens of not retread coaches that were hired off the street, but specifically coaches that were traded, it looks a lot better: Don Shula (1970): traded from Baltimore Colts to Miami Dolphins for a first round pick 71-23 record with Colts 257-133-2 record with Dolphins, two SB wins Bill Parcells (1997): traded from Patriots to Jets for a first, second, third, and fourth 32-32 record with Patriots 29-19 record with Jets, one AFC championship game appearance Mike Holmgren (1999): traded from Packers to Seahawks for a second round pick 75-37 record with Packers, one SB win 86-74 record with Seahawks, one NFC Championship, one SB appearance Bill Belichick (2000): traded from Jets to Patriots for a first, fourth, fifth, and seventh (got back a fifth and a seventh as well, I believe) Never actually coached a game with the Jets, but 36-44 as Cleveland HC 262-108 record with Patriots, six SB wins, nine AFC championships Jon Gruden (2002): traded from Raiders to Bucs for a two firsts, two seconds, and $8m in cash 38-26 record with Raiders, one AFC championship game appearance 57-55 record with Bucs, one SB win Herm Edwards (2006): traded from Jets to Chiefs for a fourth round pick 39-41 record with Jets 15-33 record with Chiefs Bruce Arians (2019): traded from Cardinals to Bucs for a pick swap (Arians and a 7th for a 6th) 49-30-1 record with Cardinals, one NFC championship game appearance 31-18 record, one SB win So basically, pretty much every coach trade ended up being successful for the acquiring team except for the Herm Edwards trade (which looking back on, was bizarre and, prior to Arians trade, netted the least compensation).
  11. I would honestly take either of Caldwell or Reich over Wilks. I think Caldwell gets a bad rap. Yes, he had Manning when he was HC of the Colts, but if you take out the Manning neck injury year where the owner mandated the tank for Luck (they started a washed up Kerry Collins and Curtis Painter the entire year), he's got a 60-36 record (.625 win %). He went 36-28 with the Detroit Lions - the Lions have had 10 HCs over the past 20 years and he's the only one with a career win % over .500.
  12. Do you prefer Reich over Payton because he'd be "free" rather than costing draft assets? Not sure why Reich is preferred to Payton if based purely on coaching acumen. I definitely think Payton is a better coach.
  13. I mean every HC hire ends up being the best sales pitch. McVay was the best sales pitch for the Rams, Taylor was the best sales pitch for the Bengals, etc. I'm not wild about sending compensation out for Payton, but it's no more of a long shot than Steichen giving his best sales pitch as the next McVay or Wilks giving his best sales pitch of being the best of Rivera without all the bad parts.
  14. Don't think he's any more limited in his throws than Jimmy. Let's not act like Jimmy is a dynamic QB that can extend plays and throw it deep either.
  15. Sean Payton has a second interview scheduled for later this week with the Broncos. Sure looks like they're the favorite.
  16. I think Purdy is as good as, if not better, than Jimmy G tbh
  17. Not to mention the Commanders only hit the 30 point mark because of a return of a fumbled lateral with 5 seconds left when the Eagles were down 26-21.
  18. Reposting from coaching search thread:
  19. Side note: McDermott's 4th down play calling in this game is another indictment against defensive head coaches. Just doesn't understand the flow of this game - the Bengals offense is strafing the Bills D and you're gonna need to put up points to get this to OT. Cowardly punts just like Wilks vs Tampa Bay.
  20. Would like to see Brian Callahan get a look, Bengals offense has been cooking under him.
  21. Don’t think so. All of the young OC interviews would’ve been virtual, and I’m sure they’re gonna narrow down their options and bring in a few for in-person second round interviews. That said, I think the next HC is going to be either Steichen, Payton, or Wilks.
  22. If the Panthers want to interview Steichen in person, yes. Won’t be able to do so until after 1/30.
  23. It's related to the dates that you can speak to coaches currently in the playoffs: Basically, if the Giants, Cowboys, and Bills advance this weekend, we will not be able to conduct an interview with Kafka, Moore, and Dorsey until after the conference championship games. And if 2 of those 3 teams make it to the Super Bowl (e.g. Cowboys/Bills), we wouldn't be able to interview them until after the SB because you can only conduct second interviews (not initial) with candidates who previously interviewed during the week between the conf champ games and the SB. So I guess root for the Eagles, 49ers, and Bengals if you want one of Kafka/Moore/Dorsey to be the HC, because I don't see Tepper waiting past 2/12 to hire a HC unless it's Steichen
  24. I'm starting to think one of Steichen or Kafka is going to end up being the next Panthers HC. If you wanted Reich, Wilks, or Caldwell, you could've made that move by now. I think Payton is using Tepper purely for leverage purposes at this point, and even if he did want to come to Carolina, it sounds like the Saints are going to make it cost prohibitive to do so. Feels like Payton doesn't mind ending up in Denver or waiting another year when there's more openings.
