  1. Did you not see the net-front on the PP goal to get the Canes on the board? Did you not see the work, shot, retrieval, shot, rebound that got Slavin's goal? Both of those are on Svech, and I don't think he got credit for an assist for either. But those goals were as much his as Turbo's or Slavin's.
  2. Not a UNC fan, so I looked it up because I'd always heard Smith wouldn't turn Jordan loose and preached and coached "team first."
  3. Michael Jordan averaged 17.7 points per game at UNC because that's how Dean Smith built the team. A team built with guys who all scored in the double digits, which meant they were putting up 77 per game. Put a McDavid on the Canes and he'll get his 50+, but Aho and Svech will be reduced to 15-20 each instead of their combined 66 and this team is nowhere close to the +69 in goals scored. No way I'm trading the current lineup for a 50+ goal scorer.
  4. Saying Svech hasn't improved isn't paying attention: And a couple other thoughts- a +19 when he still does occasionally take the dumb penalty is pretty fugging good.
  5. Just stop. Any team that has the 50-goal guy has no one else around him because you can't keep a 50-goal scorer and a 35 or 40-goal guy on the same roster. There's a hard cap- no team can afford to keep 'em. Toronto: Matthews (58), Marner (34) and Tavares (26) are 40% of the team's cap. And who else they got scoring? Nylander has 36, but throw in his salary and you have 50% of the team's salary on 4 guys. Washington: Ovi-Putin (58), Wilson (24) and Kuznetsov (24) make up 28% of the Caps salary and the 3 guys on Toronto I mentioned above? They all make more than Ovi-Putin. But the Caps scoring is very consistent down the roster behind Ovi-Putin with 7 players other than the 3 I mentioned in double-digit goals. Tampa Bay has Stamkos (34), Point (27), Kucherov (20), Killorn (25) and Colton (21). And all of those guys are centers, while Kucherov plays on the wing. I'll take that distribution of scoring all day long over a 50+ and a handful of high teens goal scorers. A team can build 3 solid scoring lines with numbers like those because behind those 5 guys are 4 more double-digit scorers. And they're not killing their cap with those guys. And let's not forget another telling sign- the Canes are a +69 in goals scored (#5) and have given up a league best 190.
  6. Unlike the NFL, where every game matters, the NHL schedule allows for the occasional lapse in performance without it killing your chances of a playoff spot. There's a reason it's called the second season. Another thing to consider is scheduling this season and how the league really didn't do the Canes any favors. There was a 12 day stretch over the Christmas holidays when the Canes had 4 games (Preds, Bruins, Sens and Panthers) postponed due to COVID. So, while the rest of the league lost their Olympic time off because the US decided not to send NHL players, the Canes got screwed when the league rescheduled those missed games and stacked up 3 back-to-back game sets in a 6 week period. How many times in the last month have you heard, "4 games in 6 days?" Given the fact there's no break between the end of the season and the playoffs, the Canes aren't getting more than a couple days off at any time going forward, unless they sweep someone in a playoff series and can wait a few days for an opponent.
  7. It's beginning to sound a lot like the Panthers forum in here.
  8. A lot of North Carolinians don't give a sh*t about the Panthers, either.
  9. "Threatening" to kill her? See, if she'd actually been murdered and he was somehow involved, he could be headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the future and Ray Lewis would be inducting him...
  10. As I said on the first page of this thread yesterday afternoon, the Canes will need to score 4 to win games. But, let's not kid ourselves, the 3 scores by Arizona last night were the result of lazy defensive efforts and bad turnovers. They were all uncontested snipes, 2 of them from inside 20 feet. Ritchie's shot was a missile from dead in the middle with no one close to defend. The 2nd period was a lackluster defensive effort. Glad they came back and stood tall in the 3rd, but this was a game the Canes were supposed to win, and it should not have been that close.
  11. Go up 3 goals and get lazy, that's what happened.
  12. What the f***! Coyotes scoring with no opposition. These guys are taking clean, uncontested shots and scoring.
  13. Raanta has a good game going, then he just stands there and gets beat. Gotta go out and take the time and distance away.
  14. Nino! Domi with the assist, Nino squares it with his skate and blisters it.
  15. https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/2341123/andersens-injury-to-be-re-evaluated-in-a-week Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen will be re-evaluated in a week for the injury he sustained in Saturday's loss to the Colorado Avalanche, head coach Rod Brind'Amour said Monday, according to Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer. Andersen was helped off the ice late in the third period after an awkward-looking fall. He'll undergo an MRI, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, but no details have emerged about the injury. Antti Raanta will start Monday's game against the Arizona Coyotes. Pyotr Kochetkov was recalled from the AHL on Sunday. Andersen had been sensational this season, cementing himself in the Vezina Trophy conversation with a 35-14-3 record, four shutouts, and a .922 save percentage. The Hurricanes are currently tied with the New York Rangers atop the Metropolitan Division with 104 points and six games remaining.
  16. Yep, have yet to see Domi grinding below the dots, but I do like Domi in the middle. He's an exceptional passer and I think Nino and Quickie might have a couple more goals each with a good distributor of the puck.
  17. MM is beginning to grow on me. Now that I've heard the garbage that is ESPN+, I appreciate the homer guys. And Tripp will tell you if the call was right or not- gotta respect that.
  18. We're closing on the sale of my wife's parents' home in Ocean Isle Beach this week. Fortunately, the buyers wanted a very long escrow and paid us a healthy due diligence fee to sit for nearly 2 months, but they were lucky to lock in at a hair over 3%. We paid cash for new construction/custom in 2008 right after the bubble burst, found a builder desperate for work and made well over double our cost from 14 years ago- all free and clear.
  19. We were taking the elevator up to the restaurant before the Detroit game and Tripp got on with us. I had to give him kudos for the U2 reference he made about "desire" during the Ranger game. But seriously, how does a guy who looks to be all of about 5'4" play goalie?
  20. I don't need confidence- the team does, though. And the only way to get that back is to play well and win some games. Even if they lose and play well, the confidence is boosted, although not as much. The ultimate goal is the Cup, and the playoffs are more important than the next 6 games, but the next 6 games are the confidence builders.
  21. Raanta is starting tonite. I'm hoping he steps up big time knowing this is his opportunity to shine as the season comes to a close. Pyotr will probably start either the Saturday game again st the Devils or the Sunday game against the Islanders because of the back-to-back. Raanta will then start against the Rangers and probably Pyotr the last game of the season at home against the Devils, depending on what the standings and playoff seedings look like. If, for some reason, the NY Rangers don't run away with the Metro and both the division and a higher seed are at stake the last game of the season, then Raanta will start. In the meantime, Carolina needs to put up 4 goals a game to win, because they've had a serious defensive lapse here lately.
  22. There are a lot of teams who will use 3, and sometimes, 4 goalies going thru the playoffs. Anderson is likely done for the season and, maybe, some of the playoffs. 4/18: @ Arizona 4/21: Winnipeg 4/23: @ NJ Devils 4/24: @ NY Islanders 4/26: @ Rangers 4/28: NJ Devils As the Canes are playing right now, this is a 3-3 end of the season. Any other circumstance, it's a 5-1 or 4-2 finish, but I don't think the Canes can beat the Rangers in NY again, the Islanders are a tough out and the Jets are a team looking to build momentum for next season. The Canes will definitely be limping into the playoffs and may fall to a 3 or 4 seed in the Eastern Conference before it's over.
  23. Jordo made a pass and Makar gave him a viscious shoulder that rode up and Staal's head snapped back a little. Legal hit, yes, but it was a little high and got some of Staal's chin and head as well. He was on his knees for a bit and got to the bench, but when in the defense side door and straight down the tunnel. Anderson caught an edge going into a butterfly and probably did some knee or ankle damage.
  24. I was on the top row of 106, so all that was right down below us. Detroit played their defense inside the dots and the Canes rarely got any net front. It allowed them to have ridiculous offensive zone time, which resulted in 45 shots or whatever crazy number it was. Problem is, there was nobody between the shooter and Ned, so they were fairly routine saves- something Raanta couldn't manage. The first goal, which was weak as hell, Slavin took the guy with the puck down low and nobody covered his back with the trailer. Carolina's offense was there, they just got nothing in the net. The first half of the game they were getting physically manhandled by Detroit and didn't really get anything going until late second. As I said in my pre-game post yesterday- Detroit gives the Canes fits...
