Question: Need clarification re: injuries and roster moves

Given our long list of injured players, I'm wondering about what happens with our roster if some of our starters / primary backups aren't up to playing on week1?

Also, when can Kelvin safely be added to IR?

I'm assuming that Kelvin needs to stay on the active roster until we cut down to the 53 man roster, i.e. until Sept. 5th.

I'm assuming for any injured player we want to keep and who we expect to play this season (i.e. someone like Star...), we have to keep them on the active roster.  I know we are allowed to designate one player per season on the IR as eligible to return.  Is there a length of time they have to stay on IR?  (I have a figure of 6 weeks in my head, but I'm not sure that's correct).

Finally do those on the PUP (Presley) count towards our active roster at the 75 player cuts?  Or is it 75 active + PUP?

Here's an article that gave a good summary of upcoming roster cut deadlines and rules:

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/08/when_are_2015_nfl_roster_cuts.html

All NFL teams now have 90 players on their training camp rosters, but those numbers must be reduced to 53 by the beginning of the regular season. All teams are also permitted to have a 10-man practice squad for the season. But when will all this go down? Soon, actually.

The regular season kicks off the weekend of Sept. 10-14. But here are the deadlines for each roster move between now and then:

Tuesday, Sept. 1: By 4 p.m. (EDT), all teams must reduce their active rosters from 90 to 75 players.

Thursday, Sept. 3: All 32 teams play their final preseason games.

Saturday, Sept. 5: By 4 p.m. (EDT), all teams must reduce their active/inactive rosters to 53 players.

Saturday, Sept. 5: Also by 4 p.m. (EDT), per the NFL, teams "that have players in the categories of Active/Physically Unable to Perform or Active/Non-Football Injury or Illness must select one of the following options: place player on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform or Reserve/NonFootball Injury or Illness, whichever is applicable; request waivers; terminate contract; trade contract; or continue to count the player on the Active List."

Sunday, Sept. 6: The claiming period for any players placed on waivers at final roster cuts expires at 12 p.m. (EDT).

Sunday, Sept. 6: Beginning at 1 p.m. (EDT), teams may begin to establish their practice squads. No player may be added to any team's practice squad until all teams have been simultaneously notified that the player has been waived.

Sunday, Sept. 6: After 4 p.m. (EDT), teams may place one player on the injured reserve/designated for return list.

In case it's helpful for reference on the question of injuries and roster moves, here's the list of injured players based on the latest injury update from BBR

http://blackandbluereview.com/health-watch-after-panthers-third-preseason-game/

The comments about each player below are mine, not BBRs, unless specified otherwise.

1. Starters:

   A. New injuries:

  •  CB Charles Tillman:  (Possible head injury).  Need more info..
  •  WR Jerricho Cotchery: (Tweaked groin). Need more info.  Losing Cotch for any length of time would be very concerning right now.
  •  Probably nothing seriousLB Luke Kuechly: Per BBR: "Appeared to tweak something on his left leg late in the second quarter. Came to the sideline for one play before returning to finish the half, so it’s likely not serious."

B. Prior Injuries

  • WR Devin Funchess (hamstring)  - sounds like he's very close to playing.  We need him, but we also can't risk rushing him!
  • C Ryan Kalil (knee) – Per BBR "confident he’ll play in season opener"
  • DT Kawann Short (back) - sounds like he's pretty close to playing, that this might be more precautionary
  • DT Star Lotulelei (foot - "stress reaction") – Per BBR: "back in a walking boot, but mostly as a precaution"  sounds like they're thinking he MIGHT play week 1, but I'm not quite as confident yet.  Given how well our D Line played last night, I'd be inclined to be a bit cautious on bringing him back.
  • DE Charles Johnson (calf) – Sounds like he's close to playing - Per BBR "looked good playing catch with Short before the game"

C. On IR Out for Season:

  • WR Kelvin Benjamin (torn ACL)
  • DE Frank Alexander (torn Achilles)

Among the starters, with the exception of the new injuries (Tillman & Cotchery) for which we don't have much information, it sounds like most are making good progress towards playing soon.  I'm glad the team has been a bit conservative in the past 1 - 2 weeks, especially since the beginning of the season is the easiest part of our schedule.  Yes, I know we need to start strong, but it will hurt us badly if we lose anymore starters this early.

2. OTHER PLAYERS:

A. New injuries:

  • C Brian Folkerts: Rolled his ankle in the first half.

B. Prior injuries

As best I know, we don't have a lot of information on the severity / timeframe on most of these:

  • TE Richie Brockel (shoulder)
  • TE Ed Dickson (groin)
  • OT Davonte Wallace (concussion)
  • OL Amini Silatolu (calf)
  • DB Colin Jones (groin)
  • CB Lou Young (hamstring)
  • ??  DT Micanor Regis (not on the BBR injury list, but I don't think he was at the game last night??)
  • WR DeAndre Presley (is currently on PUP.  I don't recall what his injury is...)

Of these players the one player I am most concerned with is Ed Dickson.  I think his importance has gone up significantly in the wake of Kelvin's injury.

C. On IR Out for Season:

  • G Tyronne Green (Achilles)

I don't think either Tillman or cotch have serious injuries..  I remember seeing Olsen in some pain last night too, but I guess that was nothing. I think luke got kicked in the calf on that tackle at the sideline.. The muscle probably just got tight or sore

Lots of speculation that Brockel winds up on IR.

Yes, I've seen that.  It would be one way Wegher / Ward could make the roster.

I assume if Presley is not activated from the PUP this week (and I've heard nothing to suggest he would be), he would be placed on the regular season PUP as part of roster cuts and be re-evaluated in 6 weeks?  Or would we likely just cut him?
