SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Panthers have made a series of roster moves that began with cornerback Chris Houston's decision to retire.

Carolina signed cornerback T. J. Heath and defensive tackle

Kenny Horsleyicon-article-link.gif prior to the team's return to the practice field Wednesday following a day off. The Panthers also waived kicker Matt Wile.

Houston, a second-round draft pick in 2007, signed with the Panthers in June after being out of the league in 2014. Wile, an undrafted rookie from Michigan, saw his second stint with Carolina end after less than a week.

Heath has bounced around the NFL since being signed as an undrafted rookie by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2011. He played in five games as a rookie and appeared in two games for the Miami Dolphins last season. In between, the Jacksonville State product spent time with Cleveland, Buffalo and Cincinnati but didn't appear in any games.

Horsley was signed to a future contract by the Washington Redskins in January – his first NFL opportunity – but was waived in May. A product of Bethel University and Mesabi Range Community College in Minnesota, the Virginia native has played some defensive end and played in the Canadian Football League in 2014.

    • It’ll be interesting to see how the board falls I completely agree with you on TE for us The safety from Oregon would be the cherry on top for Evero’s defense/scheme.  If a OL’men is there that you love it would be very hard to pass up. This fan base seems to just see Walker as a stop gap but I wouldn’t be so sure. He’s the same age as Ekwonu. He’s had a much more impressive career arc/progression than Icky has. He’s the better pass protector. As far as I see it if Walker has a good year I’d bring him back over Icky. Ekwonu isn’t some elite franchise LT. Playing next to Lewis is going to be great for Walker much like it has been for Icky. We definitely need to get younger/cheaper on the OL though so for this reason alone it’s still top of my list come round 1 if board falls this way  Could also use another corner with Mike Jackson’s deal up after this season and needing a nickel but Corey Thornton looked really good in that role in the limited time we got to see him. However he’s coming off an achillies injury and you never know with those.  Then as mentioned above we do still have a need at WR. As far as “weapons” go it’s kind of a 2 man show with Tmac and Coker and neither is a burner. If Jordan Tyson is there at 19 and we can have a young WR group locked up for cheap that’s a huge advantage cap wise  And don’t forget linebacker. That clip in Devin’s Lloyd blueprint they used from Evero saying they need more intelligence there could’ve been left out for Wallace’s sake but it’s true. Wallace is lost in coverage. Pair a smart linebacker with Lloyd and that’s a group with Wallace and Cherelus being depth
    • The fact that this is even a discussion is a testament of the level of front office badassery that's going on.
    • Not always. LT was for the Giants. So was Ray Lewis. Von Miller was moreso than Manning his final year in the season that shall not be named. It's usually the QB, but not always.
