HC Candidates & their potential schemes

This.

There definitely is that weird unspoken assumption around these parts that we must stick to a 4-3.

I can see us switching in these next few years depending on who's our coach.

It gets shot down a lot, mostly because people think you can just switch systems with the same players and there'd be no transition.

We would definitely need to shift the defensive roster somewhat to run it effectively.

For sure.  I think the toughest part is identifying who could legit play well in one that's on the current roster.

DTs and DEs outside of the hybrid types are very different in the respective schemes.  Same with LBs to a degree.

I think a hybrid gap 3-4 could work here.

Off the top of my head, we'd need to find a few critical positions that need to be effective: Nose Tackle, OLBs, FS, & SS

I actually think KK could excel at DE in a 3-4 but we'd need another. Don't know about Star though but a Short-NT-Star line could be intriguing.  I could see Addison at OLB as a backup but the rest of our DL is pretty much strictly 4-3 imo.

Could this realistically work?:

OLB-Kuechly-Davis-OLB

Short-NT-Star

I'd probably put Davis outside.

I think Colin Cole has been a nose guard before.  Probably prefer him as a backup though.

And good as he obviously is, I'm not really a big fan of putting Luke Kuechly in a 3-4.

Yeah he just would seem out of place.  He's THE man in the middle.

    • frank, that ball was very catchable where it hit his hands. I don't even think he bent at waist until after he dropped it. He actually slows his pace to position himself to catch the ball. That will never be a pass I'd blame on the QB.   NFL+ _ Live Games on mobile, NFL RedZone, NFL Network and More! - Google Chrome 2026-01-15 13-54-54.mp4
    • https://overthecap.com/position/left-guard   Lewis is the 9th highest paid Left Guard in the league. I bet it was higher when the deal was done two years ago.    https://overthecap.com/position/right-guard Hunt #3 highest Right Guard   There is a tab in the upper left portion of the graphic that allows looking at the different positions.
    • It was a great play, but a better catch than throw. The TE boxes out Moehrig for position. Jumps to catch the ball. Catches it and turns 180 degrees while he's still in the air. Comes down and toe taps to stay in bounds and lunges for the goal post. That first part where he boxes out Moehrig for the ball is huge. If he doesn't do that and simply fades back to catch the ball (this is why Bryce doesn't trust XL), then Moehrig likely undercuts the pass for a break up or INT. Stafford trusts his receivers to make plays for him. Here I slowed it down so you can see it. Great play but amazing catch and score by the TE.  NFL+ _ Live Games on mobile, NFL RedZone, NFL Network and More! - Google Chrome 2026-01-15 13-45-32.mp4 NFL+ _ Live Games on mobile, NFL RedZone, NFL Network and More! - Google Chrome 2026-01-15 13-44-37.mp4
