Clinton Portis on WFNZ yesterday....

Huddle poster Monday:

"FUG Gettleman, he couldn't sign a half decent OL or DB, how the FUG is he going to take this team anywhere???"

Huddle poster Tuesday:

"OMFG, HOW have we not signed CAM to a $130M contract yet????"

If you can't see the transition this team is going to have to go through to keep Cam, Luke, Star, KK, Benji etc long term while having to put up with the Harper/Decoud/Bells in the short run then no one can help you.

Be glad that we picked a damn good season in the NFCS to have a transition season.

It literally makes me want to throw up thinking about it, but the longer he goes without a deal, the more possible it becomes.

I don't want to go all mid-market, mid-market, Napoleon-complex-having, woe-as-me-I'm-a-victim Panthers fan, but I am starting to feel that Cam coudl very well end up leaving...  and what are the odds that a franchise, superstar QB ever leaves the team that drafted him by his own volition?  IT NEVER HAPPENS.  But, us being us, it wouldn't surprise me if we ended up becoming the exception to the rule.

We have not helped him...  essentially, we have disrespected him.  He looks around and sees lesser players like Luck, Wilson, Kaep, and RG3, and he sees how their franchises have put them up on a pedestal, surrounded them with talent, and given them every opportunity to succeed.  Meanwhile, we have a patchwork OL in front of him, with essentially an UDFA guard at LT and a DT starting at the RT.

We got rid of the best WR on the roster for no clear reason.  Drafted one WR with hopes of him being the #1 from the jump, and then surrounded him with career slot receivers, which comprises the SLOWEST WR corps in all of football.

Everytime I see Cam pull himself up off the ground after getting pummeled in the pocket, or after taking a cheap shot following a scramble because his line didn't block or his receivers didn't get open...  all I can think of is how bad he wants to be treated like the franchise QB he is.  If fans have thought about it, Cam has had to think about it.

I trust that Cam loves it here and wants to be here, I just don't trust that Gettleman feels the same way and it is showing through his actions.  I fear that Cam is going to be forced to move on because Gettleman appears to be working against him as things stand.  As a GM, there's no way that you allow your franchise QB to test FA.

Before I switch over to airplane mode, I thought I'd mention this little nugget. Did anybody hear Clinton Portis on WFNZ Primetime yesterday? He is a great listen and is a weekly guest with Moose on Kroeger's show. He seems to think Cam will test the free agent market because of the state of our franchise. Mentioned St Louis/L.A. Rams as a great fit. Discuss.

No. I refuse to listen when Portis is on.

I doubt he is going anywhere.

But for those of you saying we should all be patient, that we have to wait 2 more years to get our cap in order and to surround Cam with some weapons, sorry, but that is ridiculous. You are asking a very talented young man to wait until year 6 of his career to put a team around him?

NFL franchises can be turned around much quicker than that, especially with a franchise QB in place. Sure, Hurney left us a cap mess, but our problems have as much to do with who we have brought in and not just how much they cost.

We need to surround Cam with some talent this offseason. No more excuses.

Cam isn't going anywhere

Gettleman would obviously prefer that he does. No intelligent person can be convinced that Gettleman wouldn't have done anything he could to build up the offensive line AS HIS FIRST PRIORITY if Andrew Luck was his QB.

Look around Cam. The Panthers don't think you're the guy since your protection IS NOT A PRIORITY.

No one is saying you have to wait two more years. The process has already started and will continue to get better this offseason and next before we have don't have any options to keep Cam. I mean....where did you read someone saying we had to wait two more years?

My God....people really honestly believe poo like this.

Franchise tag him.

It guarantees that you get something back for him.  You can work out whatever compensation another team is willing to give.

No way I could see the team just letting him walk.

Not "just letting him walk" would be a business move. The Panthers are a business, so of course they won't just let him walk, but Gettleman not prioritizing protecting Cam is all the evidence anyone with a clue would need to know that he doesn't actually believe Cam is the long-term solution at QB.

Pointless discussion that has no basis in fact. No offense to Portis or anyone else on talk radio, but they talk, a lot. Sometimes it's stupid, but ratings are ratings any way you can get them. This is not worth getting upset over.

PS- Cam said he wanted to go #1 and has given no indication otherwise in 4 years. We may have drafted the very best young WR in the game and our team will look completely different in a year, or two, or three, five, etc., with the exception of #1.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
