Cotchery on Mac Attack

Having watched Smitty humiliate Dwayne Jarrett at OTAs twice during DJ's rookie season--getting into his face and yelling at him so loud I could hear every word from outside the fence 50 yards away--I believe that Gettlemen saw him as toxic.

I LOVE the fact that Gettlemen never apologized for the Smitty comments.  Smitty was a stud on the field, but like some NBA players, he may have good stats and numbers, but the players around him were not better--I think they were worse.

Smitty supposedly has already been fighting his Baltimore teammates.

I am not going to apologize for calling a duck a duck.  There is a good chance Smitty was cancer at the WR positions--to agree with me, you have to look past X-Clown and all of his heroics and look at his possible impact on others--other WRs and Cam.  I think we are better at WR and that everyone will be singing Gettlemen's praises about gutting the underperforming, now overpaid WR corps of 2013.

I mean, I still feel like its their job not Smitty's to make themselves better. Tough choice to use DJ as an example. He looked lazy and acted like it. Missed assignments, missed routes, I mean, What's Smitty supposed to do other than say "Get your poo together rookie".

My perspective is changing as Im getting older. I caught some dude breaking into my car last year. I ran him down, wrestled his ass to the ground. I was fighting to hold him down for 15 minutes until the cops showed up and every 15 seconds I was yelling for help (at 10pm). . . nobody ever came. . no one is ever going to come. . . its all on you.

I see that, but we brought in 19 quality WRs after Smitty was drafted, and NONE prospered here.  12 or so were rookies.  OK, I am 21 years old and I just landed a high-pressure job with one of the top 32 corporations in the world.  From day one, I am getting screamed at and ridiculed by a solid, well-known veteran.  I am weeks out of college.  The playbook, normal hazing, having money for the first time, etc.  Everything is new to me.

These are kids.  Yes, they should perform, but this game is about confidence and swag--if your own teammates rip it from you as you are unpacking, it is hard to get it back.  I think that could be part of it.  I am just reaching for an explanation here, but logic tells you that 6-8 WRs would have developed here.  Zero.

I do see your point and have said it myself.  But there is something fishy about what we know about Smitty and the success of every WR brought in since he was drafted.  I know it is not popular to say this, but rookies are 2 years removed from being a teenager and Smitty is ruthless.  It wears you down after a while.  Did Smitty see it as his job to develop young talent?  No, he called them "competition."  Head games.

Name one who has lived up to expectations.  I can't.  (Moose was here before Smitty--heck, even the free agents underperformed here).

I am one who would have had your back.  That sucks.  I had a huge guy pinned to a fence when I threw him off another small guy while his 2 friends kept beating and kicking the small guy as others watched.  They small guy nearly died.

I understand that frustration.

What I saw of Smitty's antics he was excessive.  He humiliated Jarrett for 2 hours.  Yelling, screaming insults and calling names.  It was more than "get your poo together."  However, you could be right.

You may be on to something, as the Panthers have had very little star quality complementary receivers to Smith (Moose, Proehl, etc.), particularly young draft picks indeed.

The major difference being: You weren't on your job when that dude or woman was breaking into your car. So unfortunately, you can't compare to the two.

Yes, you are on your own at your job and are expected to succeed with out help. No doubt. However, if you ever want to be considered for a promotion, a managerial position, and/or "one of the best of workers", you usually need to assist or train other colleagues as a prerequisite.

Selfish employees, usually don't make good mentors or managers. No you don't have to be one. However, chances are you won't be a mentor or manager either.

Obviously, Cotchery, etc., are the mentor types. And Steve Smith was not. He [smith] was the star salesman who management tolerated when he was productive. However, as soon as he lost his star quality, management moved on, cause they didn't feel he provided any other benefits outside of his contribution on the field.

Oh well.

Lived up to expectations? Thats a tough one, but (and I know youre gonna hate this) LaFell is a serviceable wideout. He wasnt in our budget is mostly why he's not with us anymore, but the guy can play in the NFL. Dropsies or not that dude still got better with Smitty here. His blocking improved and his demeanor while maybe silly was still serious enough to show up for work and stay out of trouble off the field. Can we really say that LaFell was a waste of cap?

I think what is still ignored by most in this Smitty ordeal is that leaders have to be replaced at some point and its rarely pretty. Smith and Gross were clearly going to be in the way of Cam's ability to earn the nod as "the leader". If you look at hierarchies all throughout history and even more so beyond the 15th century, you can see that leaders dont just step aside. They either get wacked, or exiled, or maimed and left for dead (or a combination of the 3).

So in the modern sense, Gross and Smitty have been exiled for the sake of the Panthers LEGACEH!

I think the opportunity for Cam to lead was at the core as you suggest. I hear that Smitty was in his ear constantly.  I thought Lafell flashed, but never quite made the next step--however, he was a third rounder.  Expectations were determined when we did not look to upgrade him, when we depended on a small speed WR entering his mid thirties and Lafell.  Lafell was OK vs. Zones, but a nickel in man coverage could shut him down.  His blocking was great, but he was a #3 on his best day.

We are all guessing, but I feel good about the quality we have here. No standouts and a rookie, but I think we upgraded at WR.  I think the line will be as good and better by midseason, barring injury.  I am concerned about S, something most are not even talking about.  I even kinda like our CBs.

Nice to have a disagreement on here without the other party getting mad or taking things personally.  Hats off.

I just guess like everyone else, but it is a bit strange.  Thanks.
