Dave Gettleman uttered these words during his first draft with the Carolina Panthers and i think you can truly  see the meaning behind those words now.

Gettleman has added an unbelievable amount of young talent during his first two drafts here in Carolina. This has now put the Panthers in a decision where they can trade up if they see a player that they like and boy have they done that. I am excited to see the next two picks and boy am i excited for the season. Keep pounding

He went into detail on this again today. Beyond the obvious drop in talent that comes with trading down, he implied that he's probably never going to trade out of the first because you lose the 5th year option on contracts with players drafted below round 1.

He's going to drive a Huddle contingent crazy, but we are seldom if ever going to move down.

    • Pretty sure that a QB contract payday is all the competition any QB in this league needs, I don't think a competent backup is going to make them play any harder when the current situation wouldn't warrant the contract extension yet anyways. Your opening point in this post is also the problem, "Bryce has shown signs of improving", but that's still all he's shown, and he's only showing that because of just how bad he was to start his career. If he played like last season from the beginning and never improved one bit, then I actually think more fans would be ready to move on from him, which is what's weird.  It's like going from one of the biggest draft busts of all time into the 25th best QB in the league over 3 years means he deserves a long term $40+ million a year contract extension. Improvement shouldn't be the goal when the result of said improvement is still bottom of the league levels.
    • Yeah, but we've seen him do it. Just not often. I think that's the reason for the taller WRs. Would likely be a problem finding someone like Jimmy Horn in the mess.
    • And the Rams, Seattle, Patriots, Green Bay, Jaguars and the Bills who all made the playoffs and in case you forgot, Seattle and the Patriots played in the SB. By any measure, that's pretty brutal.
