Teams are like Companies--if the CEO is the problem, he is going to fire everyone around him until there is nobody left.
-
that is what I said--researching RTs. I did not know the team was meeting with RTs. If you hear who, that may give us an idea what round.

I think so. I was watching the graphics with the sound off. Turned it up and they said Washington had $80m in cap room, so I assume they were talking about taking on his salary--that would make sense considering the low trade value
-
Ha. I plead the fifth. That is a pretty big trade.
-
Debo Samuel traded to Washington for a fifth.

No, and I don't talk to this person frequently. I have the same curiosity--let me see what s/he knows--but it could be a while. I feel this person does not like people asking for insider info--but that could be me. S/he has never said a word about it.

I think he was an older rookie, which means he is pushing 30 right now. Probably a valuable backup, but if you need for a long stretch, bryce is in trouble.

I do not know circumstances, but I am pretty sure that BC did not cut it at LG and he sucked at center when Cade took over and played well. I have always thought his role would be as a swing OT. His arms are short, but he really has not spent time at T, his college position. So I am not sure how valuable he is if he has not played well at G or C.

David Newton getting too close to our players?
MHS831 replied to WarPanthers89's topic in Carolina Panthers
Today's headlines: Young might want to get that mole on his back removed. Looks like a basil cell. Robert Hunt has switched over to Arm and Hammer body powder from Gold Bond. Questionable move. Upset that Zavala took his Right Guard deodorant when he was injured last week. It seems that Legette caught a hoof fungus from Dolla Bill. Those toes are clappin! Ickey making that Ninjja Turtles towel look like a loin cloth. -
It will be interesting to see if he draws interest.

I do not know to what degree the positions are different now, but I watched or read something that was very interesting. If you think about the best pass rushers in the NFL now, most play on the defensive left side. Crosby, Watt, Garrett, Bosa, to name a few. Watt said that even though he is not rushing the blind side, the ball is closer to him and he can strip it easier. Regardless, the top edge rushers in the NFL attack the RT, so there is the beginning of a shift to put more emphasis on the RT. Here is an article from 2023 that describes it. https://www.hogshaven.com/2023/4/16/23681579/have-right-tackles-become-just-as-important-as-left-tackles-in-the-nfl

I wonder. If the Eagles have proven anything, it is long-term approaches to the trenches can pay off. It sounded to me that they are going with Moton, but he is a question mark to some degree. What do we have behind Moton? If our season hangs on Moton's knee, then it could sway priorities. I think people think of the draft incorrectly--we look at it to fill immediate needs, when only 2 or 3 players drafted start during the rookie season (on average). They develop on the run. We give 4-year contracts to address current needs, and that is fine, but going after immediate needs can cause you to leave BPA on the table. I do think we draft a T and I would assume Moton's knee would indicate when.

This person is one of many who cover the Panthers and it seems they are very tight lipped right now. I wonder if it is based on Legette announcing to the world last year that the Panthers told him they were going to draft him--then we move up to get him---That is kinda embarrassing. As much as Moton's contract is going to hurt, it is the right play. I was wondering if he was done (and they have not announced it) or if they might be trying to trade him before it becomes a bigger issue. I left with the feeling that he is not done and there is no talk of trading him or extending him. S/he did say that they are going to watch him for a year before making a decision. If that is the case, I am like you--he is not going to heal at 32 and 330 lbs. This is his last season in Carolina, based on my interpretation of the conversation.
-
I did. He simply said s/he had no knowlege of it. Said he had the injury in camp and sat for a few days--then said there was an announcement that he had foot surgery and nobody knows if it is related to the camp injury or not. This person should know, but didn't. The source is a journalist friend of mine but seemed a bit frustrated that the details have not been released (at least s/he did not have the details at the time).

I don't let isolated cases determine present or future decisions, but Sanders benefited from that OL for sure--I said it LOUDLY at the time of the STUPID signing. However, he would have Derrick Brown here at one DE and he would be the other, sending Robinson to a reserve role. Signing him would still necessitate the need for a NT, but if we prioritize that, The DL would be pretty impressive here. At 25, his salary is projected to be $15-20m. We get a young, experienced, successful DT with a 70 PFF rating at a cost less than our guards cost us last year--each. I see that Morgan has identified IDL as the biggest need on the team, so if last season was any indicator, he will throw money at DL early. The Eagles probably can't re-sign Williams, so he is going to be one of the most desirable free agent DLinemen. I think Morgan will address DE or NT and S in free agency as priorities. Not saying you are wrong, just saying that 1. I think Williams would not feel much of a drop off with Brown and stud NT. and 2. Expect Morgan to splash at S and DL. Let's see how it turns out--but if Williams' demands are too high, you might be right.

As much as they try to involve SC--playing at Clemson early on, camp in Rock Hill or Spartanburg--tying to build practice facilities in Fort Mill--they just don't embrace this team (I know some Cowboy and Washington fans in SC, but they are dying out
-
Lotta folks would not take a S in round 1. I like him though. And homer? I was born in the spring after my father caught 35 passes for the Gamecocks. Now we have Clowney, Wonnum, XL---I think Clemson fans are leaving the fan base because of this trend.

All I can say is "per source" because I was told some information (not "Breaking News" Juan) from someone close to the situation that I do not think is confidential, but I think the person did not want his/her name affiliated with it because it was slightly opinionated or speculative at times. I do not want to say anything to misrepresent what was discussed and I will not quote them or mention an opinion they shared--only how what they shared impacted my thinking. As I said, most is common knowledge about which I figured there was more to it that we knew already. That was not necessarily the case. Xavier Legette--Legette never said he was going to have surgery on his wrist at the end of the season; he said that he might have to have surgery. He also stated that he had been concerned with the wrist since 2021, if you recall. Apparently, there was no issue that requires surgery, based on my interpretation of the fact that he said "might" and never had the surgery. As for the foot, if you recall Legette missed a few days with a foot injury during camp and we never heard another word about it. Was the reason for his surgery based on that injury? There is no information to suggest that these two injuries are related. The cause of the foot injury remains a mystery, but the wrist mystery seems to be solved. Taylor Moton--Moton missed games this year due to a knee that has been giving him trouble for some time. At his age, there are several reasons they may not extend him. It is likely that the Panthers want to see how he does for a season before making a decision on Moton, but at his age, it seems (to me) to be unlikely that he will get a third contract with the Panthers unless his knee fully recovers. It is probable that they will address depth at T, possibly to groom a RT for 2026. I am going to start looking at right tackles in the draft and free agency, but most likely, the draft. Probably day 3, but the reason I inquired about Moton is based on an expectation that OTs could be available at #8 and if his knee is shot, RT becomes your new priority. I did not get that vibe--instead, the feeling I got was that the Panthers will probably not extend Moton and opt to take a "wait and see" approach. If my thinking is correct, Moton's $31m cap hit will be absorbed in 2025. In 2026 Moton is a free agent, and I do not see them re-signing him despite still having $4.8m cap hit. It would be smart, with 9 picks (6 on day 3) to sign a RT or draft a raw RT to groom for a season. It is my impression, based on the facts, that Moton is entering his final year as a Panther unless his knee improves. Still, the articles I have read describe the average NFL linemen start declining at 32. Moton will be 32. I also know that lingering knee issues in big men at his age are more likely to be based on the wear and tear over the years than something that will heal. About Legette again--why tell the press that you might have to have surgery? It seems to me that he is possibly making excuses. Dawgs don't make excuses. To me, telling the press about non-serious injuries is not something the best do. In January, everyone is banged up. Summary: Legette will not be having wrist surgery. No idea why he had foot surgery. Moton is probably in his last year and the Panthers will likely watch the knee and postpone making any decisions about 2026 or beyond.

Interesting take and I do not doubt it a bit--but it relies on a coach that uses that versatility correctly. During the interview, Jalon mentioned his versatility and how it kept the defense honest. He knows his value. I think he could be a great player, and I think if he is used incorrectly, he could be an average player. This is sorta the dilemma teams are having with Travis Hunter. If you draft him in the top 5, and that is where he should go, are you getting the best CB? Are you getting the best WR? So to get his full value, do you have to play him both ways? If a team picks him and they do not allow him to use both talents, they might be over drafting him. Jalon as an edge is not a first rounder. As a versatile weapon that can create confusion and matchup issues, he is. If I were the GM, I would sit down with the head coach, DC, and LB coach to see the plan for him. .

We had a thread to predict who the Panthers would draft that year. I was one of the few who picked Davis and I said with my pick, "they will move him to LB." I say this because it may be the only time I have ever been right about the pick...and I dont want anyone to forget it!
-
He was just exaggerating and joking I think--suggesting that I thought Tremble and Thomas are better--I was not comparing talent--I was comparing moves the team is making. Frankly, if we are going to add a TE, I really like Taylor from LSU. He is smooth and can play. Won't cost us a first rounder either.

OK, so this is a bit weird. When I coached at Salisbury High School when I first started teaching, I used to go over to Catawba College to watch film and talk football with their coaches. They were great. Curtis, Jalon's father, I assume, was a LB at Catawba and hired as LB coach by Bennett When Coastal started their program, they hired Catawba's coach Bennett. Bennett must have taken Jalen's father with him to Coastal. I am guessing that is about the time Jalon was born and why he was in Conway. So then his father comes back to Salisbury after Jalen is born and takes the head coaching job. Jalen is a good interview. I love the kid based on this, and I have heard good things from former colleagues of FB. Salibury (when I was there) was a very rough school. Gangs, drugs, etc. To put it in perspective, I was there for 2.5 years and I had four (4) students in my class (at different times) who committed murder during that time. A girl was raped in the gym by a few boys. One night, after a game (there is a road between the coaches offices in the gym and the rest of the school) the coaches watched film until 1 AM or so. When we were leaving to walk to our cars parked across that street, we noticed a car sitting in the middle of the road about 100 yards away with its lights off. The driver took off when we neared the street, so we all hit the ground. As the car passed, we heard about 6 or 7 gunshots. The next day, the van behind where we fell to the ground had 2 bullet holes in it, about 5 feet above the ground. All that to say this: If the young man on the video endured anything like that, I want him to succeed and I found it interesting that he mentioned playing for the Panthers. I am not sold on the player as a fit here based on our needs, but I am sold on the person. Very proud of him for some reason that many may not understand.

That was my first thought. Show your facilities, processes, etc. Free commercial. How many players might transfer seeking publicity now? He might get 2-3 new transfers. High schoolers get their first peek into a program to see what it is like, and if they like it, they will want to go there. The players become famous and when you are recruited, they greet you or they partner with you for the weekend. The recruits already know them...little things make a huge difference.
-
Thank God you are not the Gold Standard around here. I don't come here to respect players, nor disrespect them. I think some Huddlers think every statement is a personal opinion because that is lazy, basic thinking. but to predict what they might do requires another level of comprehension. I tend to look for signs that might predict future moves--like not extending Moton, for example. It could mean we are going to trade him, or not give him another contract....Does not mean I think we should do either.

You need to use smaller words. We cannot read those long posts with those long words. do you un-der-stand?
