DaCityKats mock draft 2014 v.2.0

here is my first mock this year from Feb.

my second stab at what i would like to see occur.

1st round

1388963706000-20-IUMISSFB092113.jpg

Cody Latimer, WR Indiana

Huge 6'3 215 WR who has the potential to be that #1 WR on the next level. has legit deep speed, running a 4.39 on top of showcasing major hops with a 39 in vertical. tough as hell, guy was a gunner(head hunter) on the kickoff team. how many other WRs have done that? can attack the ball at it high point, can box out defenders in small areas, can catch with guys drapped on him, and can get off the press with size/speed. from Dayton, Ohio.

2nd round

Virginia-Cavaliers-Morgan-Moses.jpg

Morgan Moses, OT Virgina

Surprise. Huge body, 6'6 315. fits the bill as BPA on the board, so this is a gimme. technique is not the best, likes to bend at the waist, but Gettleman has said LT do not need to have elite feet. this guy could get the job done based on sheer size alone. long vine arms, and should compete at LT very early in his career. did handle some pretty good speed rushers in Vic Beasley and Jeremiah Attouch last year. from Richmond, VA

3rd round

20130907__paul-richardson~p1.jpg

Paul Richardson, WR Colorado

cannot teach speed. this guy is one of the best vertical threats in the draft, and again him being on the board in the late 3rd could very well be BPA. has decent height at 6'0 close to 6'1, but is very skinny. heard he was weighing in at workouts at 180, up from 175 he weighed in at the combine. can get beat up some by physical DBs, and has a previous knee injury which causes him to slide to the 3rd. has to get stronger, and more physical to be successful, but i think he can. played on the same HS team as Robert Woods, and Marqise Lee. has NFL bloodlines, dad was also a WR. from LA, Cali.

4th round

ross-cockrell.jpg

Ross Cockrell, CB Duke

this guy will compete vs anybody. great in zone coverage, and has a knack for being around the ball. is at best reading the QB, but does have the ability and athleticism to play man. smart guy(played at Duke), and very technique sound. i think he is a guy that will have a long, decent career had over 50 passes defended and 12 ints. 6'0 191 and he is a local guy from Waxhaw, NC.

5th round

1231FB078_t607.JPG

Brandon Thomas, OT/OG Clemson

could compete at OT, or OG once healthy from ACL tear. great value in the 5th, fits BPA model. he can be stashed on IR until he is healthy. long arms on a 6'3 315 body. has good feet, and can play inside at OG or outside at OT. was graded by most as a late 1st-2nd round guy before the injury. another local guy from Spartanburg, SC

6th round

11685502-large.jpg

Nickoe Whitley, S Mississippi St

Love the attitude this guy plays with. a ball hawking safety that will also strike you when you enter his zone. tough as hell, played most of all last season with a torn ACL, but opted for surgery after the season because he didnt want quit on the team. 6'0 205 and is already running on that knee. with the signing of Decoud and Godfrey return, he could be brought along slowly. finished with 15 ints and 15 pass defensed.

7th round

wkyj3cyxyrfwklbu.jpg

Carlos Fields, LB WSSU

athletic LB who can play every LB spot. would excel at WLB or strong because of speed and strength. ran a 4.4 at his pro-day, and said Carolina has showed a lot of interest. 2x CIAA player of the year, and this guy jumps off the screen with his play-making ability and speed. 6'1 238 looked like a man playing among boys when at WSSU. they guy made plays all over the field when i attended games, like Will Hayes (Rams DE). great sleeper pick, and will contribute on special teams. another local guy from Henderson, NC.

Dare to dream - this would be an excellent draft. Not sure whether Moses will last that long but he would be incredible value for us at 60. Love the sixth and seventh round pick. 15 INTs? Sold.

out of Cyrus, Bitonio, Fleming, Richardson, James, Turner and Moses, one of those could be there.

moses will be gone..Thomas is out for the year,

latimer is interesting but still risky prospect because of the sudden rise.

Richardson is decent...could be a Jackson/Hilton  type of guy.

overall good draft...don't know much about the later dudes but I trust you dk.

no guarantee that Moses will be gone. Thomas could get the Kugbila treatment, IR for a year until he is healthy enough to compete. he has twice the talent that Edmund has, and well worth the shelve for a year.

Latimer rise was strictly because he did not get the chance to showcase his athleticism at the combine. once he had his pro day, it confirmed those numbers he displayed then.

Richardson is a decent deep threat guy, but has to get stronger.

Cockrell, Whitley, and Fields can all contribute to special teams, and possibly start at their respected positions, with Fields being the long shot because of the depth at LB.

This would be a hell of a draft. Picks 1-3 are perfect, and I even like us taking a chance on Brandon Thomas.  I hate to say this, I really do, but I would love picking up Fields in the 7th. It would be tough to root for a Ram lol

    • You may be interested to know that the average depth of separation is dependent upon the type of route run. Though go-routes are the most type of route run, they also produce the least amount of separation (and, of course, completions).   "The average pass catcher runs a go route on nearly a quarter of all routes (22.3%), the highest percentage of any route type in our data. However, those routes are targeted roughly 1 out of 10 times (10.8 percent), the lowest target rate of any route. The WR screen is the least-run route (3.4%), and it's the only route where the average target is behind the line of scrimmage. But it's also targeted at the highest rate (40.7%) and early in the play (1.6 seconds average time to throw). The most targeted routes outside of the WR Screen? The out (27.8%) and slant (25.2%) routes are the next most popular across the league."     "The most valuable routes by expected points added per target were the post (+0.48) and corner (+0.43) routes. The go route (+0.19) ranked seventh on the list of 10 route types. The go route (+0.19) ranked seventh on the list of 10 route types. One possible reason for this: It's harder to separate on go routes, which put the player on a straight path, than on posts or corners, which ask the player to make a cut. Targeted pass catchers on posts and corners average 2.4 yards and 2.3 yards of separation from the nearest defender, respectively, while pass catchers targeted on go routes average just 1.8 yards of separation."   https://www.nfl.com/news/next-gen-stats-intro-to-new-route-recognition-model#:~:text=Targeted pass catchers on posts,) and slant (+0.26).   I would expect that Thielen would have an easier time catching the ball based that he runs the routes where it's easier to get open. Tet? Yet to be seen, but we may be better served getting him on some slants and crossers also.  In general, receivers are going to average a lower completion percentage and yards of separation on certain types of routes than others, that's why we shouldn't necessarily be taking stats, even advanced ones, at face value, as there are dynamics that most aren't even thinking about.  In terms of Tet, he's bigger and somewhat slower than a smaller dude, so you'd expect him not to have as much separation on go-routes, but his catch radius is massive and his hands are awesome. Hitting him in stride will probably be killer, but of course QBs are less accurate on go-routes according to the stats. Depending upon Tet's route versatility and how he is used, we could have a unicorn though. He's relatively fast, has great hands and gets YAC (and on an off note, if X can hold on to the ball, he's dangerous as well because he already has shown some separation ability).
    • Most elite WRs aren't necessarily burners. Not a lot of elite WRs in the modern era were 4.3 guys. If anything, sometimes it seems like the super fast guys use their speed as a crutch and it hampers their development in the intricacies of route running.
