Here's a look at the latest player grades (week 14) compared to a number of weeks earlier in the season (I haven't been compiling this every week, and PFF didn't start offering these grades to new subscribers until week 4.)  It's interesting to see how the grades for the team and certain players have evolved over time.

Back in week 7 we had 4 players ranked 1st in their position (Luke. Josh, KK, Kalil).  Now we only have two players ranked #1 (Luke & Josh), but we have a lot more players ranked in top 10.  Week 4 we had 4 players in top 10 (would have been 5 if Luke had not been out with injury).  In Week 7 we had 7 top 10 players.  Now in week 14 we have 10 top 10 players.  It's great to see Cam, Stew & Olsen getting better recognition for their excellent play.  And we're down from 5 players with a grade of less than 50 to only 1.

Note the colors are my own - they are close to PFF's color scheme, but not quite identical.

If I have more time in a few days after my travel, I'll try to post more of the specific details per position group, including the grades for passing, running, pass blocking, run blocking, coverage, pass defense, run defense...

I did not realize Bene was being rated so badly. Wow.

Nice film analysis of one of our main offensive formations against the Falcons

http://www.catscratchreader.com/2015/12/16/10269114/carolina-panthers-all-22-film-analysis-the-3x1-formation

(Go to the original to see the GIFs of the plays)

Excerpt:

The Carolina Panthers were nearly unstoppable moving the football through the air against the Atlanta Falcons’ defense last Sunday. A huge part of their success was due to the fantastic play designs specifically created to attack the Falcons’ Cover 3 zone defense. One particular formation the Panthers used to attack the Falcons’ zone defense was the 3x1 formation out of 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR).

The 3x1 formation has been one of the Panthers’ most popular passing formations over the past five years because of its versatility. The 3x1 formation floods one side of the field with a trips (three receiver) set, which often forces opposing defenses to over-commit to that side of the formation, leaving the weak-side vulnerable in the run game and passing game.

The Panthers wasted no time going with the 3x1 formation against the Falcons. On their second offensive play, they line up in a very tight 3x1 formation with Greg Olsen as the backside receiver at the end of the line of scrimmage. The Falcons respond with a 4-2-5 nickel defense with three cornerbacks in zone coverage. Olsen runs a slant route and is able to get just enough separation to make the catch against tight coverage, gaining 11 yards on the play.

On the next drive, the Panthers once again come out in a 3x1 formation. However, this time it’s more spread out, with Ted Ginn as the backside "X-Iso" receiver. On the trips side, the Panthers put Greg Olsen and Jerricho Cotchery in the slot, with Philly Brown on the outside.

Notice the defensive alignment. The Falcons are playing Cover 3, which is a single high safety formation. The safety automatically cheats towards the trips side of the field, which leaves Ted Ginn isolated in one-on-one coverage against the cornerback, something Cam Newton immediately notices pre-snap.

Cam wastes no time making up his mind -- he’s going to give Ginn a chance deep down the field. Ginn does a great job pushing through the early contact by the cornerback, and makes the 74-yard touchdown catch.

Hey Y'all,  I'm back in Charlotte and catching up on all the Panthers' news I've missed since my travels began on Thursday...I'm so excited to be back in Panthers country.,, but was disappointed in CLT airport - no Panthers gear displayed, no Go Panthers banners...  thought there'd be a bit more fandom evident as soon as I landed in CLT.

Catching up on Twitter, just came across another stat from last week's game via BBR.

Missed this one last week - Ted Ginn's 120-yd game was the first time this year a Panthers' WR hit 100 yds receiving.

Amazing that without any star wideout, and no other games in which any WR reached 100 yards, we're still 13-0.  GO PANTHERS!

Interesting that Beckham can be stopped by lining up close, and Josh likes to line up close. Advantage Norman.
