It looks bad but it’s just a one year thing and the Panthers can open up ~$25m in cap space by, as states, cutting/trading Robbie and one of Shaq or Donte (personally I wouldn’t be surprised if Donte is moved at the deadline to a CB-needy contender like Rams, Chiefs, or Bills). Even more cap space can be opened by signing Burns to an extension and lowering next year’s $16m cap hit. If the Panthers end the season with a top 3 pick, no brainer to take a QB and maybe sign a cheap stop gap vet to back him up. That’ll allow Carolina to make some shrewd moves in FA and then 2024 moving forward is a fairly clean cap sheet.

I agree with the Athletic on the names they mention. Trade Robbie to any number of WR-needy teams for whatever you can get (Packers, Giants, Chiefs, Ravens come to mind). Trade Donte to a contender that needs back-end help. Everyone mentions CMC to the Bills, but I think Donte to the Bills makes just as much sense - he's been around McDermott and the Bills have a rash of injuries in the secondary. Wilks needs to throw CJ into the fire and let's see what we have with him. He's looked ok if he can clean up the DPIs, but that seems to be a big issue. Trading away these two players brings 2023 cap space to ~$25m.

I'd probably look to take a swing at someone like Anthony Richardson if he comes out, but wouldn't be surprised if they went for a WR (given DJ's the only proven option on the roster next season at the moment) and maybe target someone like a Hendon Hooker, Grayson McCall, or Cam Ward in the 2nd round.

Couple of quibbles here: DeMeco Ryans is in his 2nd year as 49ers DC. While I wouldn't be thrilled Dan Quinn, I'm not sure I'd say he "wasn't very good" the first time. He was 46-44 with Atlanta, obviously they had the 28-3 Super Bowl meltdown (I might put that more on Kyle Shanahan than Quinn), but he also had the Falcons back in the playoffs the year after and they were a few yards away from going back to the NFC Championship game.

Take whatever you can get for Robbie and move on. He's not going to be on the team one way or another after this season, so might as well get something rather than just cut him for nothing.

It just makes no sense to trade CMC. At least with Robbie, while you're taking a $19m dead money hit this year, it frees up $12m in cap space next year. With CMC, trading him will result in a $26m dead money hit this year and a $18m dead money hit next year while only freeing up $1.2m in cap space next year. Unless someone is willing to blow the organization away with an amazing offer (at least a first round pick minimum), I think Fitt/Tepp will be content to hang on to him and have the new HC, whoever that may be, make the decision on whether or not he wants to deal him at next year's deadline.

I'd add Shane Waldron, OC, Seahawks to the first timers offense list. Comes from the McVay coaching tree and what he's done with Geno and the Seahawks offense this year is super impressive.
