Anyone use a Nexus 7 tablet ?

I am going to buy my wife a tablet as a Christmas gift - I really need to spend less than $150 for it.  It will be both of our first use of this type of wireless tech -  we dont even have smart phones so it is all new to us.   I am just interested in using it via  wifi at 16 gb.  One place has them for $129. .  Her main use will be e mail surfing the web and casting to the tv via chromecast.   I have read some very good reviews of them and would like to hear the opinions of  some folks who I trust as non biased.  I have also looked at the Asus memo pad here

It is about $35 less and may do everything she wants to do as well.

I have the 2012 version. It's a great tablet, but one of the recent updates has slowed me to an absolute crawl. Not sure what's going on with it.

As good as any other tablet I've used other than that.

I was just reading some reviews on another site - saying that the 5.1.1 update completly fried their os.  Not good.  Which update screwed up yours?  I guess that problem is a deal killer for me.

That's the one, I'm pretty sure. But this is the 2012 version which isn't the one you would be getting, so don't let my experience dissuade you. I don't know that the 2013 (or newer if they have made more since I stopped following) are affected by the same problem.

If that's the case then yeah I would be cautious. It just feels very poorly optimized after that update, or like there's a memory leak. It takes forever to load anything. But hang on, let me go plug in mine and get the latest updates and I'll let you know how it's running now. Maybe they've fixed it.

I last used it in May (I can tell cause that's where my twitter feed was scrolled to lol). They haven't released an update since then, so I guess they're content to let the problems be problems. I mean I'm reading a lot of sites saying 'the problems aren't for everyone, mine is fine' but that just makes it a pretty expensive crap-shoot.

I found this information online that may be of help with your tablet.

It's running perfectly smooth now on 5.1.1 after a reset. Running well like this I'd fully recommend it.

Of course, my backup didn't work so I get to install all of my apps manually, but at least it runs smoothly now.

Have you ever needed more memory than the 16 gb and wish it took a sd card ?  This machine gets glowing reports except for the update problems and I am still interested in it.

    • I dont think people realize how hard it is to find a consistent starting QB in the NFL. Byrce will not heart us to a SB but I do think he can manage to get us one or close..go all in on defense and change the Offensive passing game and play calls. I really think our biggest problem is our HC.  Take New Orleans QB for example, switch him and Bryce and I promise you it'll look similar or worse. New Orleans OC is levels ahead of Canales. And as far as the draft goes, in this division with as much rb talent as we face ..the answer...this guy:    Pick up a couple edge rushers in FA along with a corner and plug this guy in Rozeboom's spot. Defense solved. But only if we get a top tier rusher on that dline....jus saying
    • I think I'm going to the game in Los Angeles vs Paraguay, and the England / Croatia game here in Dallas since my mom is British.  For decent seats anywhere in the building(s) it looks like it will be upwards of $7k for the two games.  Insane. Just for perspective, you could buy field level EPL tickets for any one of the top sides in the league, and it would be 10% of the price you'll pay for crappy seats at the World Cup.
    • Meh… I knew this thread would turn into a Bryce/Tua comparison, when they couldn’t be further apart situations.   Dolphins catered there whole offense toward Tua, they brought in a coach that would run a Tua friendly offense, the went in got the best most explosive WR in the NFL and paired him the fastest WR in that years draft. Panthers have done the opposite, they went and got a Pete Carroll disciple who likes to run the ball under center, they drafted big slow WR who got little separation in college. Literally the polar opposite of Bryce’s scouting report coming out of Alabama.   Tua was a decent QB 2 years ago, but the concussions, lack of movement have caught up to him. He never had a great arm to begin with but now since he doesn’t want to get hit he’s taking the whole offense down with him.
