Week 3 vs Saints - Game at a Glance Tables

I know we're all gearing up for the Tampa game tomorrow, but I finally have a bit of free time this week to post my "game at a glance" table from last Sunday's Saints game.  Enjoy.

Here's the side by side tables for both teams.  I'll then post each team's table separately below.  A reminder that these tables shows the details of every drive by each team.  The numbers in the columns "return" "run" "pass"  show any "big plays" by either team on the given drive.

A few observations:

1) This week shows clearly that a team does not necessarily need "big plays" to score.  Technically, New Orleans had no "big plays" as typically tracked and defined in NFL statistics (runs 10+ yards, passes 25+ yards).  In their two scoring drives to open the game, the Saints generally relied on passes of 8 - 11 yards, and runs of 4 - 8 yards.  They got the job done, including that 2nd drive when they moved the ball 94 yards for a TD after Carolina had pinned them on their 6 yard line.

So... take "big play" statistics with a grain of salt.  Obviously the only big plays that really matter are TDs or FGs.

2) Although we didn't score on our first drive, we did get well into Saints territory on that drive. None of the typical slow start on offense.  Nice to see that we had no 3 & outs until the end of the game.  As Cam mentioned after the game, (drives and opportunities were at a premium in this game, unlike the Houston game!) and it's great to see that we able to get in a rhythm quickly and respond to the Saints early 10 points with 10 of our own.

3) Carolina scored all 5 times we were inside the Saints 30.  We scored 3 TDs on 4 trips inside the Red Zone.  Our Red Zone Efficiency (TDs inside the Red Zone) has increased from 33% to 50% to 75% over the past 3 weeks.

4) Unlike the Saints, we relied a lot on big plays to move the ball and to score.  Those 2 50+ yard passes were beautiful to watch!  More please!

Getting the ball off of turnovers and the last two drives where we went three-and-out . . . that absolutely cannot happen.  We need to start off fast (which we did) AND finish strong.  We'll need a full game of turnovers, special teams, and bookends of a fast start and clock killing first downs to beat Seattle and GB.

Agree, it is scary how close we came to wasting that J-No interception and not shutting down the game after it!

I also assume the saints midrange success was due to Luke's absence.  No way he let's them do that to us all day.

    • I’m really having a hard time understanding how this actually went down. -Renfrow expected to make roster as 2nd/3rd string. -Panthers cut Renfrow; Keep Brycen Tremayne, and add UDFA receiver (Dalevon Campbell) to active roster.  -Canales/Morgan say it’s totally up to Hunter whether he wants to come back or not, they would love to have him.    -Renfrow not signed to PS -Panthers trade Adam Thielen -Hunter Renfrow signed to active roster with a raise after an injury to Coker nobody heard about and is likely to start.    Our WR room is now: -Xavier Legette (2024 1st round pick) -Tet McMillan (2025 1st round pick) -Hunter Renfrow (1 year out of the league) -David Moore (Canales’ friend? A guy way past his prime) -Jimmy Horn (Likely a Shi Smith reprint, but has potential 2025 6th round pick, weighs 174 lbs) -Brycen Tremayne (2023 UDFA who was on Washington’s PS for 2 years and caught 1 pass for -2 yards and averaged 300 yards per year at Stanford) -Dalevon Campbell (2025 UDFA had a good preseason but had 1463 yards and 3 TDs over 5 college seasons at 3 different schools). What the hell is going on?
    • Not uncommon for week 1 games. Especially against good defenses. It’s why I prefer my team play these small schools week 1 if they are going to play them. Gives the offense time to get calibrated.
