A significant part of the Panthers success can be attributed to...

Calvin Johnson sucks now, guys

he'd only be useful if we started calling nothing but plays out of the shotgun like it was 2011

He doesn't suck... he just doesn't have that 4.3 speed anymore.  He's just your everyday possession receiver now, so you can't use him like before.

Why is it almost a 4 letter word when anybody mentions ways in which to improve a unit that still ranks amongst the league's worst when it comes to talent and production, the WR core?

I am an FSU grad. Love Benji. Thought he was absolutely the right choice and had a great year as a rookie. He is also coming off an ACL injury where he missed the entire season. I know it is not something some may want to discuss...but there is a chance that KB does not come back the same. There is a chance that he develops injury problems for the rest of his career. And while he did have a great rookie season...less keep in perspective he was the 3rd most targeted WR on a team depleted of any other options last year. We MAY not talking about prime Calvin Johnson here.

At some point, the many high draft picks that we spent on the DLine needs to step up. Especially since so many want to give new contracts to all of them. So we are going to give all the DL contracts AND draft more pass rushers too AND sign Mario Williams?

In 2 years, Gettleman has used a 2014 1st, 2015 2nd, 2015 3rd, and 2015 6th round selections on the WR corps.

Just FYI.

What do you need him to do to satisfy your WR need?  Use every pick on WRs?

Cam's going to win MVP and we're the #1 offense in the league with a return specialist, 2nd round rookie, veteran possession receiver and a 2nd year UDFA. And we'll have a top WR coming back from injury next year. Why in the world would we go out and spend money or high draft picks on "weapons" that we don't need while we have huge needs at other positions going forward?

Its called #89 Withdrawal Syndrome.  His methadone prescription has run out for it.

Where are you getting that we used a 3rd round or even 6th round selection in 2015 on WR? I do not understand?

Again, suggesting that a unit that ranked in the bottom 1/3 of the league in production and talent could use additional help is not asinine. In addition, in the last 1/2 decade, we have spent 2 "high" picks (KB and Funch) on WRs. In that same time period we have spent 2 No. 1s on LBs (Luke and Shaq), and 5 high (a round 1-3 pick) on DL (McClain, Fua, Star, Kawann, and Ealy). Please keep in mind that these units also featured the likes of Hardy and Davis when these selections were made. As we all know, it was not until after S. Smith was cut that a high pick was used on WR.

So I don't quite get your suggestion that the Panthers are using "every pick on WRs". That is not even remotely close to being the truth. And also keep in mind that unlike LB (Luke) and DL (Johnson) we didn't have a "high priced" WR when we made those selections.

This of course is made all the more ironic because we have several Huddlers advocating that we:

1. Resign Star L.

2. Resign Kawann S.

3. Spend another No. 1 pick on a pass rusher

4. Give Mario Williams 9+ million

I am not suggesting that there is anything wrong with doing any or even all of the above. But when someone on the Huddle suggest "hey, you know, we could use some more WR help for our 24th ranked passing attack" half the Huddle reacts as if he is suggesting we trade Newton and Luke for Gabbert and Dewayne Bowe.

Again, it is okay to have a talented WR core. The CBA allows for it.

Finally, there is more than one way to win in the NFL. We have seen fairly balanced teams, teams with great offenses, teams with great defenses, teams with HOF QBs in their primes, teams with suspect QBs, teams with great WRs core, teams with a running game, teams with mediocre running games, teams with poor WRs core, teams that built through the draft, teams that built through free agency, teams with short QBs, teams with old QBs, teams with inexperience Head Coaches, teams with Head Coaches of 10+ years, teams that run the ball, teams that throw the ball...

win a Superbowl in recent history (since 2000).

Let's stop with "only way win in the NFL is X" nonsense. There is nothing wrong with bringing in free agents to upgrade various units of your team--especially ones that rank 24th.

What are we going to say if the Chiefs win the Superbowl with Alex Smith and Jeremy Maclin? "Well they should have rolled with Aaron Murray and Dewayne Bowe."

No. 41: St. Louis → Carolina (D). St. Louis traded this selection to Carolina in exchange for Carolina's 2015 second, third and sixth round selections (57th, 89th & 201st)

Some teams have QBs that are of a level that their teams have to spend HUGE parts of their salary cap for tools that limit and obscure said QBs limitations.

Other teams have QBs that lift the players around them.

The former teams start QBs like Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick and hope for the best.

The latter teams start QBs like Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger and win championships.

Gotcha.

And one could argue that there are teams like Green Bay that enhance the elite talent of their QBs by bringing in talent that is commensurate with their QB's talent.

And I would argue that the Steelers has spent Huge portions of their resources on helping out Big Ben. As for Brady, currently, you are 100% correct...which brings me to my point: there is more than one way to win in the NFL.

The worst thing we could do to Newton is "Lebron James" (Cleveland). Or "McNabb" like Philly. Just because you have a generational talent, it does not give you license to ignore the pieces around him. The Colts didn't look at Manning and say "you know future HOF Peyton...no Harrison for you!"

Again, you can win a Superbowl with a generational talent at BOTH QB and WR. You can win a SB with generational talent at just QB or just at WR or just a RB. There is more than one way to win in the NFL.

I know Cam likes to play Superman...but the Panthers should not actually operate as if he is Superman. When an opportunity is available, surround him with as much talent as you would Alex Smith or Colin Kaepernick (in your words).

Green Bay is a bad example considering Davante Adams horrible performance.

MUCH better example to support your argument.

So how do you know that Gettleman won't draft another WR in this upcoming 2016 Draft again?

    • Baseball is waqaayy better suited to statistical analysis than football. If a hitter hits a home run, it's pretty much his own effort though the point goes to the team as a whole. For a team to score a touchdown (let's say via pass) the center has to make a good snap, he and the rest of the line have to block well enough to keep the defense from getting to the quarterback, the quarterback has to throw a good pass, the receiver has to run the correct route and catch the ball, the other potential targets have to effectively play their roles, and so on and so on and so on...  Any single one of those things going wrong can short circuit the whole thing, and even if it's all done right the defense might still stop it. Individual stats just don't paint a complete picture. There are too many variables. To get an accurate picture that way requires looking at things from several different angles, something most folks are either ill equipped or unwilling to do. I don't bother with all that. I just watch the game and go by what I know.
    • Bryce logic is just The Golden Calf of Bristol logic boss.  It’s the same Skip Bayless argument  doesn’t matter he isn’t very good.   Doesn’t matter he is why they are so often down.   Doesn’t matter he doesn’t really generate offense.  We got some really odd ball wins and there are some are some random late plays…it’s just a repackaged Tebowmania argument.  But more bland.  It’s a run game and D carrying the QB…..and wanting to over credit the QB
    • Whew, it won't compete against the Pop Tart Bowl (#12 BYU Cougars vs the #22 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets - Saturday, December 27, 2025, at 3:30 PM ET) And yes, the Pop Tart Bowl DOES have the best marketing plan of all the bowls
