Lest you forget, Fox was sure to make you aware that this is Derek Jeter's final season in the majors. The Captain's name was spoken no fewer than 100 times on tonight's All-Star Game broadcast, but at what cost? That of remembering people like Tony Gwynn, Don Zimmer, or Bob Welch—none of whom were mentioned during the broadcast.

Agreed, but I don't think it should be put on Jeter.  He's been saying that he didn't want this to be about him.  Fox and the MLB are just trying to milk it for as much as they can.

I also don't really understand all of the hate Wainwright is getting right now.  It was the first hit of a game where there are always multiple runs scored.  Yea, I know it was a double, but the score was tied at 3 - 3 at some point.

I agree and I genuinely think Jeter would prefer not to have the attention. I still can't get over them not even mentioning Gwynn last night. All I can think of is that MLB decided to distance themselves from the whole smokeless tobacco thing associated with him. Regardless, for them not to honor or even mention Gwynn is a shame.

People are pissed Wainwright got the start over Kershaw.

 

Then Wainwright admitted he grooved up a couple meatballs for Jeter.

If I were a fan/player on the Cards or any other NL contender then I would be pissed that he grooved one as well.  I disagree with the HFA rule, I think it should go to the league with the best IL record as that is a better determining factor on which is the best league, but as long as we have that rule then the players that are playing in the All-Star game owe it to their teammates to give it their all because it could be the difference of Game Seven being played at home or on the road.

 

Yes it was the first AB, but Jeter's double was the beginning of a three run inning.  If Waino had recorded that first out then who knows how the inning plays out, it could have changed the outcome of the game.  If the Cards lose Game Seven in Oakland then I doubt they will take much solace in Jeter's double.

 

Of course MLB should set a good example and if they are going to make the game matter then it should involve the best players...period.  That means no more fan vote and you have to get rid of the one player per team rule, which would mean that Jeter and several others would not be there.

 

I am all for it going back to an exhibition and then this type of stuff is fine, but if it is going to have such an important impact then it needs to be treated that way and anybody not trying their best when it could impact the championship deserves criticism in my opinion.

Waino is a complete idiot for admitting and then trying to retract his statement, no doubt about that.

 

I'm fine with honoring a player with the career of Jeter, but the whole tip of the hat commercial and constant mentioning was a bit of a joke. I thought some of the Jones treatment was overdone, but this took it to a whole new level. Talk about overshadowing deserving players.

 

Not mentioning Gwynn blows my mind.

Someone on PrimeTime yesterday had a good point.  If the game matters, then why do we not play the best players the entire game?  Instead, we take out the starters after 3 or 4 innings.  I don't hate that the game is is the deciding factor for home-field advantage, but some things do need to change if they really want it to matter.

 

I'm not opposed to the IL idea either.

Agreed, of course the starters are not the best players since it is a popularity contest and not based on who the best players have been.  If the best players of this season were starting then Altuve would have been at 2B, Alexei/Aybar would have started at SS and Brantley would have been in there ahead of either Cruz/Bautista/Jones.  At least in the case of 2B/OF/DH they had strong performers, but there were better options.

Derek Jeter is right up there with those guys in terms of on field greatness & name recognition. He is arguably one of the 15 or so greatest players of all-time. It's well-deserved recognition.

Jeter is one of the fifteen best of the last thirty or so years, but he is not one of the fifteen best players to ever play the game, particularly when you are also counting pitchers like Koufax.

 

Regardless, I do not care if Babe Ruth is in the box, there is no reason to groove one that could force you to travel for Game 7.

How many years was Jeter even the best hitter on his own team? He was a good to great contact hitter who was generally surrounded by more dangerous hitters most of his career. Don't even start on defense where at his best was average.
